Gopal Baglay's Message on the occasion of 72nd Republic Day of India I extend warm greetings to the friendly people of Sri Lanka and all Indians residing in this beautiful country on the occasion of the 72nd Republic Day of India. It was on 26 January 1950 that the world’s largest written Constitution entered into force into a newly independent India and transformed the young nation into a Republic. As a fellow South Asian democracy and our closest maritime neighbour, Sri Lanka has been a consistent partner of the Indian people and society. Our common heritage, of which Buddhism is a core element, reflects our cultural similarities and millennia old people-to-people ties. Today, we are fortunate to have strong leaders guiding our destinies. As a result, I feel extremely positive about the prospects for our bilateral relationship. Ever since my arrival in Colombo on 8 May 2020, carrying 12.5 tonnes of medical supplies, I have worked with the Sri Lankan side including the Government and its people with a sense of purpose to take our bilateral engagement forward. I am happy to share with you that despite the challenges of the COVID 19, our two Governments have been able to maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges including through the Virtual Bilateral Summit between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on 26 September 2020 and the numerous telephone conversations between Prime Minister Modi and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The National Security Adviser of India visited Colombo in November for the 4th Trilateral Meeting with his counterparts from Sri Lanka and Maldives.

    Short Note Resolution Seeking Parliamentary Approval to Implement the Recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry on Political Victimization 19 April 2021, Colombo, Sri Lanka: On 9th April 2021, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa tabled a Resolution in Parliament seeking approval to implement the recommendations of the ‘Commission of Inquiry to Investigate Allegations of Political Victimization During the Period Commencing 08th January 2015 and Ending 16th November 2019’ (The CoI). The motion is listed to be debated in Parliament this week. The CoI was established1 on 9th January 2020 and its final report was handed over to the President on 8th December 2020. Approval of the Cabinet of Ministers was granted to submit the report of the CoI to the Parliament and implement the recommendations of the CoI on 18th January 2021.2 Accordingly, on 29th January 2021, a Special Presidential Commission of Inquiry (SPCoI) was appointed to implement the recommendations of the CoI.3 The SPCoI is mandated to investigate the respondents mentioned in item No. 08 of the CoI report (relating to the Anti-Corruption Committee) and recommend whether they should be subjected to civic disability. Dinesh Gunawardena, Minister of Foreign Relations in proposing a toast at the 71st Republic Day of India event on 26th January 2020 Your Excellency, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka Honourable Ministers, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, It gives me great pleasure to represent His Excellency the President, the Government of Sri Lanka and its people on this auspicious occasion of the celebration of the Republic Day of India. Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, Sri Lanka and India enjoy longstanding relations spanning into millennia, closely interlinked by history, culture and religion. India is the closest neighbor of Sri Lanka and this close proximity between the two countries had contributed for exchange of civilizational heritage which had nourished each other’s cultures and social values. Both countries are closely linked through the ancient philosophies of Hinduism and Buddhism which remain a strong foundation in our conduct of governance. Sri Lanka had always been accorded a special place in India’s external relations. Beginning from the mythical legends, even as back as in the third century, during the Mauryan Empire, Emperor Asoka had taken personal interest to send his family as religious emissaries to Sri Lanka to share the Buddha’s message of peace. Over time, the interaction between the two countries has manifested in shaping Sri Lanka’s heritage and culture and contributed for the formation of our nation’s identity. In the post colonial period, our nations were shaped by great leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Shri Jawaharlal Nehru and cultural icons in the caliber of Rabindranath Tagore, who together brought an era of regaining the ancient values and wisdom in our region.
