FEMINISM, IMPERIALISM AND ORIENTALISM Women’s History Review, Vol. 7, No. 4, 1998 Feminism, Imperialism and Orientalism: the challenge of the ‘Indian woman’ JOANNA LIDDLE & SHIRIN RAI University of Warwick, Coventry, United Kingdom ABSTRACT This article examines the content and process of imperialist discourse on the ‘Indian woman’ in the writings of two North American women, one writing at the time of ‘first wave’ feminism, the other a key exponent of the ‘second wave’ of the movement. By analysing these writings, it demonstrates how the content of the discourse was reproduced over time with different but parallel effects in the changed political circumstances, in the first case producing the Western imperial powers as superior on the scale of civilisation, and in the second case producing Western women as the leaders of global feminism. It also identifies how the process of creating written images occurred within the context of each author’s social relations with the subject, the reader and the other authors, showing how an orientalist discourse can be produced through the author’s representation of the human subjects of whom she writes; how this discourse can be reproduced through the author’s uncritical use of earlier writers; and how the discourse can be activated in the audience through the author’s failure to challenge established cognitive structures in the reader. Introduction This article has two main aims. First, it examines how aspects of imperialist discourse on the colonised woman were taken up in Western women’s writing at the time of ‘first wave’ feminism, and reproduced in the ‘second wave’ of the movement within the context of the changing power relations between the imperial powers and the former colonies. -

Savitribai Phule
Stories of Courage #1: Savitribai Phule Savitribai Phule (3 January 1831 – 10 March 1897) was an educationalist, feminist icon, poet, and anti-caste social reformer from what is today the Satara District in Maharashtra, India. She, like her husband, Jotirao Phule belonged to the Mali community, which is today considered to be an Other Backward Caste (OBC). Educated by her husband, against the wishes of their community in specific and society in general, Savitribai Phule went on to complete teacher training courses and is considered to be the first woman teacher in India. The couple set up several schools for girls and for students from the lower castes. Savitribai Phule’s actions invited the ire of conservative upper caste and lower caste members of society alike. As a result, she is said to have carried an extra sari on her way to teach school to change into after being attacked with cow dung by detractors. Savitribai Phule toiled tirelessly to spread education, which she believed would help eradicate regressive practices such as child marriage, sati, and untouchability. 2 Stories of Courage #2: Jotirao Phule Jotirao Phule (11 April 1827 – 28 November 1890) was a radical critical thinker and anti-caste, pro-secular education social reformer. He was from the Satara District in Maharashtra, India and belonged to the Mali community, which is today an Other Backward Caste (OBC). He believed that secular education would be the means by which the lower castes could liberate themselves from Brahmanical hegemony and hypocrisy. Jotirao Phule was married to Savitribai Phule, and along with her set up schools for girls and for students from the lower castes. -

GENDER AND Professionalism IN Law: THE CHALLENGE OF (WOMEN’S) BIOGRAPHY Mary Jane Mossman* This paper explores the story of a woman who “created” her life in the law in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centur- ies. Although now almost unknown, Cornelia Sorabji achieved prominence as a woman pioneer in the legal profession, who pro- vided legal services to women clients in northern India, the Pur- dahnashins. Sorabji’s experiences as a woman in law were often similar to the stories of other first women lawyers in a number of different jurisdictions at the end of the nineteenth century: all of these women had to overcome gender barriers to gain admission to the legal professions, and they were often the only woman in law in their jurisdictions for many years. Yet, as Sorabji’s story reveals, while ideas about gender and the culture of legal profes- sionalism could present formidable barriers for aspiring women lawyers, these ideas sometimes intersected in paradoxical ways to offer new opportunities for women to become legal professionals. In exploring the impact of gender and legal professionalism on Sorabji’s legal work, the paper also suggests that her story presents 2009 CanLIIDocs 23 a number of challenges and contradictions that may require new approaches to gender history so as to capture the complexity of stor- ies about women lawyers. History, Culture, Heritage and Socio-Political Movements in Tamil Nadu History of Tamil Society INTRODUCTION Tamil civilization, as we have seen, begins atleast three centuries before the Common Era (CE). As seafaring people, Tamil traders and sailors established commercial and cultural links across the seas and merchants from foreign territories also visited the Tamil region. The resulting cultural and mercantile activities and internal developments led to urbanization in this region. Towns and ports emerged. Coins and currency came into circulation. Written documents were produced. The TamilBrahmi script was adopted to write the Tamil language. Classical Tamil poems were composed. Sources for the study of early Tamil society The sources for reconstructing the history of the ancient Tamils are: 1. Classical Tamil literature 2. Epigraphy (inscriptions) 3. Non-Tamil and Foreign Literature The Classical Sangam Tamil Literature The Classical Sangam corpus (collection) consists of the Tholkappiyam, the Pathinen Melkanakku(18 Major works) and the Pathinen Kilkanakku(18 minor works) and the five epics. Much of it includes women’s positing in society, their education, health, economic position, gender equality etc. What one can conclude from such discussions is that women have always held a certain paradoxical position in our developing country. The women position in Indian Judiciary has again been a debatable, topic which has henceforth never been into exact numerical representation. The women clan involved into the legal network of benches has been notably less. The women position has been the highest in the Supreme Court of India with ‘Nine’ Judges. The research work includes statistical data with the research of Vidhi legal policy. “The District Courts and the courts below them comprise the ‘lower’ or ‘subordinate’ judiciary. These courts lie under the administrative control of High Courts. Each judicial district in India has one District Court, below which lie civil and criminal courts of original jurisdiction,” the study notes, and finds that 71% judges in the subordinate judiciary across India are male. Motivation/Background: The women position has been the highest in the Supreme Court of India with ‘Nine’ Judges. The women clan involved into the legal network of benches has been notably less.
