Vance Joseph to Return As Broncos' Head Coach in 2018

Vance Joseph to return as Broncos’ head coach in 2018 By Nicki Jhabvala Denver Post January 2, 2018 Despite a 5-11 season, eight defeats by double digits and a playoffless finish, the Broncos will retain coach Vance Joseph for next season, giving him a chance “to fix it,” just as he had hoped. Joseph met with John Elway early Monday to learn of the general manager’s decision and to mull changes to the coaching staff, which included the departure of six assistants. “Vance and I had a great talk this morning about our plan to attack this offseason and get better as a team,” Elway tweeted Monday morning. “We believe in Vance as our head coach. Together, we’ll put in the work to improve in all areas and win in 2018. “To all our fans: THANK YOU for your tremendous support and sticking with us through a tough year. This wasn’t the season anyone expected, but we’ll learn from it and be better because of it. Our 2018 season starts today.” In keeping Joseph for 2018, Elway spared the Broncos of a fourth head coaching change in five years and provided a significant cost savings. Had Joseph left, the Broncos could have had to pay the remaining salaries of most of two coaching staffs. Joseph was hired last January after the resignation of Gary Kubiak and was immediately labeled “a leader of men” because of his ability to relate to players on both sides of the ball, and to work well with fellow coaches. The Broncos had tried to bring in Joseph as defensive coordinator in 2015, but the Cincinnati Bengals refused to release him from his contract.

2018 Nfl Season Begins on Kickoff Weekend

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 9/4/18 http://twitter.com/nfl345 2018 NFL SEASON BEGINS ON KICKOFF WEEKEND The NFL returns this week and it’s time to get back to football. Kickoff Weekend signals the start of a 256-game journey, one that promises hope for each of the league’s 32 teams as they set their eyes on Super Bowl LIII, which will be played on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA. One thing is certain: the 2018 season will be filled with memorable moments, as young players emerge onto the scene, familiar faces continue their climb up the record books and teams vie to make their mark in the postseason. The 99th season of NFL play kicks off on Thursday night (NBC, 8:20 PM ET) as the Super Bowl champion PHILADELPHIA EAGLES host the ATLANTA FALCONS at Lincoln Financial Field in a battle of the NFC’s past two Super Bowl representatives. The Eagles, who finished last in the NFC East with a 7-9 record in 2016, became the second team since 2003 to go from “worst- to-first” en route to a Super Bowl victory, joining the 2009 New Orleans Saints. Every team enters the 2018 season with hope and a trip to Atlanta for Super Bowl LIII in mind. Below are a few reasons why. THE FIELD IS OPEN: Five of the eight divisions in 2017 were won by a team that finished in third or fourth place in the division the previous season – Jacksonville (AFC South), the Los Angeles Rams (NFC West), Minnesota (NFC North), New Orleans (NFC South) and Philadelphia (NFC East).

30 DECEMBER 2019 Field Studies: a 10-Year Snapshot of NFL Coaching

30 DECEMBER 2019 Field Studies: A 10-Year Snapshot of NFL Coaching Hires Volume 1 Issue 1 Preferred Citation: Brooks, S.N., Harrison, C.K., Gallagher, K.L., Bukstein, S., Brenneman, L., Lofton, R. (2019). Field Studies: A 10-Year Snapshot of NFL Coaching Hires. Retrieved from Global Sport Institute at Arizona State University (GSI Working Paper Series Volume 1 Issue 1): https://globalsport.asu.edu/resources/field-studies-10-season-snapshot-nfl- coaching-hires. The Global Sport Institute would like to give special thanks to Kenneth L. Shropshire, Barry Bozeman, and N. Jeremi Duru for reviewing and giving feedback on early drafts of the report. Abstract At the end of the 2018-19 NFL season, five of the eight head coaches fired were African American, and only one vacancy was filled by a coach of color. This inequity raised the question: is the Rooney Rule, the NFL’s diversity hiring plan, working? The Global Sport Education and Research Lab (GSERL), with the Paul Robeson Center for Innovative Academic and Athletic Prowess (PRRC), sought to answer one question: What can we say about the NFL’s hiring of coaches of color? The purpose of this work is to explore and report on coach hiring and firing trends, not to extrapolate how or why these patterns occur. While other research has considered changes on a year to year basis, we looked at changes from the 2009-10 NFL season through the 2018-19 season. All the data presented have been gathered from publicly accessible sources. We conducted two phases of data collection and analysis.

New Broncos Coach Vic Fangio Is Old-School Tough. but Is He Tough Enough to Take No Guff from John Elway? by Mark Kiszla the Denver Post January 10, 2019

New Broncos coach Vic Fangio is old-school tough. But is he tough enough to take no guff from John Elway? By Mark Kiszla The Denver Post January 10, 2019 Vic Fangio knows rock-solid defense. No doubt. But does Fangio know what he’s getting into as the next coach of the Broncos? At age 60, Fangio has not only been around the NFL block, but gotten dirty in the trenches. During his 32 years of coaching in the league, he has undoubtedly worked for good bosses and bosses from the wrong side of the River Styx. The naïve don’t survive in this tough business. But has Fangio ever had a boss like John Elway? Fangio knows how to get the best out of superstar linebacker Von Miller, if how Khalil Mack wreaked havoc for the top-ranked Chicago Bears defense in 2018 is any indication. The Broncos wouldn’t dare hire Fangio, who toiled 19 seasons as a defensive coordinator before finally getting his first chance to run his own NFL shop, only to trade the Vonster. Would they? Fangio is old-school tough. But is he tough enough to take no guff from Elway? Fangio is a man of few words. But he knows the secrets of winning. When Fangio did wonders for the San Francisco defense from 2011-14, then 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh proclaimed: “I think he’s one of the all- time best defensive coordinators in the history of the league. I think that’s who he is. I think that’s what his legacy will be someday.” So if what Fangio brings to Denver is Wade Phillips without the corn pone jokes, that wouldn’t be a bad deal, would it? (We won’t mention Phillips went 16-16 and was fired after two years as Denver’s head coach back in the 1990s, when being a .500 football team looked a whole lot worse than it would now to Broncos Country.) Men of a certain age, especially ones obsessed with winning, are in a hurry, because they hear the clock ticking.
