MAULIK PANCHOLY “One of the best speakers [we’ve] had...” —Northwestern University South Asian Students Association Recognizable from his roles on shows such as 30 Rock, Weeds, Whitney, Phineas and Ferb, and Sanjay and Craig, Maulik Pancholy is an award-winning actor, author and activist whose career has spanned hit television shows, animated series, the Broadway stage, and films. In 2019, Maulik released his first book, a middle-grade novel titled The Best at It, which was a 2020 Stonewall Honor Book, a 2019 Junior Library Guild Selection, included in Chicago Public Library’s Best of the Best Books of 2019, and listed as one of Evanston Public Library’s 101 Great Books for Kids. It has received starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, and Booklist. Drawn from his own experience, The Best at It is about a twelve-year-old, gay, Indian American boy coming into his own. It has been called at once, “exuberant and heart-wrenching.” Maulik was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2014 to serve on the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs). As a Commissioner, he co-founded the anti-bullying campaign, acttochange.org, which he continues to Chair today. For his advocacy on behalf of the AAPI and LGBTQIA+ communities, he has received an Asian American Arts Alliance Award, the Human Rights Campaign’s Visibility Award, and was named to Out Magazine’s Top 100 list. Metacritic Journal for Comparative Studies and Theory 3.2 (2017): https://doi.org/10.24193/mjcst.2017.4.04 Abstract: My proposal aims to investigate the changes in the Romanian literary discourse on nature and the effects of industrialization following the 1989 revolution in comparison to the ideological discourse of the post-war era. If Romanian post-war literary discourse is firmly tied to the underlying ideology of Communism, then any attempt to investigate the discourse on nature in this period must be made alongside a reading of the Communist discourse on nature. In this respect, the situation of Romanian post-1989 prose that contains aspects of the influence of Communist industrialization on nature provides an interesting case study on the effects of the post-industrial era on literature itself. Thus, my proposal will focus on a number of novels written after 1989 in an ecocritical mode of reading. Keywords: ecocriticism, nature, ideology, Romanian post-war literature, 1989 Revolution Seeing as Romanian post-war literary discourse is invariably subordinated to the Communist ideology, analysing nature writing, or any discourse on nature of this period for that matter, from an ecocritical perspective could be seen as both a productive and a fruitless endeavour. As paradoxical as it may seem, to talk about nature in Romanian Communism, and then to talk about the Communist discourse on nature implies a careful, exhaustive, and therefore productive analysis of its ideology.

Weeds Ahave a profound biological, economic, and social impact on U.S. forests and rangelands, and both their populations and control costs are growing exponentially. Some have been introduced into this country acci- dentally, but most were brought here as ornamentals or for livestock forage. These plants arrived without their natural predators of insects and diseases that tend to keep native plants in natural balance. They infest forest and rangelands, increasingly eroding land productivity, hindering land use, and management activi- ties. They are altering native plant communities, nutrient cycling, and hydrology; they are degrading ripari- an areas, altering fire regimes and the intensity of wildfires, as well as disrupting recreational experiences.
