  • Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No
For Exhibitors October 12, 2020 Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No. 138 Newsletter and Cinema Advertising Sparked by this year’s renewed interest in independent distributors and genre films, we celebrate the creativity of American International Pictures, the pioneer of mass-production, low-budget film making. AIP was founded in 1954 as American Releasing Corporation (ARC) by Samuel Arkoff, an entertainment lawyer, and James Nicholson, a former sales manager for Realart Pictures. They soon expanded into production so they could take full control of their product, both creatively and financially. AIP developed a checklist of creative elements to ensure a film’s appeal to their target youth audience, largely overlooked by studios of the day. Their ARKOFF formula, named after the founder, included these elements: Action, Revolution, Killing, Oratory, Fantasy and Fornication. AIP would frequently bundle multiple pictures to play as double features at the nearly 4000 drive-ins (Click to Play) operating in the US in the 50’s and 60’s. One of AIP’s famously prolific and successful directors, was Roger Corman, "The Pope of Pop Cinema", who established a cult following for himself and AIP through his adaptions of Edgar Allen Poe tales as horror films. Famously, AIP’s new project development began by creating the film’s title and movie poster, which was then market-tested to confirm interest before the screenwriter, director and cast were hired. Today’s independent producers have many lessons they can learn from the film entrepreneurs

Chapter 6 Of Wars and Rumors of Wars: Extra-factual Information and (In)Advertent Escalation Kelly M. Greenhill People who understand how crises escalate . [know] it is absolutely alarming that the president uses [Twitter] . [and that] perhaps we would stumble into a nuclear confl ict with North Korea. He’s got one fi nger on Twitter, one fi nger on the nuclear weapon. I think most Americans walk around in the ignorant but secure belief that somehow there’s a considered way to launch a nuclear weapon. And that’s not the case. [Trump] has immediate access to this awesome destructive power and he loves to emote reckless bravado, and it makes this scenario that much more likely. —Former CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson on US President Donald J. Trump, Newsweek, August 24, 2017 President Donald Trump’s declarations on Twitter that North Korea could face “fi re and fury the likes of which the world has never seen” and that “if Iran wants to fi ght, that will be the offi cial end of Iran” have been widely interpreted as threats backed by the uniquely destruc- tive power of the US nuclear arsenal.1 But what should one make of these very public and singularly apocalyptic escalatory threats? Are they part of a visionary, if unconventional, bargaining strategy destined to generate unprecedented payoffs, or a dangerous, even potentially catastrophic, folly that could catalyze a costly war or wars neither side really wants? • We Understand That the U.S. Department of Labor Announced a Proposed Rule That Would “Update and Clarify” the Department of Labor’S Investment Duties Regulation
July 26, 2020 Office of Regulations and Interpretations Employee Benefits Security Administration, Room N-5655, U.S. Department of Labor 200 Constitution Avenue NW Washington, DC 20210 Attention: Financial Factors in Selecting Plan Investments Proposed Regulation. Document Citation: 85 FR 39113 Page: 39113-39128 (16 pages) CFR: 29 CFR 2550 RIN: 1210-AB95 Document Number: 2020-13705 Dear Sir/Madam: We understand that the U.S. Department of Labor announced a proposed rule that would “update and clarify” the Department of Labor’s investment duties regulation. According to the news release issued announcing this proposed rule, “Private employer-sponsored retirement plans are not vehicles for furthering social goals or policy objectives that are not in the financial interest of the plan,” said Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia. “Rather, ERISA plans should be managed with unwavering focus on a single, very important social goal: providing for the retirement security of American workers.” We are writing to provide comments on this proposed rule. Background The core idea behind the work of William Michael Cunningham at Creative Investment Research is the recognition that mainstream market-based solutions do not maximize social return. This leads to an underappreciation for the value of human life. We develop market-based innovations to counter this. The elevation of “Chicago-school” economic theories has led to a focus on celebrity and money worship. These magnify and worsen the misallocation of economic resources identified above. Our development of social return investment technologies and the subsequent rise of social entrepreneurs are the methods we have used in this effort. We have radically augmented the development of new investment theories that are the key, we believe, to a higher level of human development.

Arnold to The Political Science Department in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Honors in Political Science Trinity College Hartford, CT April 19, 2021 Serena Laws Stefanie Chambers Thesis Advisor Department Chair Arnold ii Abstract Donald Trump came roaring onto the political stage when he announced his presidential candidacy in 2015. In the years that followed, he amassed a loyal following of motivated voters. During the Trump era, his followers have developed a reputation for loud bigotry, shameless xenophobia, and unmasked white supremacy. The movement has to come to strongly resemble the nativist populism that, until Trump, was generally confined to Europe. In order to better understand the motivation of Trump voters and their intense dedication to the 45th president, I surveyed 82 voters from the Midwest about their feelings towards politicians, policies, and political opponents. The Midwestern Swing District Voter Survey offers both qualitative and quantitative responses and suggests that Trumpism has redefined identity politics for Trump and Biden voters alike.

  • The Donald, FLOTUS, and the Gendered Labors of Celebrity Politics at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Review essays The Donald, FLOTUS, and the Gendered Labors of Celebrity Politics at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Michael Wolff, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House (New York: Picador, 2018), 327 pp. Omarosa Manigault Newman, Unhinged: An Insider’s Account of the Trump White House (New York: Gallery Books, 2018), 334 pp. Mary Jordan, The Art of Her Deal: The Untold Story of Melania Trump (New York: Simon and Schuster, 2020), 341 pp. Michelle Obama, Becoming (New York: Penguin, 2018), 426 pp. When I started thinking about this review essay, I wondered how to ap- proach the political culture of the United States, its celebrity spectacles, and the cultures of affect related to it. But I am not alone in my puzzlement, it seems. In his introduction to Trump’s America, Liam Kennedy evokes the sense of dislocation, overstimulation, and collective trauma related to the present, and the “deceptions […] endorsed as an alternative reality” by Trump himself (1-2). Carlos Lozada, a book critic and a self-professed citizen reader (7), seeks to find out “how we thought here” (1). Considering the mind warp of “alternative facts,” Elena Matala de Mazza reminds us that the deployment of what Mi- chel de Montaigne called “fictions légitimes” (qtd. in Mattala de Mazza 121-22) are longstanding technologies of governance and served the potentates’ legiti- mate agendas of conserving power and trust. Both Donald Trump and Barack Obama run on a kind of celebrity politics that capitalizes on “style” and “sym- bolism,” features frequently overlooked in political communication (Street 370). Obama advocates for change through a string of memoirs, with the most recent 750-page tome A Promised Land published as part one (!) of his legacy-building machine.

  • A Terrible Statement Unless He Gets Away with It”
1 “A Terrible Statement Unless He Gets Away with It” Chaos and conformity have caused an epistemic crisis In the public square of Athens, a homely, snub- nosed, bulgy- eyed old man encounters a homely, snub- nosed, bulgy- eyed young man. Hailing the young man and remarking on their resemblance, Socra- tes begins a conversation with Theaetetus and sets out to determine whether they also resemble each other in their love of philosophy. Theaetetus protests that he is no great intellect; philosophical puzzles make him quite dizzy, “wondering whatever they can mean.” Ah! Then you are a philosopher: “This sense of wonder is the mark of the philosopher,” insists Socrates. “Philosophy indeed has no other origin.” With that, in a conversation imagined by Plato 2,400 or so years ago, the old man commences to lead his new friend on an expedition into the densest thickets of epistemology. What is knowledge? What is error? How does error arise? Why is error even possible? Each question would seem to have an obvious answer, yet each obvious answer collapses upon examination. 1 Rauch_Constitution of Knowledge_a,b_i-x_1-305.indd 1 4/7/21 9:38 AM 2 the constitution of knowledge Perhaps knowledge is correct perception of the world? But percep- tion varies between individuals; it varies, too, within individuals. A wine which tastes sweet when I am well may taste bitter the next day, when I am ill. There are dreams and hallucinations, all imaginary yet seeming real. Each of us is a parade of changing perceptions, but our shifting personal palimpsest can never be the same as knowledge, as reality.

In the United States, allegations of sexual assault and har- assment spawned the deposition or resignation of prominent figures in the entertainment, media, dining, and business industries following the onset of the #MeToo social media movement.' In the rest of the world, many people also embraced the online crusade by sharing the hashtag millions of times or creating their own versions of it. Femi- nists and scholars have since attempted to keep pace with the se- quence of incidents, grasp the reasoning for the present occurrence of such a reckoning with issues surrounding gender-based violence at this point in time, and envisage more inclusive processes for all wo- men. Contrary to the widespread discussion that mostly focuses on domestic issues, this Article offers an international perspective on the challenges raised by #MeToo by surveying a sample of countries that * Professor of Law & Associate Dean for Faculty Scholarship, Golden Gate University School of Law, J.S.D., Stanford Law School, L.L.M., London School of Economics, M.S.
