Professor of Practical Studies iii THE DOCTOR OF MINISTRY THESIS PROJECT ABSTRACT Herbert K. Smith Liberty University School of Divinity, 2020 Mentor: Dr. Donald Q. Hicks The researcher was called to pastoral ministry at age fifty. Five decades of life outside ministry lends a unique perspective. The trappings of ministry were not unknown to the researcher, but living out a called ministry, combined with the determination and stamina needed for successful execution, was an unforeseen challenge. Senior pastors of evangelical churches lead busy lives personally and professionally. The pace of life in current culture, secular and religious, impede pastors from observing the greatest commandment with full effort (“all”) as Jesus directs every Christian to do. Obedience to the commandment is directed by Jesus as to employ the heart, soul, strength (or might), and mind (Matt 22:36-38, Mark 12:30-31, Luke 10:25-38).1 The whole of human existence is to be utilized in keeping the commandment. Accordingly, the four areas of heart, soul, strength, and mind are to be used as conduits of love toward God. These areas of our being drive us emotionally (heart), spiritually (soul), physically (strength), and intellectually (mind). A research of the health of evangelical pastors in these four areas is being conducted and reported here. Data from scholarly writings, media, experience, and scripture; each researched to render findings, address the problems, and identify practical, proven strategies and applications. An IRB approved long term question/response survey for further research was launched March 1, 2020. Word Count: 250 Key Words: Greatest Commandment, Pastors, Obedience, Heart, Soul, Strength, Mind, Love 1 (Matt 22:36-38, Mark 12:30-31, and Luke 10:25-38), New American Standard Bible (NASB). Unless otherwise noted, all scripture references in this thesis project will be from the New American Standard Bible. iv Acknowledgments This research and findings are dedicated to several individuals and institutions which have encouraged, enlightened, and enriched the life journey shared. Scripture paints believers as heirs of the benefits provided by others. God reminded the Israelites they had received “. a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant— then when you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget the Lord 6:10b-12a NIV).     EXHIBITION CATALOGUE MESSAGE FROM OUR CO-CHAIRS In 2019 we are celebrating 10 years of the Schools Reconciliation Challenge (SRC)! For 10 years Reconciliation NSW has been engaging young people and schools in reconciliation. Our theme this year, Speaking and Listening from the Heart has inspired primary and high school students from across NSW and the ACT to create reconciliation-inspired art and writing for the SRC. We continue to be inspired by the contribution these young people, from many different backgrounds, make to reconciliation with their talent and insight. We thank each and every school, teacher, principal, parent and student who has taken part, guided and supported students and each other. It is thanks to their dedication that the SRC continues to grow each year. We are grateful for their hard work and commitment in ensuring that schools are key contributors to reconciliation processes. In 2019 we received 415 art and writing entries from students across NSW and the ACT, each reflecting the theme and their perspectives on Australia’s ongoing reconciliation journey. It is a privilege to see the depth of engagement, insight and commitment to reconciliation in action that students demonstrate ACKNOWLEDGMENT through their art and writing entries. OF COUNTRY The quality of the art and writing entries we received made the selection process for the exhibition Reconciliation NSW hard work. Many of the artworks were developed acknowledges the collaboratively, involving classes or groups of students traditional owners of under the guidance of local Aboriginal artists, parents Country throughout and community members. October/November 2009 PUBLISHER’S MEMO Story-telling and the Gospel throughout Our World By Lon Allison I recently read an excerpt from Henri Nouwen in his book the Living Reminder: Service and Praying in Memory of Jesus Christ.1 He says, “The rabbis guide their people with stories; ministers usually guide with ideas and theories. We need to become storytellers again.” I concur. In this issue of Lausanne World Pulse we give attention to what is now termed in mission circles as the “Orality Project.” I thoroughly enjoyed the article by Carla Bowman titled, “The Storytellers of Dulumpur.” It is in fact about Dulumpur, Vietnam, Kenya, Ethiopia, Chad, and Mauritania. Through storytelling primarily utilizing the narratives of scripture, ministers of the gospel are seeing marvelous responses from people in cities and villages around the world. I only wish Carla would have spoken of the value of storytelling preaching in London, Sydney, Chicago, and Vancouver as well. Perhaps that is more the responsibility of someone like me. The masters-level course I teach at Wheaton College on preaching combines instruction on the theology of the gospel, and how to speak it in the West and in the Majority World. I believe story is the best container for the gospel for all listeners, everywhere in the world. But a caution: story proclamation is not easy. It is an art form in itself.

Lectionary-based: The weekly lessons connect the Revised Common Lectionary for worship with Community of Christ identity, mission, message, and beliefs. Quick, easy: The lessons are designed for approximately 45-minute class sessions with two to three pages of ideas, discussion starters, and activities. Additional preparation help may be found in Sermon & Class Helps, Year B: New Testament (with focus on the gospel according to Mark) and Sermon & Class Helps, Year B: Old Testament (semicontinuous readings). Lessons are available for three age groups.
