  • What Is Divine Mercy?
Detailed Information about Divine Mercy For more detailed information about Divine Mercy and Divine Mercy Sunday, please listen to Fr. Michael Gaitley through YouTube or visit https://www.marian.org. What Is Divine Mercy? Divine Mercy has been called "the greatest grassroots movement in the history of the Catholic Church" and has changed millions of lives. But what is it? The following is drawn from Fr. Michael Gaitley's book Divine Mercy Explained: Divine Mercy, in General Divine Mercy gets to the heart of Sacred Scripture. In fact, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church says, "The Gospel is the revelation in Jesus Christ of God's mercy to sinners" (1849). Right there: That summarizes it. Divine Mercy is the Gospel. It's the good news… And so, it gets to the very center of our faith. What is this thing that gets to the heart of Sacred Scripture and to the very center of our faith? To begin, mercy is "love's second name," as John Paul II said. It's a particular kind of love, a particular mode of love when it encounters suffering, poverty, brokenness, and sin. Divine Mercy is when God's love meets us and helps us in the midst of our suffering and sin. In fact, because this side of eternity we're all sinners and because suffering is our lot in life, God's love for us here always takes the form of mercy. It's always the Lord stepping out in compassion to help us poor, weak, and broken sinners. From our perspective, then, every good we receive is an expression Divine Mercy.

It is a prayer or Holy Mass that is offered for nine consecutive days. Scripturally, novenas take their origin from the nine days of prayer before Pentecost. After the Ascension, the apostles, and disciples, in obedience to the Lord, gathered in the upper room and devoted themselves to constant prayer, together with Mary, the Mother of Jesus (Acts 1:4-5). The nine days of prayer can also be considered as a representation of the nine months of Jesus in the womb of Mary. Like Jesus our Head, we His Body are also to be born of Mary and the Holy Spirit.

THE CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF RALEIGH CHARISMATIC RENEWAL THE FLAME April 2020 issue During this novena that Jesus Himself revealed to Saint Faustina, He asks that each day be dedicated to prayers for a different grouping of people. The novena below comes from these private revelations of Saint Faustina as recorded in her Diary of Divine Mercy. “I desire that during these nine days you bring souls to the fount of My mercy, that they may draw there from strength and refreshment and whatever graces they need in the hardships of life and, especially, at the hour of death. On each day you will bring to My Heart a differ- ent group of souls, and you will immerse them in this ocean of My mercy, and I will bring all these souls into the house of My Father. You will do this in this life and in the next. I will de- ny nothing to any soul whom you will bring to the fount of My mercy. • Divine Mercy Booklet
The Divine Mercy Chaplet (476) Our Lord said to St. Faustina: Encourage souls to say the Chaplet which I have given you… Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death… When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and dying person, not as the just Judge but as the Merciful Savior. In 1933, God gave St. Faustina a striking vision of His Mercy, St. Faustina tells us: "I saw a great light, with God the Father in the midst of it. Between this light and the earth I saw Jesus nailed to the Cross and in such a way that God, wanting to look upon the earth, had to look through Our Lord's wounds and I understood that God blessed the earth for the sake of Jesus." Of another vision on Sept. 13, 1935, she writes:"I saw an Angel, the executor of God's wrath... about to strike the earth...I began to beg God earnestly for the world with words which I heard interiorly. As I prayed in this way, I saw the Angel's helplessness, and he could not carry out the just punishment...." The following day an inner voice taught her to say this prayer: (For the novena start with the Prayer intention for each day on pgs.3 thru 7) The Chaplet of Mercy is recited or sung using the rosary beads Opening Prayers (optional) All: You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world.

hen someone mentions “Catholic devotions,” perhaps you think of a group of little Wold ladies gathered in the church to pray the Rosary. Or maybe you remember your own parents’ prayers to a particular saint years ago. But devotions do not have to be just for old ladies or a thing of the past. They can be an enriching part of your faith life and an inspiring part of your personal prayer practice today. Devotions are meaningful ways we can engage in prayer to Jesus, Mary, and the saints—beyond how we honor God with our words and actions through- outSAMPLE our busy days. They are not meant to replace the liturgy but to extend it into our daily lives. Indeed, the life of the church centers on the lit- urgy. • Now Let's Talk About the Divine Mercy Novena and Chaplet. I Want to Talk
Now let’s talk about the Divine Mercy Novena and Chaplet. I want to talk to you about where they came from, and why we say them. First the Chaplet of divine mercy. Where did it come from? It came directly from Jesus to sister Faustina. On the evening of Friday Septembers 13 1935 Sister Faustina had a vision of an angel, not just any angel, but the executor of divine wrath. The vision is recorded in her diary entry’s 474 to 476. She could see flashes of lighting coming from his hand and they were going fourth to the earth. It was the wrath of God to be sent to a certain place for their sin. Sister Faustina heard in her soul a prayer, as she said it the angel became helpless and could not carry out the just punishment which was rightly due for sins. The words she prayed where these, “Eternal Farther, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ for our sins and those of the whole world; for the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us.” That is the chaplet of Divine Mercy. Now the next day she entered the Chapel and Jesus again spoke to her, He said He wanted her to say that prayer and it will serve to appease my wrath. And he told her he wanted it prayed on the rosary. He wanted her to start the Chaplet with one Our Father, one Hail Mary and one Apostles creed.
