  • The 42Nd Queen Elizabeth Ii Cup (G1)
FROM: Masahiro Usuda General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: November 12, 2017 SUBJECT: RESULT OF THE 42ND QUEEN ELIZABETH II CUP (G1) The Queen Elizabeth II Cup was established in 1976 to facilitate friendly relations between Japan and England, in commemoration of Her Excellency’s visit to Japan in 1975. The race initially started as a 2,400-meter race and the last leg of the “Triple Crown for three-year-old fillies”, but became a 2,200-meter race for fillies and mares of three-year-old and up from 1996. Tigertail (FR, by Priolo) and Ana Marie (FR, by Anabaa) were the first two foreign contestants to run in 2003—four years after its designation as an international event in 1999—and finished third and eighth, respectively. Shalanaya (IRE, by Lomitas) finished fourth in 2009 before Edward Dunlop-trained Snow Fairy (IRE, by Intikhab) became the first foreign runner to win back-to-back G1 titles in 2010 and 2011. Last year’s winner Queens Ring came off a fourth-place finish in the Fuchu Himba Stakes (G2, 1,800m; Oct.14) and Vivlos, winner of the Dubai Turf (G1, 1,800m) in March, came in second to winner Crocosmia who captured her first grade-race title in the race. Rouge Buck and Smart Layer came off their victories against male opponents in the All Comers (G2, 2,200m; Sep.24) and the Kyoto Daishoten (G2, 2,400m; Oct.9), respectively. 2015 Best Three-Year-Old Filly Mikki Queen came off a long spell following her third-place finish in the Takarazuka Kinen (G1, 2,200m; Jun.25).

FROM: Masahiro Usuda General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: October 14, 2018 SUBJECT: RESULT OF THE 23RD SHUKA SHO (G1) The Shuka Sho, established in 1996, is run over 2,000 meters at Kyoto Racecourse and the third leg of the fillies’ Triple Crown reserved for the season’s three-year-old fillies following the Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas, G1, 1,600m) and the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks, G1, 2,400m). The Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1, 2,200m) was formally regarded as the third leg of the fillies’ Triple Crown until the race was opened to older fillies and mares; hence the Shuka Sho was established to take its place. Acquiring international G1 status in 2009, the Shuka Sho is open to a maximum of nine foreign runners. Gentildonna (JPN, by Deep Impact) became only the fourth filly in JRA history to claim the fillies’ Triple Crown title after Mejiro Ramonu (JPN, by Mogami; 1986), Still in Love (JPN, by Sunday Silence; 2003) and Apapane (JPN, by King Kamehameha; 2010), and proceeded to achieve greater accomplishment within her three-year-old season by winning the Japan Cup (G1, 2,400m) against a powerful field which contributed to earning the season’s highest honor of JRA’s Horse of the Year award in 2012. Almond Eye, winner of the Oka Sho-Yushun Himba made her bid to become JRA’s fifth filly to win all three of the fillies’ Triple Crown in her first-up run of her fall campaign. The race was also the first start of the fall for 2017 Best Two-Year-Old Filly Lucky Lilac.

  • The Sportsman of the Year? It's a Horse, of Course
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2015 There was every reason to believe that no horse would ever again win the Triple Crown, that because of the changing times and the way modern racehorses are trained and bred for speed over stamina the feat had become virtually impossible. Between American Pharoah and the previous Triple Crown winner Affirmed (1978), 13 horses had won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness but did not win the Belmont. On paper, some appeared to be invincible, but the difficulty of the task tripped them all up, at least until American Pharoah came along. American Pharoah’s sweep of the Triple Crown would be like a pitcher winning 30 games. That, too, is something from a bygone era that is never supposed to happen again. Cont. p3 Pharoah’s connections’ sportsmanship extended to their sharing him with his fans | Coady photography THE SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR? If there’s any justice, if the panelists who decide who will win the award haven’t spent the last year living under a rock, American Pharoah will beat these competitors as easily as he readily handled his four-legged foes on the racetrack.
