IV Forest fragmentation is caused by the clearing of patches of indigenous vegetation for agriculture, urban development, and other human land uses. Such action results in patches of remnant natural vegetation being surrounded by altered vegetation. I investigate the effects of forest fragmentation and matrix type on avian diversity and assemblage structure in forest patches ofthe historically fragmented Karkloof / Balgowan forest range, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This study compares the bird assemblage diversity and composition of indigenous forest patches surrounded by commercial forestry (Gilboa complex) with that surrounded by natural grassland matrix (Balgowan complex). Insularisation of Afromontane Mistbelt forest in KwaZulu-Natal has led to loss of species where forest fragments support fewer bird species than comparably sized patches of mainland forest. Small fragments within natural grassland have fewer bird species per unit area than larger fragments. Forest patch area-dependent density compensation is evident and bird assemblages appear saturated. Bird assemblages are characterised by a non-random species distribution pattern where area-dependent processes are dominant, and the loss of species from fragments follows a deterministic sequence. In forests in the plantation-dominated matrix no island-effect is detectable and it appears that forest patches are converging on the same bird species richness, regardless of forest size. No density compensation is evident and bird assemblages are not saturated. The sequence of species loss from forest patches is not as predictable, where a random yet prominent colonisation process exists. As commercial plantations provide suitable habitat cover for movement of forest birds, colonisation of both distant and small indigenous forest patches has been possible, reducing the effects of area-dependent extinction in the forest patches but also resulting in lower species richness in larger patches. Bird species of the Karkloof / Balgowan forest range appear to be fragmentation adapted, and most species are resilient to further landscape change. Certain species are however more prone to local extinction than others. The major predictors of extinction risk are body size, abundance status, and feeding guild. Patch area is the dominant force governing traits in the natural Balgowan complex where larger species with low natural abundance and an insectivorous diet are most prone to local extinction. In the Gilboa complex the nature of the plantation matrix appears to be masking the species natural responses to fragmentation making it difficult to predict which species are most at risk. In order to preserve maximum bird diversity, including high-risk species, the largest intact forest units (::::302ha) must be conserved. Evidently, the nature ofthe matrix affects avifaunal diversity and distribution in forest patches, and plantations have the capacity to significantly alter bird assemblage structure and composition in indigenous forest patches. Forest fragments must be considered as integrated parts of a complex landscape mosaic, and this study emphasises the importance of understanding landscape-scale processes. Knowledge of ecological and life history traits proves valuable for predicting community level response to landscape change. African Wild Dog Trip Report – RBT SA Mega III 2016 2 Tour summary The Rockjumper South Africa Mega tour aims to find as many of the country’s endemic birds and special species as possible over the duration of three and a half weeks, while traversing most of the country’s diverse habitats. We travelled a whopping 6854 kilometres from our starting point in Johannesburg. During our travels we visited seven of South Africa’s nine provinces from Polokwane in Limpopo, Wakkerstroom in Mpumalanga, the dramatic Sani Pass in KwaZulu-Natal, Cape Town in the Western Cape, Port Nolloth in the far reaches of the Northern Cape and finally back to Johannesburg Green Twinspot by Markus Lilje in Gauteng. Although the tour was done at a brisk pace, we were still able to enjoy an excellent and fulfilling time in the areas visited, while covering all the habitats that this incredibly diverse country has to offer. We recorded 470 species of birds on the main tour. Add to this, a remarkable selection of mammal species and reptilian encounters, and it all contributed to this being an excellent tour! Beginning at our comfortable accomodation in Johannesburg, we were thrown into the deep end of introductory birding in South Africa, observing stunning flocks of Red-headed Finch, Southern Red Bishop and Red-billed Quelea, while Speckled Pigeon, Red-eyed, Laughing and Ring-necked Dove fed side by side, allowing us to easily observe their identification pointers.

We cover a huge area of the country, taking us through many different habitats and thus allowing us the opportunity to enjoy large species numbers. This tour follows our tried and tested route through the rugged Western Cape and along the south coast into the Garden Route. From there we move inland to the arid landscapes of the Karoo and Tankwa Karoo before hopping across country via airplane to Johannesburg and exploring the world-famous Kruger National Park. Then back to Johannesburg before winding our way through the mid-altitude grasslands of Wakkerstroom to Zululand, visiting Mkhuze Game Reserve, the St. Lucia estuary, the montane forests of Eshowe and oNgoye and the agricultural lands of Howick and Underberg. A final adventurous ascent takes us into the striking high- altitude vistas of Lesotho before winding our way back down to the tropical Indian Ocean shores of Durban.

As 2015 melts away and 2016 dawns it is with excitement and some trepidation that we welcome the holidays and anticipate what the New Year holds! Most weather models are predicting the continuation of a strong El- Nino episode during the summer season with the expectation for it to start gradually decaying during late autumn and the early winter seasons. Thus the rain that we have recently experienced along the coast and inland towards Hluhluwe- Imfolozi has been most welcome as the continuation of dry conditions towards the mid- and late-summer season is forecast. Let’s all do our bit to conserve water by using it sparingly and installing water collection and recycling systems in our homes and businesses. The Conservancy held its year end function on Friday the 4th December at Twinstreams and it turned out to be a most enjoyable and entertaining evening.     South Africa Mega Birding III 5th to 27th October 2019 (23 days) Trip Report The near-endemic Gorgeous Bushshrike by Daniel Keith Danckwerts Tour leader: Daniel Keith Danckwerts Trip Report – RBT South Africa – Mega Birding III 2019 2 Tour Summary South Africa supports the highest number of endemic species of any African country and is therefore of obvious appeal to birders. This South Africa mega tour covered virtually the entire country in little over a month – amounting to an estimated 10 000km – and targeted every single endemic and near-endemic species! We were successful in finding virtually all of the targets and some of our highlights included a pair of mythical Hottentot Buttonquails, the critically endangered Rudd’s Lark, both Cape, and Drakensburg Rockjumpers, Orange-breasted Sunbird, Pink-throated Twinspot, Southern Tchagra, the scarce Knysna Woodpecker, both Northern and Southern Black Korhaans, and Bush Blackcap. We additionally enjoyed better-than-ever sightings of the tricky Barratt’s Warbler, aptly named Gorgeous Bushshrike, Crested Guineafowl, and Eastern Nicator to just name a few. Any trip to South Africa would be incomplete without mammals and our tally of 60 species included such difficult animals as the Aardvark, Aardwolf, Southern African Hedgehog, Bat-eared Fox, Smith’s Red Rock Hare and both Sable and Roan Antelopes. This really was a trip like no other! ____________________________________________________________________________________ Tour in Detail Our first full day of the tour began with a short walk through the gardens of our quaint guesthouse in Johannesburg. Here we enjoyed sightings of the delightful Red-headed Finch, small numbers of Southern Red Bishops including several males that were busy moulting into their summer breeding plumage, the near-endemic Karoo Thrush, Cape White-eye, Grey-headed Gull, Hadada Ibis, Southern Masked Weaver, Speckled Mousebird, African Palm Swift and the Laughing, Ring-necked and Red-eyed Doves.

A long-term business approach has also been introduced that ensures that the protected area’s management objectives are operationalised and reflected through an Annual Plan of Operation. A Financial Plan will, at the same time, actively pursue additional and improved funding and income towards the achievement of the protected area’s objectives.

All photos were taken on this tour The Fynbos endemic Orange-breasted Sunbird feeding on a Protea flower This tour gave clients a wonderful introduction to the birds, mammals and landscapes of this beautiful and varied country. The effects of a nationwide, prolonged drought were particularly evident in Kruger and Mkuze where bird numbers were down considerably. Ironically, our birding was rained out at other sites, meaning that we lost some birding time. Despite these setbacks, we still did well for birds and even had a few surprises, including the rare Mangrove Kingfisher at Umlalazi and Southern Pied Babbler north of Pretoria. We did particularly well on mammals and saw 58 species, including Cheetah, African Wildcat and Cape Porcupine.
