    Exchange Report Yonsei University (연세대학교) Seoul, South Korea KIM, Joo Eun BBA in Global Business & Marketing, Year 3 Fall 2017 Part I: Monthly Activity Log August 2017 I arrived in Seoul in late August, a few days before the dorm check-in day. After relaxing and exploring Seoul with my family and friends, I moved in to Yonsei University’s SK Global House on the 26th. The few days before Orientation is a great time to snap some gorgeous campus photos as students are still on holiday and there is barely any crowd. Most people after moving in went to stock up on home supplies at Daiso (this chain of stores has economical prices). There is a large Daiso located across the road from Exit 2 Sinchon station, and a smaller one before that right next to the station exit. For my SIM card plan, I got it activated at SK Telecom in the main Sinchon road in front of school. I found it really unique how you could pick the last four digits of your phone number. Before the start of the semester on September 1st, I had catch-ups with my family and friends who came to visit. We went for a fantastic Korean BBQ at 형제갈비 in Sinchon (the BBQ is incredibly pricey, but the 24H 갈비탕 is very worth it), visited 경복궁 while wearing 한복 and also had a refreshing 팥빙수 at the iconic 설빙 dessert place. September 2017 Semester started on the 1st, and the first week or so was about settling into the study rhythm and groove of the University lifestyle.

Seoul Festival ( ) Emily Manthei t seems like no other city in the world has spent as much effort and enthusiasm in making itself a world-class I tourist destination as Seoul, South Korea. A late-bloomer in the 20th century, South Korea’s economic and political landscape was hampered by its proximity to an unfriendly northern neighbor, but it has overcome incredible odds to become the manufacturing powerhouse it is today. But Seoul had bigger aspirations, as manufacturing does not a tourist destination make. The strategic development of Korean pop-culture began with internationally acclaimed dark revenge dramas. Popping up at Sundance and Cannes, these films put South Korean directors on the radar alongside art-house filmmakers like Wong Kar-wai and Ang Lee. Next came K-pop, modeled on the structure of the American boy/girl-band era and the music videos of Japanese pop bands. K-pop spent years gaining momentum in Asia and finally exploded on the western world stage with Psy’s kitschy “Gangnam Style” music video in 2012. Similarly, addictive K-dramas like “City Hunter” offer daytime soap/telenovela formats with a cult-like following, which has spread through online platforms like Hulu and Viki. And, of course, all of this pop art incorporates the futuristic interactivity and technology you’d expect from tech manufacturers of innovative gadgets, such as Samsung. Film, television and music also expose audiences other great things in South Korea. There are incomparable beauty products and spa services for a generation obsessed with youth; a fashion culture where traditional Asian styles are made trendy; and an emphasis on food preparation and quality that could make Korean soul food the new bento box in midtown offices.

Monthly Activity Log August On-campus housing check-in starts on the 26th of August. I arrived in Korea one week in advance and traveled with my Korean friend. I booked a 7-day train ticket at a discount rate of 42,000 won. I traveled from Seoul all the way south to Busan and visited several cities in between. Gyeongju and its relics were breathtaking. Gyeongsang and the history of Silla were capitating. Busan and Haeundae Beach were my favorite. Jello and its ancient village in the mountains were beyond description. Jeonju was the city of the best Korean food. All of them were so unique and unforgettable. The last few days of August, I spent my days exploring Seoul for the first time in my life. My local friends showed me around and took me to the most authentic places in Seoul. It was an amazing experience. September September was in comparison pretty chill. As I have finished traveling around Korea already, I spend most of my time making friends and attending classes. My major activities are all in Sinchon, Hongdae and Edae eara. There are a lot of food options affordable for college students. Although I didn’t join the Mentor’s Club, meeting new friends wasn’t challenging at all. I met some local friends in the finance classes I was taking and also some exchange students I met in dorm. I usually dine with my local friends near school and explore around Seoul with other exchange students.

    Korea Korea https://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2800.htm Fact Sheet July 17, 2018 U.S.-SOUTH KOREA RELATIONS The United States and Korea’s Joseon Dynasty established diplomatic relations under the 1882 Treaty of Peace, Amity, Commerce, and Navigation, and the first U.S. diplomatic envoy arrived in Korea in 1883. U.S.- Korea relations continued until 1905, when Japan assumed direction over Korean foreign affairs. In 1910, Japan began a 35-year period of colonial rule over Korea. Following Japan's surrender in 1945, at the end of World War II, the Korean Peninsula was divided at the 38th parallel into two occupation zones, with the United States in the South and the Soviet Union in the North. Initial hopes for a unified, independent Korea were not realized, and in 1948 two separate nations were established -- the Republic of Korea (R.O.K.) in the South, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in the North. In 1949, the United States established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Korea. On June 25, 1950, North Korean forces invaded the R.O.K.. Led by the United States, a United Nations coalition of 16 countries undertook its defense. Following China's entry into the war on behalf of North Korea later that year, a stalemate ensued for the final two years of the conflict until an armistice was concluded on July 27, 1953. A peace treaty has never been signed. In 1953, at the conclusion of the Korean War, the United States and the Republic of Korea signed a Mutual Defense Treaty, the foundation of a comprehensive alliance that endures today.
