Winner of the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2), the Fantasy Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park and the Santa Anita Oaks (G2) in her past three starts, Swiss Skydiver will get a five-pound weight allowance Saturday and carry 118 pounds. Mike Smith has the mount and will break from post position seven. Smith is a two-time Toyota Blue Grass winner, having scored in 1993 with Prairie Bayou and in 1994 with Florida-bred Holy Bull. No filly has won the Toyota Blue Grass and only one filly (Harriet Sue, 1944) has run in the race since it debuted at Keeneland during the track’s inaugural Spring Meet in April 1937. In 1948, future Hall of Fame female Bewitch was scratched from the Blue Grass. Another accom- plished runner in the field is Jackpot Farm’s Basin. Winner of the Runhappy Hopeful Stakes (G1) at Basin/COADY PHTOO Saratoga and most recently second in a division of the Arkansas Derby (G1), Basin ranks ninth on the Derby leaderboard with 50 points. Trained by Steve Asmussen, Basin will be ridden Saturday by Ricardo Santana Jr. and break from post position eight. Representing Florida is Shivaree, a homebred for Jacks or Better Farms Inc. The chestnut son of Ocala Stud stallion Awesome of Course was most recently third in a top level, optional claiming race won by Sole Volante at Gulfstream on June 10 after finishing second to Kentucky Derby point-leader Tiz the Law in the Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby. John Velazquez will ride Shivaree for trainer Ralph Nicks. Invading from California is Jim and Donna Daniell’s Rushie. Trained by Michael McCarthy, Rushie finished third in last month’s Santa Anita Derby (G1) in his stakes debut to gain 20 Derby points. Javier Castellano has the mount and will break from post position 10. Also looking to add to his Derby points total is John Oxley’s Enforceable. Brian Hernandez Jr. has the mount and will break from post position three. Nick Zito will saddle Dream Walkin Farms’ Hunt the Front. A maiden winner at Oaklawn, Hunt the Front will be ridden by Corey Lanerie and break from post 11. Trainer Dale Romans will send out graded stakes-placed Attachment Rate. Trained by Brad Cox, Monomoy Girl arrives at the event off an allowance victory on May 16 at Churchill Downs contested at the Ruffian distance of a one-turn mile. Her two-and-three-quarters- length score off a nearly 18-month layoff marked the 5-year-old debut for the chestnut daughter of Tapizar, whose previous start was a one-length victory in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Distaff in November 2018 at Churchill Downs. That Breeders' Cup win secured honors for Champion 3-Year- Old filly thanks to a sophomore campaign that featured five Grade 1 wins including the Ashland at Keeneland, the Longines Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs, the Acorn at Belmont Park and the Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga. She was sent to WinStar Farm in the spring of 2019 after a mild case of colic and suffered an injury to her hamstring last fall when preparing for a potential comeback. The brothers, who work on the security team, bring their passion of horse racing and the spirit of their father with them to each shift at Churchill Downs. “Churchill Downs stands for everything I love,” Ken simply stated. The Hardin’s faces light up every time a new horse racing star enters the stable gate or when they get the opportunity to tell a story about horses that strike up memories of their father. The Stable Gate office is filled with horse racing memorabilia and different photos where all of the employees, not just the Hardins, can share personal stories. One specific photo of Churchill Downs’ all-time leading jockey Pat Day brings back memories of the Hardins’ late father, Charles, every time they enter the office. “I was about 14-years-old when Pat Day won the (1992) Kentucky Derby (aboard Lil E Tee) but I remember it well,” Donnie said. “My dad was taken back by the legendary jockey’s humble demeanor after his big accomplishment.
