Pastor Stephen, an incredible talent with a Grand Circuit pedigree, comes to Indiana for the 2021 breeding season. The son of Cantab Hall won 10 of 22 lifetime starts, missing the board only four times in two seasons while earning over $1 million on the track. As a freshman, Pastor Stephen captured a Peter Haughton Memorial elimination, $98,489 Champlain division and the $500,000 William Wellwood Memorial on his way to being named the Dan Patch Award winner as the nation’s top two-year-old trotter. He also raced second in the $600,000 Breeders Crown final and $539,000 Valley Victory final to earn over $650,000 in his freshman campaign. As a sophomore, Pastor Stephen added a victory in a $126,117 Simcoe division and trotted second in the $500,000 Earl Beal final and third in the $500,000 Colonial Trot. The trotter finished fifth in the $1.5 million Hambletonian final.

“He was a really good-gaited colt. An easy horse to be around and to race. He was top three of his class as a three-year-old. Unfortunately, he got injured in a transport incident before the Hambletonian where he finished third in his elimination and fifth in the final from Post 10. After that, a coffin bone injury put an end to his career in the USA and was sold to Europe. I am glad he is back in the USA. He will be a big asset to the Indiana breeding industry, as he is the full brother to Father Patrick, as a matter of fact I reserved two breeding rights to Pastor Stephen myself.” -Trainer Jimmy Takter

Pastor Stephen’s European progeny quickly made an impact overseas, with just over 76 percent of his 321 foals making it to the races. Last season the success of his progeny ranked him fourth among all trotters in Europe with 28 stakes winners to his credit. The sire of eight millionaires thus far, Pastor Stephen is also represented by Avalon Mists, 2018 Germany Filly Derby winner, as well as Officer Stephen and Inspector Bros, winner and third-place finisher in the 2020 European Breeders Crown for colts and geldings. Don’t miss the opportunity to breed to this great looking millionaire son of the sire of sires! A limited number of lifetime breeding shares are available.

26 Indiana Standardbred Magazine December 2020 Quevedo pursuing passion of Standardbred racing By Simon LeFranc

“The only thing I can tell you is that I love my job.”

How many of us would love to say those words?

Luis “Tony” Quevedo, who is in his second and most successful season as a trainer, voiced those very words recently.

The 41-year-old native of Guatemala conditions a stable of 20 horses at Harrah’s Hoosier Park during the racing season and houses his charges at the Indiana State Fair- grounds during the off season. Though his proper name is Luis, most in the Midwest harness racing industry know him as “Tony.”

“I came to the United States in 1999,” Tony offered. “I came by myself, doing what a lot of people do, looking for a better life. I went to California first where I have family and then later moved to Chicago. One of my cousins worked for (trainer) Jim Music and he was the first guy I worked for.

“I learned all of the basics from the ground up from Jim,” Tony continued. “I started by cleaning stalls and grooming horses, and my first thoughts were, ‘what a great job.’ I just fell in love with the horses and every as- pect of the job and in two months, Jim let me jog horses. A few months later I started helping him train.”

Tony received his trainer’s license in 2019 and from 20 starts last season he had one winner and one third-place finisher for $13,620.

“The connection to the animals when you start working with them is what I enjoy the most,” he related. “Taking them to the races and seeing them perform is every-

34 Indiana Standardbred Magazine December 2020 To say Kenneth Shields is a multi-tasker would be an understatement. This past summer, Shields worked for trainer-driver Jay Cross, got his provisional driver’s license, and competed on the Indiana Sired Fair Circuit (ISFC). But his ultimate goal is a master’s degree from Ball State University, which was also on his agenda this summer.

Shields was exposed to horse racing at an early age while growing up in Goshen, Ind. His parents had horses and his sister, Kristyn, is married to Indiana horseman Alex Udell, so he has been around the sport most of his life. Working as a groom turned into a nice summer job for him while attending University of Southern Indiana in Evansville on the opposite end of the state.

Shields got his degree in Biology with aspirations of working in the medical field as a physician’s assistant and was immediately scooped up for a job. He worked in the emergency room for two years utilizing his degree and also realizing a career change was in his future.

“During those two years working in the ER, I realized where my interests were,” said Shields. “So, I enrolled at Ball State to get my master’s degree with a concentra- tion in finance. I enjoy working with the horses and it’s fun, but long term, I want to go into the medical/phar- maceutical sales field. But I will always stay connected to racing in some way.”

Shields put his time to good use while remaining in Florida, getting 11 matinee drives in for Cross and trainers James and Verlin Yoder along with Valerie Grondin.

Shields was able to get his first qualifying drive in at Harrah’s Hoosier Park in early June and then was ready for the ISFC when it began in early July. He accompanied Cross to nearly every stop on the ISFC and helped with the conditioning of standout two-year-old pacer Big Gulp, who went undefeated in 10 starts in 2020 for Cross, including a win at Harrah’s Hoosier Kenneth Shields guides Candy It Is to victory at the Converse Fairgrounds in late Park in 1:52.1.
