Let’s explore how this month‘s art relates to some of these subjects. What is the Harlem Renaissance? From the 1910’s - the 1930’s the northern Manhattan neighborhood of Harlem was booming with creativity. From fashion to food, music to dance, literature to art... amazing things were happening around every corner. This map illustrates the concentration of jazz clubs, restau- rants, and theaters in Harlem. As we spend this week connecting Faith Ringgold’s art to these other subjects, we’ll use her book, Harlem Renaissance Party, as our guide. Faith Ringgold’s book, Harlem Renaissance Party, takes us on a tour of the rich literary, culinary, musical, and theatrical scene in Harlem during the 1930’s. The interview took place at Wilson's home in Valatie, New York, and was conducted by Jonathan Katz for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Photo by Grace Matthews. In 1967, a year of widespread race riots in America, Faith Ringgold painted a 12-foot-long canvas called American People Series #20: Die. The work shows a tumult of figures, both black and white, wielding weapons and spattered with blood. It was a watershed year for Ringgold, who, after struggling for a decade against the marginalization she faced as a black female artist, unveiled the monumental piece in her first solo exhibition at New York’s Spectrum Gallery. Earlier this year, several months after Ringgold turned 85, the painting was purchased by the Museum of Modern Art, cementing her legacy as a pioneering artist and activist whose work remains searingly relevant. Where did she come from? Ringgold was born in Harlem in 1930. Her family included educators and creatives, and she grew up surrounded by the Harlem Renaissance. The street where she was raised was also home to influential activists, writers, and artists of the era—Thurgood Marshall, W.E.B. Article Dear Sister Artist: Activating Feminist Art Letters and Ephemera in the Archive Kathy Carbone ABSTRACT The 1970s Feminist Art movement continues to serve as fertile ground for contemporary feminist inquiry, knowledge sharing, and art practice. The CalArts Feminist Art Program (1971–1975) played an influential role in this movement and today, traces of the Feminist Art Program reside in the CalArts Institute Archives’ Feminist Art Materials Collection. Through a series of short interrelated archives stories, this paper explores some of the ways in which women responded to and engaged the Collection, especially a series of letters, for feminist projects at CalArts and the Women’s Art Library at Goldsmiths, University of London over the period of one year (2017–2018). The paper contemplates the archive as a conduit and locus for current day feminist identifications, meaning- making, exchange, and resistance and argues that activating and sharing—caring for—the archive’s feminist art histories is a crucial thing to be done: it is feminism-in-action that not only keeps this work on the table but it can also give strength and definition to being a feminist and an artist. Over the past year, the exhibition, A Stitch Between, has developed into a meditation on relationships with the self and others. This project includes a series of three portraits and a grouping of felt objects. These were created through a variety of processes, including printing, drawing, painting, and sewing. This formal combination mirrors the complexity of relationships surrounding sexuality and reproductive health that is the undercurrent of the work. Yes X No ___ ARTIST’S STATEMENT “Women’s deeds and work need to be a part of permanent history.” Judy Chicago ARTIST’S BIOGRAPHY Judy Chicago is well known for the convention-shattering nature of her work in such monumental, collaborative pro- jects as The Dinner Party, Birth Project, Holocaust Project and Resolutions: A Stitch in Time. As an artist, author, feminist, educator and intellectual whose career now spans more than four decades, she has been a leader and model for an artist’s right to express freely his or her core identity, for a definition of fine art that encompasses craft tech- niques, and for the necessity of an art that seeks to effect social change. Chicago has explored an unusually wide range of media over the course of her career: painting, drawing, printmaking, china-painting, ceramics, tapestry, needlework, and most recently glass. Her fluency with diverse media, her commitment to creating content-based art in the service of social change and her interest in collaboration have led to her being included in the art historical canon—most re- cently in Janson’s Basic History of Western Art. CONTEXTUAL INFORMATION For Chicago, The Birth Project reveals “a primordial female self hidden among the recesses of my soul…. The birth- ing woman, as in The Crowning, is a part of the dawn of creation.” Chicago states, “Traditionally, men make art and women have babies,” so “the Birth Project is an act of solidarity, both with those women who had to choose, and with those who refused to choose.” MEDIA DESCRIPTION The media used in the Birth Project as a whole include fabrics of cotton and silk, needlepoint yarns, threads, and the associated mesh canvases, paint, quilted panels, appliqué, and various other materials usually thought of as women's craft materials, not the materials of “high” art. -

Biography and CV BIOGRAPHY Born July 20, 1939 – Chicago, IL Judy Chicago is an artist, author, feminist, educator, and intellectual whose career now spans five decades. Her influence both within and beyond the art community is attested to by her inclusion in hundreds of publications throughout the world. Her art has been frequently exhibited in the United States as well as in Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. In addition, a number of the books she has authored have been published in foreign editions, bringing her art and philosophy to readers worldwide. In the early seventies after a decade of professional art practice, Chicago pioneered Feminist art and art education through a unique program for women at California State University, Fresno, a pedagogical approach that she has continued to develop over the years. In 1974, Chicago turned her attention to the subject of women's history to create her most well-known work, The Dinner Party, which was executed between 1974 and 1979 with the participation of hundreds of volunteers. This monumental multimedia project, a symbolic history of women in Western Civilization, has been seen by more than one million viewers during its sixteen exhibitions held at venues spanning six countries. The Dinner Party has been the subject of countless articles and art history texts and is included in innumerable publications in diverse fields. The impact of The Dinner Party was examined in the 1996 exhibition, Sexual Politics: Judy Chicago's Dinner Party in Feminist Art History. Curated by Dr. Amelia Jones at the UCLA Armand Hammer Museum, this show was accompanied by an extensive catalog published by the University of California Press. -

Women of Color As Artists
Curriculum Units by Fellows of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute 1996 Volume III: Race and Representation in American Cinema Women of Color as Artists Curriculum Unit 96.03.09 by Val-Jean Belton The New Haven public school system is a melting pot of many different cultures. The Fair Haven Middle school where I am one of two art teachers, is culturally very diverse. The student body is 65% Hispanic, 25% African American, and 10% White or other. I have observed that these students have little appreciation for visual arts. By offering lessons that center on various themes that are associated with their cultural heritage, I am able to gain and retain their attention. My lessons are taught in this particular manner in the hope that my students might better understand each others’ cultural heritage through hands-on experience in art. Despite my efforts to develop and teach art lessons that are not only culturally enriching but offer hands-on experience, I have had a tendency not to include information about the vast number of women artists. I have especially failed to include African American and Hispanic women artists who have contributed to our cultural experience. Although women artists have made major contributions to the art world, the extent of their accomplishments have been overshadowed by male artists such as Pablo Picasso, Jacob Lawrence, and Henri Matisse. There is little information available concerning women artists of African American and Hispanic descents available in our art curriculum, so they have not been included in the visual art classes that I teach. -
Feminist Artists' Book Projects of the 1980-90S
1 Bookworks as Networks: Feminist Artists’ Book Projects of the 1980-90s Caroline Fazzini Recent trends in contemporary exhibition, academic, and artistic practices in the U.S. illuminate a persistent concentration of efforts to present more complete versions of the past, specifically regarding issues of diversity and representation. Some museums and art historians have responded to the call for inclusivity by supporting exhibitions that focus on artists who have been marginalized. We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women, 1965-1985, and Radical Women: Latin American Art, 1960-1985, which opened in 2017 at the Brooklyn Museum and the Hammer Museum, respectively, exemplify this corresponding surge of interest within the art and academic worlds of the Americas regarding women artists, and particularly women artists of color. My studies of these exhibitions, as well as my interest in artists’ books, led me to identify two collaborative artists’ book projects that emerged in the late 1980s, in the immediate aftermath of the time periods addressed in both We Wanted a Revolution and Radical Women. I aim to contribute to revisionist scholarly efforts by examining these two projects: Coast to Coast: A Women of Color National Artists’ Book Project (1987-1990) and Connections project/Conexus (1986-1989). Both were first and foremost, meant to initiate dialogues and relationships between women across borders through the making of art and artists’ books. While neither project has received scholarly attention to date, they are important examples of feminist collaborations between women artists. The projects, Connections project/Conexus (1986-1989), organized by Josely Carvalho and Sabra Moore, and Coast to Coast: A Women of Color National Artists’ Book Project (1987- 90), organized by Faith Ringgold and Clarissa Sligh, both took advantage of the accessibility of 2 artists’ books in an effort to include and encourage the participation of women artists.
