Sewanee Purple,1986
Volume 162, Issue 4 Second Class Postage Paid U.S.P.S. 491-440 Mann 11,1986 Purple-w^The Sewanee -^ University of the South Sewanee, Tennessee SPRING BREAK: at last!!! The Sewanee Purple March 1 1. 1986 Sewanee Breaks Another Record BY RUSSELL PENFIELD in full swing again rd year. As of Febru- ary 28, the Admissions Office had received 1 167 appli- cations. This tops last year's record by 109, and late ap- lications are still trickling in. Applications to the college have increased 41% since 1983. Considering this year's large freshman class of 340, it is understandable that many people are wondering exactly how many will be admitted next year, a particularly difficult question given the fact i sions is really a game. This year, the Admissions Com- mittee hoped to get 295 students. To get that number, 41% of those accepted would Rave chosen Sewanee. However, 45% of those accepted decided to take Sewa- nee up on its offer. As students, faculty, and administrations officials are aware, the University had a little trouble coping with this number of students (with cro r. tories and the like). To avoid a similar I with the incoming freshman class, the Admissior The Second City perfoming the "Switch Improvision" at Guerry Auditorium, March 6. will probably admit fewer students and count on a proximately 44% of those accepted choosing Sewanee. ONE OF THE OBVIOUS effects of this increasingl Regents Visit Campus selective process is that the credentials of the incoming Sewanee students will average a little higher. This, ho is not really unique when one considers that in the last two freshman classes, the average SAT score has BY ALISON RIOPEL review the food Duke, gone up 42 points. -

Protest and Survive: a Brief History and Analysis of the Politics of Punk
PROTEST AND SURVIVE: A BRIEF HISTORY AND ANALYSIS OF THE POLITICS OF PUNK A THESIS IN Musicology Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF MUSIC by DILLON PATRICK HENRY B.F.A., Carnegie Mellon University, 2010 M.M., University of Michigan, 2014 Kansas City, Missouri 2018 © 2018 DILLON PATRICK HENRY ALL RIGHTS RESERVED PROTEST AND SURVIVE: A BRIEF HISTORY AND ANALYSIS OF THE POLITICS OF PUNK Dillon Patrick Henry, Candidate for the Master of Music Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2018 ABSTRACT Politics are an important aspect of most punk music, and many authors, avoiding concrete description, paint the genre with a nebulous left-ish brush. This, however, is insufficient at explaining how and why the genre has adapted to (as well as helped shape) geographically and culturally disparate communities across the globe over the last half- century. Moreover, most academic treatment of punk rock comes from a cultural and sociological perspective, lacking a theoretical and analytical discussion of the music itself. This document will synthesize the evolving genre’s musical and cultural entanglements with politics. To this end, the document will focus on landmark bands, albums, and locations around the world in a mostly chronological order with occasional overlap, documenting cultural development of the genre with supplemental musical analysis. With rigorous primary-source analysis of punk rock zines, this document will also recognize punk rock communities and transmission of ideas outside of the bands themselves. The elusive intertwining and occasionally paradoxical stances of the punk subculture are precisely why creating a single definition of punk rock is a difficult endeavor. -

The authors examine twenty-one of what they believe are the best and most influential bands of the period and provide an annotated list of representative recordings. These artists provide the inspiration and sonic blueprint for much of today’s cutting edge music. Even so, their recordings are often absent from library collections and many librarians and patrons are unfamiliar with them. The groups discussed are Bad Brains, Beat Happening, Big Black, Bikini Kill, Black Flag, Camper Van Beethoven, Dead Kennedys, Fugazi, Galaxie 500, Hüsker Dü, Melvins, Minor Threat, Minutemen, Mission Of Burma, Pixies, R.E.M., the Replacements, Sleater-Kinney, Sonic Youth, Throwing Muses, and Uncle Tupelo.
