Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports Volume 6, Issue 1 2010 Article 1 Scoring and Shooting Abilities of NBA Players James Piette, University of Pennsylvania Sathyanarayan Anand, University of Pennsylvania Kai Zhang, University of Pennsylvania Recommended Citation: Piette, James; Anand, Sathyanarayan; and Zhang, Kai (2010) "Scoring and Shooting Abilities of NBA Players," Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports: Vol. 6: Iss. 1, Article 1. Available at: http://www.bepress.com/jqas/vol6/iss1/1 DOI: 10.2202/1559-0410.1194 ©2010 American Statistical Association. All rights reserved. Scoring and Shooting Abilities of NBA Players James Piette, Sathyanarayan Anand, and Kai Zhang Abstract We propose two new measures for evaluating offensive ability of NBA players, using one- dimensional shooting data from three seasons beginning with the 2004-05 season. These measures improve upon currently employed shooting statistics by accounting for the varying shooting patterns of players over different distances from the basket. This variance also provides us with an intuitive metric for clustering players, wherein performance of players is calculated and compared to his cluster center as a baseline. To further improve the accuracy of our measures, we develop our own variation of smoothing and shrinkage, reducing any small sample biases and abnormalities. The first measure, SCAB or, Scoring Ability Above Baseline, measures a player's ability to score as a function of time on court. The second metric, SHTAB or Shooting Ability, calculates a player's propensity to score on a per-shot basis. Our results show that a combination of SCAB and SHTAB can be used to separate out players based on their offensive game.

NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release December 18, 2020 JAMAAL MAGLOIRE FOUNDATION AND LONGO’S TEAM UP TO FEED 270 FAMILIES FOR THE HOLIDAYS TORONTO - Toronto Raptors Assistant Coach and Community Ambassador Jamaal ‘Big Kat’ Magloire and TSN sportscaster Jack Armstrong hosted ‘Above The Rim’ on December 16, an exclusive virtual fundraising event benefitting the Jamaal Magloire Foundation. More than 150 attendees tuned in to hang out with the Big Kat and his surprise guests including Raptors starters Fred VanVleet and OG Anunoby, as well as Raekwon The Chef, Maestro Fresh Wes and Brandan Duke The DJ. This new holiday initiative was an opportunity for attendees to connect directly with celebrated Toronto Raptors stars, legendary rap/hip hop artists and musicians, all while giving back to the GTA community. More importantly, all event ticket donations were matched by Longo’s to provide food for families-in-need this holiday season. “Basketball is my job, but philanthropy is my life,” said Magloire. “We are so grateful to our presenting sponsor Longo’s helping us double our impact in providing for 270 families, far exceeding our initial goal of 200. This outpouring of support has blown me away.” The Scarborough native has always been about supporting the community, and his dedication to helping others is clearly influencing this young group of NBA players. “My goal for 2021 personally is to do more in the community, be more involved,” Anunoby told viewers at the event. “Above the Rim is a start, but I want to do even more.” Fred VanVleet joined the show along with daughter Sanaa, and emphasized the importance of being a good role model.

  • On Decemeber 2Nd, Lebron James Returned to Cleveland to Play His Old Team, the Cavaliers for the First Time Since Leaving Them for the Miami Heat
Welcome Back to Cleveland Lebron! On Decemeber 2nd, Lebron James returned to Cleveland to play his old team, the Cavaliers for the first time since leaving them for the Miami Heat. Lebron left Cleveland for Miami to join his friends Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade in hopes of winning the NBA title that has eluded him in Cleveland. There was speculation that the Heat would surpass the all time best NBA regular season record of 72 wins and 10 losses by the 1996 Bulls. Lebron’s Miami Heat stumbled into their game against Cleveland with an 11 – 8 record, while Cleveland had a 7 – 10 record. Lebron received roaring boos and negative chants from the Cavalier fans in attendance. What does the future hold for Lebron and the Heat? Will the three super stars win an NBA championship? Or will they even make it to the playoffs? _______________________________________________________________________________________ 1. In order to still beat the Bull’s record 72 wins in a single season record, what will the Heat’s record need to be for the remainder of the season (there are 82 games in a NBA season)? 2. Find the winning percentage of the 1996 Bulls as well as the Miami Heat’s current record. Write a sentence or two comparing the two percentages. Which would you say is/was the better team? 3. The Miami Heat 2010 - 2011 season payroll is below. The team carries 15 players, but there are 18 players owed money that were on the roster at one point this season. What percent of the team’s payroll is devoted to Miami’s big three (James, Bosh, Wade)? PLAYER 2010 – 2011 SALARY LeBron James $14,500,000 Chris Bosh $14,500,000 Dwyane Wade $14,000,000 Mike Miller $5,000,000 Udonis Haslem $3,500,000 Joel Anthony $3,300,000 Eddie House $1,352,181 Zydrunas Ilgauskas $1,352,181 Juwan Howard $1,352,181 Jamaal Magloire $1,229,255 Carlos Arroyo $1,223,166 James Jones $1,069,509 Mario Chalmers $847,000 Dexter Pittman $473,604 Patrick Beverley $473,604 Da'Sean Butler $473,604 Kenny Hasbrouck $250,000 Shavlik Randolph $250,000 Jerry Stackhouse $210,339 TOTALS: $65,356,624 4.
