Now, 2 years ago, I invited Willie to ride with me on Air Force One on the way to the All-Star Game in St. Louis. It was an extraordinary trip. Very rarely when I'm on Air Force One am I the second most important guy on there. [Laughter] Everybody was just passing me by—"Can I get you something, Mr. Mays?" [Laughter] What's going on? Willie was also a 23-year-old outfielder the last time the Giants won the World Series, back when the team was in New York.

Football fields and basketball courts are always the same length, but no two outfields are created equal. As Jay Jaffe explains via a look at Barry Bonds and the all-time home run leaderboard, a player’s home park can have a significant effect on how often he goes yard. It's been a couple of weeks since the 30th anniversary of Hank Aaron's historic 715th home run and the accompanying tributes, but Barry Bonds' exploits tend to keep the top of the all-time chart in the news. With homers in seven straight games and counting at this writing, Bonds has blown past Willie Mays at number three like the Say Hey Kid was standing still, which— congratulatory road trip aside—he has been, come to think of it. Baseball Prospectus' Dayn Perry penned an affectionate tribute to Aaron last week. In reviewing Hammerin' Hank's history, he notes that Aaron's superficially declining stats in 1968 (the Year of the Pitcher, not coincidentally) led him to consider retirement, but that historian Lee Allen reminded him of the milestones which lay ahead. Two years later, Aaron became the first black player to cross the 3,000 hit threshold, two months ahead of Mays. By then he was chasing 600 homers and climbing into some rarefied air among the top power hitters of all time.

The video will mark the first time all of the living U.S. Presidents will participate in a ceremony at a sporting event. Great pitchers such as Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry made their mark, Marichal with one of the most unusual pitching motions in baseball history and Gaylord Perry with his infamous spitball.Yet, "City 'Scapes" isn't your usual baseball book, filled with wooden facts and relying on the oft-times predjudiced and spin-oriented pronouncements of former major league players and executives.     Bruce and Jamye Sutter Contributors Bruce Sutter, recently inducted into Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame as a relief pitcher and his wife, Jamye, are Harrison High School Hall of Fame Parents for all they did to tirelessly “pitch” Harrison High School to this community and to set high standards for volunteerism for both the athletic and academic programs. When Harrison High School opened in 1991, the baseball field was literally an unevenly graded field with a fence around it - that was all the Cobb County School District did at the time for the sport. If you wanted better, your community had to do it themselves. While Mr. and Mrs. Sutter had the means to personally fund the improvement efforts, and over the years made substantial monetary donations to the baseball program, it is what they did as parents that stands as the most significant long-term contribution. The Sutter’s demonstrated to this community that working for the things you believe in is important. They volunteered countless hours for the betterment of Harrison High School. No job was beneath them. They epitomized service- leadership to their children and every parent in the community. They were proud parents and wanted to help as many kids as they could. Their efforts did just that. They organized parent/player work days at the baseball field, planned and worked in the annual fund-raiser golf tournaments, and often were seen at the baseball field doing different jobs to make the facility better for our youth. To quote Bruce and Jamye, “It’s for the boys.” Over-and-over they demonstrated their love and commitment as parents to the baseball program, the players and their parents.

It is my honor to serve as Chairman of this organization and to see 2016 Graduate of the Year 6-7 firsthand how the efforts of the Board have made this event stronger than ever. As a private, non-profit organization, we are dedicated to carry-on Hap Dumont’s original vision; one that provides quality baseball Former Graduates of the Year 8-9 in a family setting. The National Baseball Congress State Tournament was started in 1931 by Hap Dumont. It was originally 2016 League Affiliates 10 played on Island Park in the middle of the Arkansas River. In 1935, Hap added what has become our treasured annual event, the NBC World Series. Since then, the World Series has seen a few changes. The bats were wood, then switched to aluminum, then back to wood. The ownership of the tournament has 2016 NBC Award Sponsors 11 changed from private to public and now private. The boxcars outside the right field fence where kids used to watch the games are gone and the concourse was added.

Game 2 had the same result, as New York's southpaw Tommy Byrne held Brooklyn to five hits in a 4-2 victory. With the Series heading back to Brooklyn, Johnny Podres was given the start for Game 3. The Dodger lefty stymied the Yankees' offense over the first seven innings by allowing one run on four hits en route to an 8-3 victory. Podres gave the Dodger faithful a hint as to what lay ahead in the series with his complete-game, six-strikeout performance. Game 4 at Ebbets Field turned out to be an all-out slugfest. After falling behind early, 3-1, the Dodgers used the long ball to knot up the series. Future Hall of Famers Roy Campanella and Duke Snider each homered and Gil Hodges collected three of the club’s 14 hits, including a home run in the 8-5 triumph. Snider's third and fourth home runs of the Series provided the support needed for rookie Roger Craig and the Dodgers took Game 5 by a score of 5-3.
