Figures and/or pictures may be missing from this format of the document. *** Abstract: Shortly after he won three gold medals and one silver medal in distance running events at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, Finland's Hannes Kolehmainen immigrated to the United States. He spent nearly a decade living in Brooklyn, plying his trade as a mason and dominating the amateur endurance running circuit in his adopted homeland. He became a naturalised US citizen in 1921 but returned to Finland shortly thereafter. During his American sojourn, the US press depicted him simultaneously as an exotic foreign athlete and as an immigrant shaped by his new environment into a symbol of successful assimilation. Kolehmainen's career raised questions about sport and national identity – both Finnish and American – about the complexities of immigration during the floodtide of European migration to the US, and about native and adopted cultures in shaping the habits of success.

As the oldest annually contested marathon in the world, the Boston Marathon represents more than a 26.2-mile footrace. The roads from Hopkinton to Boston have served as a beacon for well over a century, bringing those from all backgrounds together to celebrate the pursuit of athletic excellence. From our early beginnings in 1897 through this year’s 123rd running, the Boston Marathon has been an annual tradition that is on full display every April near and far. We hope that all will be able to savor the spirit of the Boston Marathon, regardless whether you are an athlete or volunteer, spectator or member of the media. Race week will surely not disappoint. The race towards Boylston Street will continue to showcase some of the world’s best athletes. Fronting the charge on Marathon Monday will be a quartet of defending champions who persevered through some of the harshest weather conditions in race history twelve months ago. Desiree Linden, the determined and resilient American who snapped a 33-year USA winless streak in the women’s open division, returns with hopes of keeping her crown. Linden has said that last year’s race was the culmination of more than a decade of trying to tame the beast of Boston – a race course that rewards those who are both patient and daring.

    Stumble inland is a small country of around 5 ½ million people, about the population of the state of Minnesota. The country has pro- duced one notable musician, Jean Sibelius,1 and one global F 2 th company in Nokia. But in the first half of the 20 century, Finland was best known for producing world-class distance runners. Be- tween 1912 and 1940, five Finns held world records and won multiple Olympic gold medals. Hannes Kolehmainen took three gold medals at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Ville Ritola won four gold medals in the 1924 Games in Paris, Volmari Iso-Hollo won gold medals in both the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics and the 1936 Berlin Games, Taisto Mäki held two world records when the 1940 Olympics in Helsinski were canceled due to war. Most famous of all was Paavo Nurmi, winner of three gold medals at the 1920 Olympics in Belgium and another five gold medals at the 1924 Paris Olympiad. The “Flying Finns” dominated the running world between the wars. Myrskylä is a rural village about 50 miles north of Helsinki. Finland’s top runner in the 1950s, Rolf Haikkola, was from that village, and after retiring from world-class racing, he coached the children in his hometown. One boy, in particular, showed promise, setting national records for under-18 in 3,000- and 5,000-meters.     Summary THE PATRIOTIC MAN WITH A SPORTS RELIGION Lauri Pihkala, the Champion of Modern Sports Ideology The purpose of this work was to study the life of Honorary Professor (1948) Lauri Tahko Pihkala (18881981) as well as the roots, foundations and principles of his sport and physical exercise philosophy. Another objective was to examine Pihkalas role and significance in the formation and development of the Finnish sport and physical exercise culture from the early 20th century until the 1970s. Tahko Pihkala became the grand old man of Finnish sport. Probably all of his contemporary countrymen learned to know him as the peoples Tahko who tirelessly sermonised about the virtue and bliss of sport and physical exercise, both through his own practical sporting activities and through his innumerable books, articles, interviews and lectures. In order to understand the life and sports philosophy of Pihkala and the overall Finnish physical exercise culture, it is vital to recognise three central historical events, or rather phenomena, which had an impact not only on the formation of the Finnish national identity, but also, and especially, on the development of Pihkalas own ideals and philosophy of life and the world. The first phenomenon was the upsurge of hatred felt in the early years of the 20th century against the Russianisation policy of the Russian despots. Indeed, the limitation of Finnish national rights and freedoms led to open hostility and the assassination of the Russian governor-general Nikolai Bobrikov in 1904. The repression policy did not fit within the concept of justice held by the majority of the Finns, Tahko Pihkala included.
