‘DON’T DROP THE BALL ON HEALTH’ COMMUNITY GET-TOGETHER SUNDAY 18 TH AUGUST On Sunday 18 th August at exactly 2pm, a crazy idea conceived over several cups of coffee came to fruion. 600 tennis balls were tossed from a helicopter onto a football field, a community was brought together to raise awareness of not dropping the ball on health and in the process, over $60,000 was raised for charity. In excess of 500 people aended the community get- together held at The Holbrook Sporng Complex. There were delicious roast rolls from locally grown and butchered lamb and beef, fairy floss, giant games, lolly jar guessing, netball shoong and football kicking compeons.

The Fight MND Holbrook Big Freeze was certainly a spectacle, with liquid nitrogen adding to the theatrics of those heading down the slide into 1°C water, containing 400kgs of ice. Then the much ancipated helicopter came in from the South West, did a couple of donuts around the oval and dropped every last ball before doing another lap or two and heading off into the distance, leaving the judges to discover the winners. Aer which the aucon kicked off and it did not disappoint, with so many generously donated quality aucon items and keen bidders in the spirit of benefing a worthy cause (or four). The organising commiee have been overwhelmed by the generosity and support received by the Holbrook and District Community and by the amount of money raised for their chosen charies Research4Riney, Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund, Bowel Cancer and FightMND. There are so many people that made this day amazing and it would be impossible to name them all without missing someone. The Holbrook and District community should be extremely proud and give themselves a pat on the back for making this day such a success! From those who donated goods and services, to those who purchased balls and those bidding on aucon items, to those who just turned up on the day and were a part of this stunning community get-together. Ball Drop Prize Winners: First Prize, closest to the pin went to Kate Heijse, 2 nd to Ma Ralph and 3 rd to James Capell. Consolaon prizes going to Tom Davies, Simone Russell, Cathy Jones, Charlie Papworth, Joanne Siedle, Cath Mann, Richard Locke, Richard Jenkyn, Antonia Grunow & Joan Parker.

Children’s Book Week As all parents sigh with relief ll next year’s scramble for Book Week costumes, Library staff are reflecng on a happily busy week. We had a school visit or story me every day last week and we hope that all the children who came to visit enjoyed their experience. Not one of the book week tles, but one of the favourites this week, was The Koala Who Could! This is a story about a lile koala who was too scared to come down out of his tree but when forced to the ground is met with such love that he is no longer scared. The children learnt some new facts about koalas’ secret powers and made a very cute koala hand puppet. The library was also buzzing on Thursday morning with 44 parents, carers and children for a special Book Week story me. Dom read The Sloth Who Came to Stay and showed children the special bird with secret powers and a big shell where children could hear the sound of the sea. The children made a secret power mask.

My experience with target shoong dates back to 1986, when I won my first Australian Title. From there I went on to be part of the 1990 team. Having competed in 7 Commonwealth and 2 Olympic Games, I am sll shoong compevely 35 years later. Target shoong requires concentraon and a steady hand. People of all ages from 12 years to 112 years old can enjoy the sport. There are categories of Paralympic Indoor Shoong for wheelchair shooters and those with a disability. Able bodied shooters compete alongside Paralympic shooters – the aim being that ALL of us are included in the sport. Men and women shoot the same matches, and shooters are graded into secons according to ability – a handicap system, similar to a golf handicap can be applied, to level the playing field. Shoong has taken me around the world, from the World Top: Bruce, Gold Medallist, in 1990 Championships in Moscow, the Commonwealth Games at Auckland Olympic Games in Athens, Le: Victoria Rossiter 16 Yr Aus Air compeng in Cuba, , Rifle Shooter. The youngest shooter Manchester – all very excing at the 2018 Commonwealth Games compeons. I am looking forward to establishing an Indoor Air Range in Holbrook, so that I may pass on my experience to local shooters, and hopefully see some of them aspire to internaonal success. I am currently training towards the 2019 Oceania Shoong Championships, to be held in in November. These championships will decide on Olympic quota places for the Tokyo Olympic Games next year.

It was very cold in the church and with no power or lights to read the service and songs, we all trundled over to the rectory to boil the keles on the gas stove and have a cuppa. We have been blessed and spoiled to have Grant, but now we have to step up and run the Sunday services ourselves. There will be no communion on these weeks and the services will be less formal.

If you can help us out for a couple of hours this year please contact the school ASAP, you will receive free entry to the field days on the day you help out. We have just approved the purchase of 75 lockers to be installed for student use. The school is considering whether we may acquire a locker for each student (400) in the near future. This would be in support of two other iniaves that we are currently considering. Ms Bowen is leading a small team to look at the increasing evidence that mobile phone use in schools is damaging for students, and whether we look at banning them from the classroom. If this is the case, lockers may enable students to lock their phones away during the day. A team at the school is exploring the idea of a restructure to the Billabong High School day, creang me every aernoon for students to parcipate in team, extra-curricular, sporng and interest group acvies in a bid to strengthen physical and mental wellbeing for students. Under choice of a range of acvies they could genuinely engage with each day, from school sports, to choir, yoga, dance, art, agriculture or robocs – just to name a few.
