Paving your own career path and making a name for yourself is never an easy task. One would think it would be particularly challenging when you’re the younger sister of Aussie international pop star, Cody Simpson. But don’t tell that to 16-year-old Alli Simpson who is a rising star in her own right and is doing things on her own terms. with her brother’s guidance and support, Simpson inspires a growing group of fans around the world to embrace their individual beauty with her YouTube channel and overall sunny outlook on life. With over 370,000 YouTube subscriptions and nearly 1.5 million followers on both Twitter and Instagram, the well-spoken and mature Simpson bombshell has already secured herself as a teen celebrity and is eager to continue spreading her positive attitude.

16 ragged // raggedmag.com How has Cody influenced you with your endeavors? Having Cody obviously helped me get started with my career in the first place. Without him starting his own career, I wouldn’t have moved to the States and I wouldn’t have had these same opportunities. I would never have thought about it. When we moved over here for him, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. once I started seeing what he does, I realized it might be a chance for me to kind of get into it as well. I’ve really found my own passion through it all. Cody inspires me every day to go out and try new things. It’s been great to have that support in such a big industry. How did you get started with your YouTube channel? My friends and I would make videos back [in Australia]. We’d do skits just for fun and then we realized that people were starting to post on YouTube. We thought “Oh! YouTube! We can put our videos online and everybody can watch them!” So we started doing that, making really stupid videos, just my friends and I. But people started watching them and then we started making more. It kind of built from that. [In the U.S.] making YouTube videos is such a big business, so moving over here brought it to another level. Your channel covers so many different topics which teens like yourself are interested in. Why do you think it’s important to inspire your peers? It’s important to show them to be themselves. I think it’s really important that girls know they can stick with what they love and not follow trends. Just to be yourself and respect yourself is really what I want to share. When did you decide to start recording and singing songs on your channel? That was influenced by Cody. I’ve always been really, really nervous when it comes to singing. I’ve never sung in front of anyone because I’ve been too shy. it was about a year ago when Cody heard me singing around the house and he was like “Why don’t you get into the studio and record a song?” I was so against it since it makes me so nervous, but he said, “If you don’t like the song, then you don’t have to release it. Just do it for fun.” So I went in and started messing around and then realized how much I liked it and it’s become a new love of mine. i’m still warming up to it, obviously, with building my confidence and stuff, but it’s really great to try new things because you never know what you’re going to love.

Just to be yourself and respect yourself is really what I want to share. What’s your favorite thing about singing? around and do nothing. I’ve kind of learned that from Cody. If I have a day off, I don’t want it to be a “day off.” I always want to keep working hard I think the whole creative side is awesome. When I release a song that and feel like I’m moving forward in my career. I like to keep doing stuff, girls can really relate to, it’s cool to have that connection. I mean, I whether it’s going for a run or vocal training, even just little things. I’ve been listening to my performance, because I want my first one to be great. So I’m trying to brother’s new music, too. He always sends me his rough drafts and I work hard to make sure that that performance is good. actually really, really like them. You have a few singles out now. Do you have an album in What can your fans look forward to? the works? Some new music. I’ve been working on some surprise stuff with Cody in I don’t. Right now, I’m recording singles and releasing them for fun. I the studio and he’s been writing stuff for me, so with music, there’s a lot have been meeting with record labels, so it’s something I’m definitely to more come. I’m also starting a radio show with RadioDisney, which is taking more seriously, but for right now it’s just fun doing a single every kind of a big thing for me at the moment so I’m working pretty hard on now and then, and then making a video. that. Ryan Beatty has many nicknames. YouTube sensation, teen pop star, the next Justin Beiber. But he refers to himself as something else: the underdog. A mentality he gloriously explores in the aptly titled “Underdog” track on his latest EP. “This is my way of saying I don’t care what you have to say; I’m going for it.”

26 ragged // raggedmag.com The 17-year-old singer has had his share of naysayers. Many of them fellow high schoolers. The launch of his musical career coincided with geometry and tardy bells after all. But don’t feel too sorry for the guy, he likes being the underdog. “I always have something to work toward.” his perseverance began back in 2009. Once he realized his talent was more than just singing in the shower, he decided to share his gift with the world. “I’d always wanted to do music as a career, but it wasn’t until then that I had that faith in myself.” So he did what any budding modern artist would do. He perfected the art of self-promotion and began posting videos of himself covering today’s all-star songbirds on YouTube. And the rest is 30-million-viewers history. fans have fallen for Beatty’s intoxicating covers of Bruno Mars, , Lorde, and . But even though he sounds like he could sing the phonebook, there’s one particular anomaly he won’t touch. “I tried to cover ’s ‘Bennie and the Jets,’ and it was good, but I couldn’t post it; it’s a really hard song to pull off, and I just didn’t feel worthy.” On the flip side, there’s one he loves to cover and—fingers crossed—hopes to one day collaborate with: . 30 ragged // raggedmag.com raggedmag.com // ragged 31 “IT’S NOT THAT I’M TRYING TO BE DIFFERENT; ITS JUST THAT I’M FINALLY GETTING THE CHANCE TO DO WHAT I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO.”

Singer/songwriter Mayer is one of Beatty’s biggest inspirations. So it’s no wonder the two share an outlook on lyrical life. Mayer’s been quoted saying forget the backup plan, while Beatty says, “If you’re going to go for it, really go for it.” Furthermore, “make the music you want to make. Don’t let anyone sway you into making music that’s popular.” in fact, Beatty’s debut album was a little more pop than he preferred. But now he’s taking his own advice and working toward becoming the artist he’s always wanted to be, which is a bit more indie and a lot more creative. “It’s not that I’m trying to be different; it’s just that I’m finally getting the chance to do what I’ve always wanted to do.” another thing he’s always wanted to do is write. Which he’s doing now more than ever, now that he’s able to get to that place. “I’ve gotten good at finding ways to tap into my emotions.” After co-writing his latest EP, paying particular attention to “Chameleon,” which he calls out as his fave, he’s on to writing album No. 3. But all work and no play makes Beatty a dull boy. So when he’s not singing or writing or playing guitar, the Cali native’s skateboarding, beaching, and road tripping. One of his favorite pastimes, road trips help get his creative juices flowing. It’s on the open road where he comes up with some of his best ideas and lyrics. Hey, it worked for Jack Kerouac. leave it to the freeway to spawn creativity; leave it the social networks to give birth to a career. Following in the footsteps of insta-stars including , Psy, and Maru, Beatty owes his success to YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and the like. Without them, he wouldn’t have performed at last month’s Lollapalooza where one of his favorite artists, Dev Hynes of Blood Orange, took the stage. He wouldn’t have toured last year with buddy Cody Simpson. Or landed opposite a blonde hottie in a music video for “Every Little Thing,” his digital single that prompted a cover by the Biebs. “The weirdest thing about music videos is that you meet the quote love interest the day of the shoot, and you’re supposed to have all this chemistry.” Awk-ward. as helpful as posts and tweets and vines are, they can be just as taxing. “I’m super grateful to have those tools and never want to leave my supporters in the dark, but there are times I just don’t want to think about that stuff. I just want to chill out.” and by chill out, he means heat things up. Beatty loves to cook. Should music fail to pan out, Beatty wants to rock out culinary style. Dreams of becoming a chef come thanks to a childhood spent fancying Top Chef, Italian food, and experimenting in the kitchen. But with such a huge smorgasbord of opportunity ahead of him and foodie creations which, according to Beatty, have a 50/50 success rate, he says he’ll stick to music. For now. R

But actually, there’s another so-fresh-and-crispy Born Robert Zimmerman, Bob Dylan spent his formative spot he has his heart set on. “I’d love to do a show in Hawaii. That’d years starting up bands and rocking out to Little Richard be my fave.” and . Getting started early is a must if one wants to achieve greatness. And that’s a tune Simpson Once the tour was all sung and done, the entire experience stuck knows all too well. The guy began casually writing music out as one of the best moments of his life. “It literally grew me up and playing guitar at age 6 and performed for an audience so much as a person but also as a musician.” Until things went sour for the first time at age 10. “At first, I was so shy in front and he was stuck at an airport in Portugal for days. Lucky for him, of a crowd, playing guitar, not knowing what I was doing he had his friend/manager and main squeeze to keep him company. — just hoping I sounded good enough to make people “By the third day, we ended up finding a cool beach and chilling. So want to clap at the end,” Simpson says. it wasn’t too bad.”

I want my next solo album to be perfect and to really kick off the next phase of my career. Ever since ‘Surfboard,’ I feel like I’ve grown up a bunch as a musician, and I realize now that I don’t want to make any music that I don’t want to sing twenty years from now.

It wasn’t until a few years later that things got more serious — and technical. Remember that social- networking giant that boomed about a decade ago? Yep, MySpace. That’s where it all began. “Back when MySpace was cool, I posted my songs on there. I was pretty young and inexperienced, but I had a lot of passion. Then people started noticing, and the next thing you know, I got a message from a producer, who said I have a lot of potential to be really great when I grow up.” Not that 17 is all grown up, but the singer/ songwriter does have a few notches in his belt to be proud of. Namely, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and Escape from Planet Earth. In the past, getting one’s song into a film or featuring it on a commercial could be considered “selling out.” Not anymore. With huge outlets, especially radio stations, going under every day, iTunes, movies, commercials, and YouTube are more important than ever in getting music to the masses. Another thing that’s important: self-confidence. But even the most confident superstar can get a fit of nerves before a performance. J.Lo calms down with a prayer, Beyoncé quiets things with a massage chair and some stretches, but Simpson’s preshow ritual takes the cake. “I like to be alone in the dark — usually with candles. Sounds weird. But I play the guitar, and just warm up my voice, and drink tea,” Simpson confesses. Finally, the secret to success: Earl Grey and mood lighting. Whatever works, man. R

These are the top six jams he has on heavy rotation — a mix of pop, acoustics, and rap, this lively set makes for the perfect driving soundtrack.

Pharrell Williams 1 “Angel” This has a ton of funky falsetto and infectious percussion.

Ed Sheeran 2 “You Need Me” I love the mix of singing and rapping. And the guitar grooves are great, too.

John Mayer 3 “Crossroads” This is a perfect take on the original blues tune by Robert Johnson. His harmonic arrangements are noteworthy.

Jack Johnson 4 “Staple It Together” Jack’s vibe will always be my favorite. I’ve been playing this song for most of my life.

Bruno Mars 5 “Moonshine” This song is an interesting change of style from the rest of the songs on the album [Unorthodox Jukebox]. It has a great ‘80s throwback sound. a nzon

THE PERFECT DAY I like to spend time with family and friends. I’m always so busy in LA that I rarely have time to just relax and catch up with the people who mean the most. I’m going from meeting to meeting, to press, to the studio and every spare minute between I’m stuck in traffic!
