World Directory of Minorities Europe MRG Directory –> Russian Federation –> Russian or Volga Germans Print Page Close Window Russian or Volga Germans Profile According to the 2002 national census, there are 597,212 Russian or Volga Germans in the Russian Federation. Volga Germans are primarily Lutheran and Mennonite in religion. Their number has fallen by almost half since 1989, as many have taken advantage of naturalization opportunities in Germany. Historical context Large-scale German settlement in Russia first occurred in the sixteenth century following Catherine the Great's decree of 1763 granting steppe land along the Volga River to Germans. In 1924 the Soviet regime created the Volga German ASSR with German as its official language. The republic was disbanded during the war and its German population (895,637) deported to Siberia and Central Asia. The Germans were not allowed to resettle in the region despite being rehabilitated in 1965. They settled instead in Siberia, the Ural mountains and the republics of Central Asia, especially Kazakhstan. From the late 1980s, a number of German organizations were established: Revival (Wiedergeburt, Vozrozhdenie); Freedom (Freiheit, Svoboda); and the Interstate Organization of Russian Germans (Zwischenstaathischer Verein der Russlanddeutschen). These organizations have campaigned for the restoration of their homeland but have faced strong opposition from the local populations of the Saratov and Volgograd oblasts. The German Government has allocated significant funds for the creation of German cultural centres and schools in Central Asia and Russia. This has not, however, deterred hundreds of thousands of Germans from emigrating to Germany. Ethnic Germans, their spouses and their descendants have been able to naturalize as German citizens through the Law of Return, in spite of often lacking even rudimentary knowledge of the German language. -

Across multiple migrations and settlements from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, the Volga Germans’ self- constructed group identity served historically as a tool with which to navigate uncertain politics of belonging. -

CHAPTER-1 INTERNATIONAL CUISINE: THE COOKING OF GREAT BRITAIN Historical Background Unlike the French, the British have no Grande cuisine or customs of elegant restaurant eating. Almost everyone royalty and commoner ate the same food, however fancy or plain. The royal kitchens merely drew on a wider variety of foodstuffs and in greater quantities. Britain was a worldwide trader since the 16 th century and could afford to import the best the world had to offer from tea, coffee and rice to exotic spices and fruits and all these found their way into home cooking. The British Breakfast The British consider it their finest meal. A truly traditional British breakfast would include Baps (a soft round roll) or some other traditional bread with preserves, bacon, sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms, eggs - boiled, fried or scrambled, ham kedgeree, stewed prunes, sautéed kidneys, smoked haddock or kippers, cereals with milk and of course tea. The English breakfast owes, in particular much to the Scots. They eat an even more substantial breakfast that the English and the Welsh or the Irish. They consume vast quantities of porridge and considerable amount of bread usually in the form of a breakfast roll called a ‘Bap” and drink large quantities of tea sometimes laced with whisky. Aberdeen was the birthplace of the breakfast sausage, while Dundee is the home of marmalade without which no breakfast is completed. Bacon is in original entirely English. Ham, which also often figures on the breakfast table, is the cured hind leg of the pig. Only the English cured the pig, usually by salting, while the rest of Europe ate it fresh. -

Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Konrad Jarausch Karen Auerbach Karen Hagemann © 2020 Madeline James ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Madeline James: Domesticating the German East: Nazi Propaganda And Women’s Roles in the “Germanization” of the Warthegau during World War II (Under the direction of Konrad Jarausch and Karen Auerbach) This thesis utilizes Nazi women’s propaganda to explore the relationship between Nazi gender and racial ideology, particularly in relation to the Nazi Germanization program in the Warthegau during World War II. At the heart of this study is an examination of a paradox inherent in Nazi gender ideology, which simultaneously limited and expanded “Aryan” German women’s roles in the greater German community. Far from being “returned to the home” by the Nazis in 1933, German women experienced an expanded sphere of influence both within and beyond the borders of the Reich due to their social and cultural roles as “mothers of the nation.” As “bearers of German culture,” German women came to occupy a significant role in Nazi plans to create a new “German homeland” in Eastern Europe. This female role of “domesticating” the East, opposite the perceived “male” tasks of occupation, expulsion, and resettlement, entailed cultivating and reinforcing Germanness in the Volksdeutsche (ethnic German) communities, molding them into “future masters of the German East.” This thesis therefore also examines the ways in which Reich German women utilized the notion of a distinctly female cultural sphere to stake a claim in the Germanizing mission. -

In the year of the Columbian Quincentennial, it seemed appropriate to probe, once again, the theme of "people on the move." Looking at current events in Europe, it is quite clear that the consequences of migration, namely acculturation and ethnic interaction, are problems of European as well as American history. Five hundred years ago, the peoples of the Old World first encountered the peoples of the world across the Atlantic-a world that was an old world in its own right but that soon received the label "New World" by the newcomers. -
Volga Settlers Found Their Footing in Sheboygan
Volga settlers found their footing in Sheboygan From 1764 to 1767, 23,000 Germans emigrated to a small area of Russia along the Volga River at the behest of Russia’s German-born princess, Catherine the Great. A total of 104 colonies were founded along the Volga River near Saratov. Immigrants to the Volga region came mainly from the German duchies of Hessen, and the Rhineland, and from the southwestern German states of Baden, Württemberg, Alsace and the Palatinate. Though the stoic eighteenth-century pioneers settled into their new homes, within 100 years, many began leaving the settlements their ancestors had built. Beginning with a few scouts to the United States, who located inexpensive and abundant land in 1874, German migration from Russia eventually reached massive proportions. By 1920, more than 200,000 German Russians resided in the United States. The Volga Germans were different from earlier German immigrants. Their speech was laced with Russian words and German-Americans considered their German archaic. Along with their English-speaking neighbors, German-Americans referred to them as Russians and to their settlements as Russiantown. Not everyone who came to Sheboygan intended to stay. Some men, responding to reports that good wages could be earned in a relatively short period of time, intended to work in the United States for a few years, save a sufficient amount of money, and then return to a life of ease in the old country. But, World War I halted travel between Sheboygan and the Volga villages for a few years, and all thoughts of returning to the Russian homeland ended with reports of Bolshevik atrocities during the Revolution of 1917.
