Starring Gael Garcia Bernal (Rosewater), Saffron Burrows (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Hannah Dunne (Frances Ha), Lola Kirke (Gone Girl), and Peter Vack (I Just Want My Pants Back), Mozart in the Jungle draws back the curtain at the New York Symphony, where artistic dedication and creativity collide with mind games, politicking and survival instincts. The series guest stars include Malcolm McDowell (The Mentalist) and Bernadette Peters (Smash), and is Executive Produced by Roman Coppola (Moonrise Kingdom), Jason Schwartzman (The Darjeeling Limited), Paul Weitz (About a Boy), and John Strauss (There’s Something About Mary). Based on the critically acclaimed memoir Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs & Classical Music by Blair Tindall, Mozart in the Jungle is seen through the eyes of a young oboist, Hailey (Kirke), who tries to navigate through the egos and eccentricities of a world renowned orchestra, and new conductor Rodrigo (Bernal), an enfant terrible whose passion for music threatens the plans of the orchestra’s old guard. That old guard is represented by Thomas (McDowell), the reluctantly outgoing conductor, and Gloria (Peters), the chairwoman of the board, who wonder what they have wrought by bringing Rodrigo into the fold. The musicians themselves, a colourful family of disparate personalities, are struggling to deal with this new regime. Along with her friends Alex (played by Vack), a dancer on the brink of success, Cynthia (Burrows), a worldly cellist, and Lizzie (played by Dunne), a world class partier, Hailey searches for what it means to dedicate your life to music. Jason Schwartzman: We’re joined by so many more guest stars and luminaries from the classical music world: Gustavo Dudamel, Joshua Bell, Lang Lang and Emanuel Ax. Paul Weitz: Basically people in the classical music world saw Season 1 and it’s kind of a guilty pleasure for them but we started to get incoming calls from people who wanted to be on the show. Schwartzman: We also have Dermot Mulroney and Gretchen Mol. The cast feels like there’s a lot more going on, more epic in that way. Why does the show appeal to non-classical fans? Weitz: It’s a show about a large, dysfunctional family and two outsiders who are entering the family. And now as we enter Season 2, she’s questioning what she wants out of this. Does she want to be an instrument of orchestra or does she want to one day have a solo career. She’s reinventing herself in a positive way. And Gael Garcia Bernal’s character, Rodrigo, is the other character. He’s a superstar, but he’s fairly isolated.

There is a threadbare, braided rug on the floor. There is a long, wide corridor decorated with faded paintings of sailboats and battleships. The wallpapers are sun-bleached and peeling at the corners except for a few newly-hung strips which are clean and bright. A small easel sits stored in the corner. Outside, a hard rain falls, drumming the roof and rattling the gutters. A ten-year-old boy in pajamas comes up the steps carefully eating a bowl of cereal as he walks. He is Lionel. Lionel slides open the door to a low cabinet under the window. He takes out a portable record player, puts a disc on the turntable, and sets the needle into the spinning groove. A child’s voice says over the speaker: RECORD PLAYER (V.O.) In order to show you how a big symphony orchestra is put together, Benjamin Britten has written a big piece of music, which is made up of smaller pieces that show you all the separate parts of the orchestra. As Lionel listens, three other children wander out of their bedrooms and down to the landing. The first is an eight-year-old boy in a bathrobe. He is Murray. The second is a nine-year-old boy in white boxer shorts and a white undershirt. He is Rudy. The third is a twelve-year-old girl in a cardigan sweater with knee-high socks and brightly polished, patent-leather shoes.
