It is the third NCAA field hockey title for Maryland and its first since 1993. After a goal by Maryland’s Keli Smith with 10:06 remaining in the first half, a tip-in by teammate Carissa Messimer as time expired in the half turned out to be the game winning goal. The second half saw Michigan’s Jessie Veith score the first and only goal for the Wolverines with 1:04 remaining. Maryland goalkeeper Ashley Hohnstine made a save in the game’s closing seconds to preserve the win. The 18 shots by both teams ties the record for the fewest shots in a cham- pionship match. • Field Hockey DIVISION I
Field Hockey DIVISION I Highlights UConn defeats Duke 2-0 for third national championship: UConn defeated Duke by a score of 2-0 to earn the program’s third national championship November 24 at Old Dominion. The Huskies cap their season on the highest possible note with a record of 21-4, while Duke finishes its season at 17-7. Duke earned the game’s early corner attempts, but Sarah Mansfield denied three shots off the corners. The Husky defense played relent- lessly to keep the game scoreless. UConn used two first-half goals to open up a 2-0 lead against the Blue Devils, with both goals resulting from penalty corners. The Huskies capitalized on their second corner of the afternoon to record their first tally. Roisin Upton launched a shot that Duke keeper Lauren Blazing turned aside, but the rebound squirted to an open Chloe Hunnable in front of the cage. She popped in her 23rd goal of the season to break onto the scoreboard at 23:05. UConn struck again with 5:36 remaining in the first half. Anne Jeute took another UConn corner as time wound down before the intermis- sion. Hunnable received the ball on the corner and ripped a hard, low shot to the lower right corner of the goal. Mckenzie Townsend posi- tioned herself perfectly in front of the goal with her stick on the turf to redirect the shot up and over Blazing for a 2-0 UConn lead. UConn nearly increased its lead in the second half, as Hunnable continued her hot play on the offensive end.

DIVISION I FIELD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2015 Championship 2 History 4 All-Time Results 10 Brackets 14 2015 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS Record-setting day as Cuse wins national title: Individual awards and a giant, gleaming team trophy sat undisturbed on a table at the center of Ocker Field Sunday afternoon. The public address announcer twice tried to begin the post-game coronation of Syracuse as 2015 NCAA field hockey national champions, but the Orange players were still near the stands – each wearing white National Champions hats and T-shirts – hugging family and friends that had traveled to see the program win its first title. After awards were finally distributed, and while the on-field celebration continued, senior goalkeeper Jess Jecko pointed to the team trophy sitting between her and coach Ange Bradley at a post-game press conference. That trophy, she said, was all the impetus Syracuse needed to muster the effort it needed to beat North Carolina, 4-2, in the title game. “It’s the last game of the season and you have to put everything out there, or you can fall short,” Jecko said. Zoe Wilson, a freshman midfielder from Atrim, Ireland, was the unlikely hero. She scored her first career goal on a corner with 11:21 left to play, breaking a 2-2 tie after North Carolina had rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit. The Orange (21-1), who scored four goals on five shots, added an empty-net goal in the final minutes. “I’m numb. I’ve been chasing this dream for 25 years,” said Bradley, who is in her 19th season as head coach at Syracuse.
