(See article) Ethiopia Prime Minister Hailemariam held talks with Sudan President Omar al-Bashir in Mekelle on Tuesday this week (February 18) during the celebrations marking the 39th anniversary of the establishment of the Tigrean People‟s Liberation Front. Discussions covered ways to strengthen bilateral trade, opening border crossings and activation of joint economic and trade committees. President Al-Bashir donated the airplane used by the late Prime Minister Meles and his colleagues to fly from Khartoum to Addis Ababa in May 1991 to the TPLF. Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed paid a three-day official visit to Addis Ababa at the end of last week (February 14 to 16), accompanied by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Transport and Aviation, and Information. -

Mrs. Amina Mohamed Cabinet Secretary of Education Kenya Email: [email protected] File Reference: RP/SV Contact: [email protected] 21 May 2018 Your Excellency, LACK OF SOCIAL DIALOGUE IN KENYA Public Services International (PSI) brings together more than 20 million workers, represented by over 700 unions in 163 countries and territories. We are a global trade union federation dedicated to promoting quality public services in every part of the world. Our members, two-thirds of whom are women, work in social services, health care, municipal and community services, central government, and public utilities such as water, electricity and education. PSI observes a worrying trend in Kenya in relation to the Government’s capacity to encourage industrial democracy, harmony and declining to address emerging industrial issues raised by unions. In February 2017, we already addressed a letter to the Cabinet of Health in relation to the doctors’ and nurses’ strike. On Friday 2nd March 2018, the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), called its members to withdraw labour in a national strike against the government and 31 public university managements for failing to negotiate collective bargaining covering the 2017-2021 cycle. This is the result of months of fruitless meetings without any concrete outcome. We further observe that the Government of Kenya, through its various agencies, has not availed of the instruments put in place by labour legislation to amicably address and improve emerging union concerns before they snowball into a crisis. It is important to note that long strikes are not only detrimental to harmonious working relations but also for the economy at large. -

UNITED NATIONS NATIONS UNIES UNITED NATIONS ASSISTANCE MISSION IN SOMALIA UNSOM Briefing to the Security Council by Ambassador Nicholas Kay, Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Somalia 11 March 2014 [AS DELIVERED] Madam President, Members of the Council, Thank you for giving me the opportunity to brief the Council from Mogadishu today and for your continued support to Somalia’s peace-building and state-building. I am on the ground in Mogadishu and not with you in New York due to the intensity of events at this moment. I hope you understand. Madam President The best hope for peace and stability in Somalia, the Horn of Africa and beyond remains a united, secure and federal Somalia. This is achievable. Somalia can reach its goal of an agreed constitution, a nation-wide electoral process and increased security by 2016. But times are tough, and in the short term may get tougher. Insecurity in Mogadishu poses challenges for Somalis, the UN and the international community. 2014 is a crucial year. It is marked, I would say, by security and political challenges, which will be overcome if the Federal Government of Somalia and international partners remain united and if both accelerate delivery of their mutual commitments. Madam President As I speak, an expanded AMISOM and the Somali National Army (SNA) are prosecuting a renewed offensive against Al Shabaab, made possible by UN Security Council Resolution 2124. It will be the most significant and geographically extensive military advance since AMISOM started, and there have already been notable successes. I pay tribute to the commitment and sacrifices made by AMISOM and its police and troop contributing states. -

The contemporary ties between India and Kenya have now evolved into a robust and multi-faceted partnership, marked by regular high-level visits, increasing trade and investment as well as extensive people to people contacts. The presence of Indians in East Africa is documented in the 'Periplus of the Erythraean Sea' or Guidebook of the Red Sea by an ancient Greek author written in 60 AD. A well-established trade network existed between India and the Swahili Coast predating European exploration. India and Kenya share a common legacy of struggle against colonialism. Many Indians participated and supported the freedom struggle of Kenya. India established the office of Commissioner for British East Africa resident in Nairobi in 1948. Apasaheb Pant was the first Commissioner. Following Kenyan independence in December 1963, a High Commission was established. India has had an Assistant High Commission in Mombasa. Vice President Dr. S Radhakrishnan visited Kenya in July 1956. Smt. Indira Gandhi attended the Kenyan Independence celebrations in 1963. PM Indira Gandhi visited Kenya in 1970 and 1981. PM Morarji Desai visited Kenya in 1978. President Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy visited Kenya in 1981. President Moi visited India for a bilateral visit in 1981 and for the NAM Summit in 1983. Bilateral Institutional Mechanisms:The third Joint Commission Meeting at Foreign Minister level was held in Nairobi in June 2021 and the ninth session of Joint Trade Committee at CIM level was held in New Delhi in August 2019. First JDCC meeting on Defence was held in February 2019 in India. -
