Aylesbury Vale Councillor Update Economic Profile of Quainton Ward April 2014 Produced by Buckinghamshire Business First’s research department P a g e | 2 1.0 Introduction Quainton is home to 2,551 people and provides 300 jobs in 130 businesses. Of these businesses, 20 (15.4 per cent) are Buckinghamshire Business First members. There were 1,251 employed people aged 16-74 living in Quainton ward at the 2011 Census, 24 fewer than the 1,275 recorded in 2001. Over that period the working age population fell 82 to 1,573 while the total population fell 84 to 2,551. The number of households rose by 60 (6.3 per cent) to 1,009. This was the 34th largest increase of all wards household numbers. The largest companies in Quainton include: Quainton Stud Chiltern Construction Limited Litre Meter Limited M Simmons Decorating Contractors Amber Energy DRA Public Relations G M Fabrication Services Ltd George & Dragon There are 12 Quainton, representing 0.8 per cent of working age residents, including five claimants aged 18-24 and five who have been claiming for more than six months. Commercial fibre coverage (as provided by BT) will not cover any of Quainton by March 2015. The Connected Countiesi project run by BBF will extend coverage to 41 per cent of premises through intervention in the Grendon Underwood, North Marston, Waddesdon and Whitchurch exchange areas. The project will deliver extended superfast footprint via additional funding, adaptation of downstream technology and contract claw-back mechanism. The Universal Service Commitment will address all premises where speeds are below 2 Mbps. At the time of the 2001 Censusii, of the 1,275 employed residents 394 people lived and worked in the ward, with the most common destinations by local authority district being: Aylesbury Vale (870, 67.7 per cent) Milton Keynes (73, 5.7) Wycombe (49, 3.8) South Oxfordshire (37, 2.9) Chiltern (30, 2.3) Oxford (24, 1.9) Westminster (22, 1.7) P a g e | 3 2.0 Industrial structure There are 130 businesses located in Quainton employing 300 people. Of these businesses only five employ more than ten people. Education and professional, scientific and technical services account for 37.6 per cent of jobs in Quainton, with the next largest sectors being construction, accommodation and food service and arts and recreation. When compared to the country as a whole, Quainton trades. The ward is under-represented in retail, transport and storage, public administration and health. While Quainton provides jobs in these sectors, the industrial strategy sector where the ward delivers the highest share of national employment is life science. Although the sector accounts for only 1.2 per cent of jobs, this is the 358th highest of all English wards. The proportion of jobs in Quainton in the Industrial Strategy sectors is shown in Table 1 below. At 19.9 per cent, the proportion of Quainton services sector is the 696th highest of all wards in England and exceeds the district, county and na th. These are the only Aylesbury Vale wards among the 1000 most similar, while nine wards are ranked outside the top 5000 best matches in England with Quarrendon being the least similar and only the 7359th best match in England. When all wards in England are considered, Quainton is most similar to Raleigh in East Devon and Crich in Amber Valley, Derbyshire. In contrast Quainton ranks in the bottom quartile for elementary, sales and caring occupations and ranks in the bottom five per cent of wards for the share of residents employed as process, plant and machinery operatives. Skilled trades occupations service occupations Source: Census, ONS, 2011 5.0 Deprivation Buckinghamshire has the lowest level of economic deprivation of any Local Enterprise Partnership, with Aylesbury Vale having the 37th lowest economic deprivation of all 326 local authority districts in England, behind South Bucks (10th) and Chiltern (13th) but ahead of Wycombe (69th). Chart 4 among the least deprived in England with 17 of the 36 wards featuring among the least deprived 10 per cent of all wards in England and only six ranking among the most deprived half of English wards, a stark contrast to the London Borough of Newham where no ward ranks above halfway, highlighting the challenge Aylesbury Vale faces to attract resource to tackle deprivation. P a g e | 7 Quainton has the 1087th lowest economic deprivation of the 7,707 wards in England and is the 19th least economically deprived of the 36 Aylesbury Vale wards, ranking 55th among ds in England is shown in Chart 4 below, with Quainton being one of the three wards shown in the second least deprived decile. Quainton has very low levels of deprivation on all domains except living environment, where is ranks in the second quartile and housing, where high house prices relative to earnings see it ranked in the most deprived quartile. The closest matches in Aylesbury Vale are presented in Table 3 below. This ranks Quainton 14th in the district, with the high average age being driven by both a large share of older residents and comparatively few young adults as shown in Chart 6.
