Advocating for a healthy Midtown business community reetings, Midtown! As I think of Gwords to write, the first thing that comes to mind is how proud I am to be a part of this community and organization. Our Midtown community continues to grow by leaps and bounds, thanks to the local businesses, neigh- borhoods and civic partners who have made it possible. One word I would use to describe Midtown – connected. Through the collaboration efforts and outcomes that have come to fruition, Midtown is the heart that connects the Downtown and West Omaha corri- dor and now more so than ever, the destination. Thank you to the board members I have the pleasure of serving with and to the MBA membership. There is such passion in the Midtown business community. Please check out our new website, www.MidtownBusinessAssociation. org, where you can find upcoming MBA events and happenings. We offer an array of opportunities such as luncheons with insightful speakers, networking with fellow businesses, Neighborhood Improvement Awards, Façade Improvement Grants, Commu- nity Sponsorships and Entrepreneurial Scholarship Awards. Make Midtown your destination!

t might seem weird to think that a plate of food (or a cup Iof ice cream) could define a neighborhood. But when it comes to Midtown Omaha’s lineup of diverse but food-loving neighborhoods, it’s not that hard. I’m bringing you a list of a dozen dishes in six Omaha neighborhoods that I chose for a simple reason: When I think of food in these areas of town, these are the first dishes I think of (and the ones I’ve eaten again and again).

BLACKSTONE DISTRICT Coneflower Creamery’s Blackstone butter brickle ice cream If the small ice cream shop’s flavor named after the neighborhood weren’t enough, this ice cream also happens to be delicious, studded with housemade chocolate- covered toffee bits.

Nite Owl’s totchos Tater tots took over Omaha at the same time Nite Owl opened in Blackstone, and its giant tray of super crisp tots covered with queso, green salsa, queso fresco, crema, red onion and cilantro became an instant classic.

DUNDEE Pitch’s Shrooms pizza Truffle oil plays a big role on this pie, which remains one of my favorites to this day. The rest of the toppings include thyme cream, mozzarella, wild mushrooms, oven- roasted tomatoes, Parmesan and fresh parsley.

Marks’ macaroni and cheese Creamy, savory goodness is one way to describe Marks’ gooey mac and cheese, which has neighborhood classic status for sure. Get a couple of the rotating add-ins or don’t; either way, this dish never disappoints. THE WORLD-HERALD

MIDTOWN CROSSING Modern Love’s Modern cheeseburger We called it the best meatless burger in Omaha, and it’s a designation I stand by. The Modern cheeseburger, made with a meatless patty and all the fixings, is a vegan delight. If you haven’t tried it, I don’t know what you’re waiting for.

The Grey Plume’s charcuterie The neighborhood has one of the best vegan spots in town next to one of the best places to find a thoughtful, well-curated plate of meat. If it’s charcuterie you seek, the Plume is one of the best spots in the city to find it.

LEAVENWORTH STREET La Casa pizza Love it or hate it (personally, I love it) it’s hard not to see La Casa’s singular pizza as a classic. My personal favorite: hamburger, mushroom and onion on a big rectangle pie.

I moved to Omaha in 2014 and have watched how Midtown has transformed into an increasingly vibrant destination for people of all ages. That same transformative spirit has taken place at UNMC, thanks in large part to Omaha’s leaders and generous philanthropic community who have chosen to invest in ways that strengthen our community and impact future generations.

What has been the most pleas- ant surprise in recent years? A. It has been rewarding to see this historic part of our city thriving in recent years, thanks to the commitment of the individuals and businesses that call Midtown Omaha home. We’ve been fortunate to come alongside our neighbors and participate in efforts like Des- tination Midtown and Midtown Crossing. The end result has surpassed our highest hopes, sparking investment and making Midtown Omaha a destination for people from all parts of our city.

SECURITY NATIONAL BANK Dustin Walters, first vice president, Business Banking

Q. As a longstanding resident of Midtown Omaha, you’ve seen the area evolve and prosper. What has been the most pleas- ant surprise in recent years? A. Security National Bank has been a part of Midtown Omaha since our first shareholder meeting at the Blackstone Hotel in 1964. Our branch at 35th and Farnam Streets has evolved as the area has made a resurgence, too. The growth of all businesses in the area has been exciting for us. While there are many residents and businesses that have been our neighbors since the beginning, we also enjoy a great variety of new ones.

Q. By 2025, how do you envision Midtown Omaha? A. As the area has evolved to a dynamic district with so many diverse businesses, it also continues to draw families who enjoy the charm of the tree-lined streets. There is some- thing for everyone. Q. As longstanding residents of Midtown Omaha, you’ve seen the area evolve and prosper. What has been the most pleas- ant surprise in recent years? A.
