Pastor’s Notes

WHAT IS PETER'S PENCE? Once per year, on the Sunday closest to the Feast of Ss. Peter & Paul, Catholic parishes take up a collection known as "Peter's Pence." The funds from this collection are used at the discretion of Francis for charitable needs around the globe. The Holy Father receives many requests for spiritual and material support from people in areas devastated by famine, flood and war. This collection helps the Holy Father respond to those urgent appeals. In addition to your donations through cash or checks, if you have foreign currency that you will not be using, you may place it in the basket during the second collection next weekend. St. Mary's will exchange it and include those monies in the funds we forward. Please pray for our Holy Father this week.

TO TEACH WHO CHRIST IS Cardinal George has announced a major campaign for the Archdiocese of Chicago: To Teach Who Christ Is. The donations received from the campaign will enhance Catholic education and faith formation in parishes across Cook and Lake Counties. Each week we will be placing information about the campaign in our bulletin. Our parish will become very active in the campaign in the coming months.

LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR CATHOLIC FAITH Would you like to know more about the basic beliefs we hold as Catholic people?

Join us on Tuesday evenings at 7:00pm in the Upper Grade Center Multi-Purpose Room. The sessions are led by Charles Craigmile, who has led Catholic adult education programs at St. Michael in Old Town and Holy Name Cathedral. The first evening we had sixty-eight people in attendance. Everyone is welcome to join us for any of the sessions. For more information, call Ellyn Von Huben at 847.234.0205.

ON A MISSION On Monday, June 24, twenty-four people from St. Mary's will travel to the town of Jinotepe in Nicaragua. We will spend a week visiting the young people and staff at the Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos home. Many St. Mary's parishioners remember the children from NPH who visited our parish last October and sang at the weekend liturgies. This mission trip is a terrific opportunity to now go and see the young people and the community that is their home. Please keep all who are traveling in your prayers this week.

AWAY FOR THE WEEK Given that I will be in Nicaragua from June 24-July 1, please contact Father Matthew Kowalski if you need the assistance of a priest during that week.

SAVE THE DATES Our annual Mass at the Lake Forest Beach will be on Sunday, July 7 at 6:30am. The Mass at the Lake Bluff Gazebo will be Saturday, July 27 at 6:00pm. Watch for more information next week.

In our Lord,

Father Mike McGovern [email protected]

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Office of the Archbishop Post Office Box 1979 Chicago, Illinois 60690-1979

June 23, 2013

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In a recent meeting with representatives of Caritas Interntionalis, stated, "A Church without charity does not exist."

There are numerous locations around our globe where the Church is challenged daily to be a visible sign of charity. Thankfully for Catholics worldwide, the Holy Father is the pilgrim of charity. In dioceses where many are dependent on the Church for social and pastoral support, as well as regions where Catholics are persecuted for their faith, the Holy Father extends charity to those most in need.

This year's Peter's Pence Collection provides each of us the opportunity to be a pilgrim of charity. Our support of this annual collection will assist Pope Francis in strengthening dioceses, religious orders and struggling communities of faith.

May Our Lord continue to bless you and your loved ones as you share your faith and charity in your parish, the Archdiocese of Chicago and throughout the Universal Church. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours.

Fraternally yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago

A Look Back at the 2012-2013 School Year First Grade Students Experience Metamorphosis First Hand Students in Ms. Kristi Reed’s class were thrilled to share their classroom with two special residents-tadpoles. The tadpoles were the center of the students’ world for the last three months of school. Each child created a “My Frog Journal” where all their daily observations of the tadpole were kept. Every morning the children eagerly entered the classroom and headed directly to the aquarium where they viewed, recorded written observation notes, and drew pictures of the extraordinary physical changes that occurred overnight in their tadpoles. These little creatures amazed the students as they lost their tails, grew legs, began to walk and became “real” frogs. The children’s science unit consisted of studying specific animal classes including mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Students became knowledgeable of the characteristics of each animal class, their habitat, and their daily necessities to survive.

Mathletics High Achievers During the 2012-2013 academic year, 264 students in first through fifth grad utilized the online Mathletics software to complement their math instruction. Our students demonstrated an averge 29% improvement in skills from this program. We are truly proud of all our students as they practice their math skills with young minds all over the world. During the year, they answered 158,486 questions!

Fourth Grade Students Lead Prayer Service The celebration of LOVE was the theme of a Prayer Service led by the 4th grade students. Students from Mrs. Zellet's, Mrs. Spillone's, and Ms. Madsen's classrooms first discussed how they as Catholics, show Love daily to classmates, teachers, coaches, and family members. In addition the students wrote their petitions and made colorful, decorative posters they displayed at the Service.
