EDY: Conditions of Acceptance: The United States Military, the Press, and the “Woman War Correspondent,” 1846-1945 (Under the direction of Jean Folkerts) This dissertation chronicles the history of American women who worked as war correspondents through the end of World War II, demonstrating the ways the military, the press, and women themselves constructed categories for war reporting that promoted and prevented women’s access to war: the “war correspondent,” who covered war-related news, and the “woman war correspondent,” who covered the woman’s angle of war. As the first study to examine these concepts, from their emergence in the press through their use in military directives, this dissertation relies upon a variety of sources to consider the roles and influences, not only of the women who worked as war correspondents but of the individuals and institutions surrounding their work. Nineteenth and early 20th century newspapers continually featured the woman war correspondent—often as the first or only of her kind, even as they wrote about more than sixty such women by 1914. -

Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection University of Georgia Libraries, Athens, Georgia The University of Georgia Library preserves a substantial amount of archival audio material of all formats in both the Peabody Awards Archives and the Walter J. Brown Media Archives. The Peabody Award is one of the most respected and coveted awards in broadcasting. It was conceived in 1939 by Lambdin Kay, manager of WSB Radio in Atlanta, and sponsored by John E. Drewry, dean of the Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. The first awards were given in 1940 for radio broadcasts of 1939. Television entries began in 1949. Just this year, over 1,100 audio and visual entries were received at the awards office, totaling approximately 5,000 physical documents which will be added to the archives after judging is complete. The Peabody Awards Archives is administrated by the University of Georgia library and is housed in the Main Library on campus. This archives is important for studying the history of broadcasting, since every entry submitted—not just those which win Peabody Awards—has been kept, along with any paper material and ephemera submitted with the programs, preserving a snapshot of the best in annual broadcasting from around the world. The Library’s Walter J. Brown Media Archives is made up of a broader range of campus, local, and southeast regional archival audio and visual materials. -

ProPublica Report to Stakeholders The Power of Partnerships May-August, 2014 The latest in a series of periodic reports to our stakeholders about progress at ProPublica. Earlier reports, including our annual report for 2013 and report for the first period of 2014, are available at ProPublica.org. An Unequalled Breadth of Partnerships ProPublica has had 111 different publishing partners over six years—but per- haps more remarkable is the fact that we had 26 partners in the middle four months of 2014 alone. Both the quality and the range of these partnerships were noteworthy, including stories published exclusively with the New York Times, NPR News, the Washington Post, the Atlantic and WNYC. Our work also appeared in BuzzFeed, the Daily Beast, Mashable, Source, the Lens, Center for Investigative Reporting, Univision and Upworthy. We worked with Amazon on ebooks, and with other newspapers including the Albany Times Union, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Dallas Morning News, Miami Herald, Newark Star-Led- ger, New York Daily News, Philadelphia Inquirer and Tampa Bay Times. Pro- Publica stories also ran in the magazines Marie Claire and Sports Illustrated. We pursue such partnerships carefully. Some are de- signed to get greater reach for important stories. But most are intended to maximize the chances that our work will have impact and spur change. So when we undertake a national story with a local angle, we’ll often publish the re- sult with a lead local outlet, where the story will naturally be of greater salience. A tale of abusive charges under Medicare that centered in Chicago, published in July in the Chicago Tribune, is a perfect example; so is the story published just two weeks later in the Tampa Bay Times about how a statute designed to protect against predatory auto title loans had been undermined in Florida. -

On the one hand, our country operates under a broad consensus that secrecy is antithetical to democratic rule and can encourage a variety of political deformations. But the obvious pitfalls are not the end of the story. A long list of abuses notwithstanding, secrecy, like openness, remains an essential prerequisite of self-governance. FROM FAIRNESS TO FAKE NEWS: HOW REGULATIONS CAN RESTORE PUBLIC TRUST IN THE MEDIA Sarah Clemens* Journalists face a credibility crisis, plagued by chants of fake news and a crowded rat race in the primetime ratings. Critics of the media look at journalists as the problem. Within this domain, legal scholarship has generated a plethora of pieces critiquing media credibility with less attention devoted to how and why public trust of the media has eroded. This Note offers a novel explanation and defense. To do so, it asserts the proposition that deregulating the media contributed to the proliferation of fake news and led to a decline in public trust of the media. To support this claim, this Note first briefly examines the historical underpinnings of the regulations that once made television broadcasters “public trustees” of the news. This Note also touches on the historical role of the Public Broadcasting Act that will serve as the legislative mechanism under which media regulations can be amended. Delving into what transpired as a result of deregulation and prodding the effects of limiting oversight over broadcast, this Note analyzes the current public perception of broadcast news, putting forth the hypothesis that deregulation is correlated to a negative public perception of broadcast news. This Note analyzes the effect of deregulation by exploring recent examples of what has emerged as a result of deregulation, including some of the most significant examples of misinformation in recent years. In so doing, it discusses reporting errors that occurred ahead of the Iraq War, analyzes how conspiracy theories spread in mainstream broadcast, and discusses the effect of partisan reporting on public perception of the media.
