Founded in 1974, STARFLEET remains the oldest and largest continuously operating Star Trek fan organization in the world. STARFLEET celebrated its 35th year just as Star Trek received a new injection of energy and enthusiasm in 2009 with the release of the 11th feature film in the franchise. For almost 40 years, STARFLEET has provided Star Trek fans a way to meet each other, make friends, have fun, give back to their communities, and show that the dream of Star Trek’s creator, Gene Roddenberry, can live long and prosper. On the local level, members gather with other fans for a variety of activities. This unique organization has over 250 chapters worldwide linking members from one corner of the planet to the other into one huge fan-run organization. On the international level, STARFLEET offers our members a wealth of unique fan resources and cross-cultural connections that cannot be found in any other Star Trek fan club. Who joins STARFLEET? There is no “typical” STARFLEET member. We are people of all ages and from all walks of life who enjoy Star Trek and science fiction in all its forms: the major motion pictures, the television series, and the numerous books and magazines. There are members in high school and college, people at middle age, great-grandmothers in their 90s and children in preschool. Some members with families have signed up their newborns as cadets. There are no restrictions on joining STARFLEET. We enthusiastically celebrate the Vulcan concept of IDIC: Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. Our Prime Directive is to make new friends, to share our interest in Star Trek in an open environment, to serve our communities, and most of all, to have fun. Each member brings his or her special abilities to the group. We recognize this value by assigning fictional ranks and positions within the Fleet, reflecting the interests of the members. Members get promoted for participation in their local Chapter, or at the Regional or international Fleet level. New members in Chapters can start with introductory ranks like Cadet and Ensign and get promoted up through higher ranks like Lieutenant and Commander. When members get involved more actively at higher levels of the organization, they can get promoted even further to Captain or to flag ranks like Commodore or Admiral. Why Star Trek ? The show’s debut on television back in 1966 was the first successful mass visualization of the future. Star Trek’s enduring strength arose from the fact that it was the first science fiction show to emphasize plot and character—and to present a universe where people of all races worked together to solve common problems. In short, Star Trek presents a hopeful future. 5 STARFLEET Organization REGIONS and CHAPTERS STARFLEET is currently divided into 250 local Chapters spread across North America and onto three other continents. Each chapter is named as a different starship or space station. Chapters range in size from as small as ten members to as many as a hundred. Each chapter is unique; some meet in person, others gather over the Internet for online chats and e-mail exchanges. STARFLEET Chapters are grouped into Regions with each Region covering a different geographical area. These regions will often hold gatherings where crews of many Chapters get together for conferences, parties, charity events, and a whole range of other activities. All STARFLEET members can gather at our annual International Conference, which is held in a different location each year. Some of our recent International Conferences have been located in such diverse cities as Dallas in 2013, Philadelphia, Denver, and San Jose. Other International Conferences have been in rural locations such as upstate New York; Greensboro, North Carolina and Wagoner, Oklahoma. STARFLEET Chapter events and activities have been featured in the news media, both press and televised. STARFLEET Chapters work both with local communities and with national charities. Chain of Command What the casual member sees As in Star Trek, STARFLEET has a chain of command. Each Chapter is led by a Commanding Officer and an Executive Officer. Most members never need to go beyond their Chapter CO or XO to get a problem solved. Chapters report to Regional Coordinators, who form a legislative body known as the Admiralty Board. Each Region elects their Coordinator for a period of two years, usually from a pool of Commanding Officers who wish to run for the position. If a member has a problem which their CO or XO cannot handle (or a problem with the CO or XO themselves), the member can approach their Regional Coordinator for assistance. The members of STARFLEET also elect a president and vice-president for the entire organization once every three years via a club-wide mail-in ballot. The Commander and Vice-Commander usually run with a “cabinet” of members who will take the positions of the 7-member Executive Committee (see page 8). The Executive Committee handles the day-to- day business of STARFLEET along with certain key club functions. 6 Media Citations • The New York Times • Newsweek • MSNBC • The Wall Street Journal • The New York Daily News • The Boston Globe • Maxim Magazine • Fox 5 in New York City • CBS affiliate News10 in Tampa Bay, FL • Q13 Fox in Seattle • WAFB Channel 9 news Baton Rouge, LA • KYW1060, Philadelphia’s news radio station • The Daily Record in Morris Country, NJ • The News and Advance of Lynchburg, VA • The Pittsburgh Post Gazette • South Carolina’s The State • The Advocate in Baton Rouge, LA • The West Virginia Gazette • The Asbury Park Press in New Jersey • WashingtonPost.com • PressOfAtlanticCity.com • Boston.com • NJ.com • AirlockAlpha.com 7 Corporate Structure Operating as a Non-Profit 501(C)7 Corporation Most members never encounter the corporate aspects of STARFLEET, but the organization must still adhere to the reporting and regulatory requirements outlined by the IRS and the State of North Carolina for non-profit corporations. STARFLEET was incorporated back in 1991, and the advantage of being non-profit to an organization of our size is immense when one considers the revenue generated from thousands of new and renewing members each year. The Admiralty Board forms the Board of Directors for STARFLEET, with the Commander, STARFLEET serving as the Chairman.

Special Guests Karl Urban Original Star Trek series fan and New Zealand-born actor Karl Urban actively pursued and won the role of Dr. Leonard McCoy on 2009’s motion picture named, appropriately enough, Star Trek. In his portrayal, Karl evoked many of the subtle mannerisms and vocalisms made famous by one DeForest Kelley of an earlier era – one could consider his performance as an ultimate fan tribute. Karl was interested in acting from a very early age, debuting at age 8 in the New Zealand television series Pioneer Woman. Internationally he appeared in both Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and its spin-off Xena: Warrior Princess, playing recurring roles in both American/New Zealand series. He eventually started working on Hollywood productions and in relatively no time was in big productions such as The Lord of the Rings, The Bourne Supremacy, The Chronicles of Riddick, and Doom. Hollywood press has speculated that he could have landed the role of “James Bond” had not previous film commitments gotten in the way (the role went to Daniel Craig). Other films he appeared in include Red, Dredd, The Loft, Pete’s Dragon, while Karl most recently appeared as “Skurge” in 2016’s Thor: Ragnarok. Karl is active on the convention circuit and makes his first bombshell appearance at this year’s edition of Trekonderoga! Be sure not to miss your opportunity to meet Karl onboard the original Enterprise – where else but in Sickbay, naturally – in a time-defying trip back to the original series sets with today’s Dr. McCoy! Appears Saturday & Sunday only Gates McFadden Not many Enterprise-D characters could call their Captain by his first name, but Doctor Beverly Crusher, memorably played by Gates McFadden, certainly could – and did.

  • Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura) Wants to Make Science of Star Trek Reality," Sun·Herald, June 4, 1977, N.P., Nichols Bio File, NASA HQ
More Than "Just Uhura" Understanding Star Trek's Lt. Uhura, Civil Rights, and Space History Margaret A. Weitekamp s the scene opens on an isolated roadhouse bar, the viewers' A first glimpse inside the establishment reveals a tall, attractive woman striding confidently toward a set of swinging doors, her profile reflected in the photographs hanging along the hallway. As she pushes through the doors, the music booms. She greets some friends at a table and heads straight for the bar, her long hair swing ing behind her, her step in time with the music. At the bar, she places a large order of drinks with alien-sounding names. Her good time with her fellow Starfleet cadets is interrupted, however, when a young man, a local, whom the viewers recognize as an inebriated James T. Kirk, starts hitting on her, trying to buy her a drink: "Her shot's on me," he directs the bartender. "Her shot's on her," she answers. 'Thanks, but no thanks." As they banter, she remains unflustered, an equal in the verbal spar ring. When Kirk asks her for her name, she replies, "It's Uhura." 22 MORE THAN " JUST UHURA" 23 The author with actress Nichelle Nichols, who gave an interview for this chapter, in the National Air and Space Museum's art gallery. "Uhura what?" "Just Uhura," she replies. Her brush-off answer is an inside joke for Star Trek fans: in the original 1960s television show, her char acter never had a first name. (Kirk's quest to learn her full name became a running joke throughout the 2009 film .) But Kirk refuses to be deterred by her rebuffs.

John Paladin Lolita Fatjo Bonnie Moss Special Guests Ethan Peck The grandson of Hollywood legend and Oscar winning actor Gregory “To Kill a Mockingbird” Peck, Ethan Peck made his grand entry into Star Trek lore during the second season of Star Trek: Discovery as none other than one the franchise’s most iconic characters, Mr. Spock! Born in Los Angeles, he played a variety of sports in high school and studied the cello. He attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and won the 2009 Sonoma International Film Festival’s Best Actor award in 2009. He was appearing in films and television productions, such as That 70’s Show, 10 Things I Hate About You, The Curse of Sleeping Beauty, and The Honor List. After landing the role of Spock in Discovery, Ethan says he “dove” right into watching Star Trek’s original mid-60s run to learn about the character of Spock and Leonard Nimoy’s performances, even reading Nimoy’s two books on the subject: I Am Not Spock and the follow-up I Am Spock. During the first few months of filming, he would have Nimoy as Spock in his mind as he delivered his own performances, until he found the “centre of the character” within himself. This is the first time Ethan visits us at Trekonderoga! Join Ethan as he tours the stunning standing sets of the U.S.S. Enterprise, and don’t miss your chance to meet this amazing, fine young actor in person! Appears Friday & Saturday only Terry Farrell Terry Farrell brought to life the character of Jadzia Dax, a member of one the more interesting alien species from the Star Trek universe, the symbiont Trill.

Markees 1 Jenny Markees Mr. Taylor AP English Lit/p.5 17 April 2014 Boldly Going Nowhere: An Examination of the Women in Star Trek For close to fifty years, Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek universe has captured the hearts and minds of people young and old. Most people will recognize the quote “Space, the final frontier…” and the Vulcan split-fingered salute as being from Star Trek, even if they have had little personal exposure to the saga. When it originally aired in 1966, no one knew how far Roddenberry’s creation would boldly go, though some recognized it for pushing boundaries at that time.1 By the early 2000s, Star Trek had grown into a franchise of six television shows and ten movies, ranging from the original series and its animated spinoff to The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise, as well as movies focusing on the casts of the original 1966 series and The Next Generation. However, popular interest was beginning to wane, until J. J. Abrams rebooted and revitalized the universe with two new films, Star Trek in 2009,2 and Star Trek Into Darkness in 2013.3 Although there was a huge amount of hype for the arrival of the two reboot films, many fans were left feeling somewhat conflicted about some of the characters and the overall writing. One topic that many fans gravitated towards was the representation of female characters in the reboot films; while many discussed the new Lt. Nyota Uhura, others examined the general trends among the female characters.

The movement fromLoser to Alliance constitutes a metanarrative endemic to nerd culture. As the “alien half-breed” of the original series, Spock inhabits the paradoxical role of the superior degenerate, a corruption of pure blood from an advanced civilization. At the same time, he is the machine, the personification of mathematical accuracy, redeemed from his isolation by friendship with the crew of the Enterprise. The ship thereby becomes a microcosm of the United Federation of Planets, a galactic and democratic state. Spock serves as the lynchpin of Trek’s cosmopolitan project, revaluing the nerd as the hero of trans-species friendship.
