8 ‘Only behave as citizens worthy of the Why vote? gospel of Christ …’ —Philippians 1:27 This verse is more commonly translated “Only let your manner of life be worthy …” and so we often miss the depths of what Paul means. Roman citizenship was a treasured and foundational part of one’s “manner of life” in Philippi. Earthly citizenship for the believer, however, is transformed by the gospel so that we also see “our citizenship is in heaven” (Philippians 3:20). In other words, we are to become so heavenly minded by the gospel that we are of tremendous earthly good, especially with our earthly citizenship! While we’re not asking you to do all that Paul did with his Roman citizenship in Philippi (see Acts 16:11–40), we ask you to consider what God might do if we were willing to be like Paul or the Philippians—not only on election day but all year long, from rural Minnesota all the way to St. Paul.
