Ferris State University Good News Items September 2016 Academic Affairs Academic Affairs COLLEGE OF BUSINESS Dr. Cheolwoo Lee, Associate Professor of Finance, recently published a paper titled “Do Marketing Activities Enhance Firm Value? Evidence from M&A Transactions” co- authored with Juyoun Ryoo and Jin Q Jeon in the June 2016 issue of the European Management Journal. He also presented another paper, “Competition in Multiple Lead Underwriter IPOs and Analyst Behavior” at the 2015 Eastern Finance Association Annual Meetings (Baltimore, MD; April 6-9). Brittaney Headings, College of Business Graphic Design Student, won a Student Gold award in the 2016 West Michigan Addys. It was for her “Modern Craft” project in the Integrated Brand Identity Campaign category. Dr. Hwee-Joo Kam presented her paper entitled "IT Governance Framework: One Size Fits All?" at the Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS). The conference was held at San Diego in August. The study compares the management styles and organizational practices between higher education and banking industry. Here is the link: http://aisel.aisnet.org/amcis2016/ISSec/Presentations/30/ COLLEGE OF EDUCATION & HUMAN SERVICES School of Criminal Justice (SCJ) The 2016–2017 academy class started today with 43 students. This past summer faculty members on and off-campus supervised 400 students in 300 different locations across the United States. Faculty members travelled to the internship locations and visited with each student at their workplace. Students also completed reports and logged their activities during their internship. School of Digital Media (SDM) TDMP Assistant Professor Nick Kuiper oversaw the production of "The Pencil", a short film produced by TDMP students (Abigail Stricker, Camille Huss, Mariah Iltis, Zach Razminas, Kaleb Vinton and Amber Johnson) enrolled in the summer section of TDMP 376 Digital Cinematography. He also served as a reviewer for the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences regional Emmy Awards for the New York and Florida area chapters. During Spring 2015, three TDMP students produced a documentary titled "The Factory". Assistant Professor Joshua Pardon supervised the Independent Study, and served as the producer. This summer, the production was submitted and accepted by the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) Program Service, and is now available for distribution to public television stations nationwide and by Ocean TV-20, a non-commercial station based in Toms Rover, NJ. TDMP Professor Connie Morcom led a group of students this summer on a study abroad trip to London and Paris. While there, students went behind the scenes and analyzed professional productions of television, film and entertainment industries while on tours of Warner Bros. (The Making of Harry Potter), Framestore (Gravity, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Martian) and Blue Bolt (Game of Thrones, PeakyBlinders, Marvel the Avengers). Students also visited museums, galleries and live theatrical events. School of Digital Media Coordinator, Glen Okonoski, has agreed to serve on the Board of Governors for The Eclipse Awards, held annually in Grand Rapids. School of Education (SOE) Sam Morrison and Chelsea Hemenway, education students at our Lansing Campus, have been appointed to the Board for Michigan Reading Association. They started in July and will help promote literacy among pre-service teachers in the state of Michigan. A former graduate student and employee of Ferris State University, Shelli Garland, went to Ireland with Dr. Amy Kavanaugh through a Study Abroad Program. She has also been admitted to a Ph.D. program at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, and has been awarded the College of Education Studentship opportunity, a full tuition and fee scholarship for three years. Dr. Liza Ing presented at the Athens Institute for Education and Research in Greece. The topic of her presentation was “Faculty Attitudes of Working with Students with Special Needs. Dr. Liza Ing is a Learn Lab Fellow-first group through the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning. The School of Education’s Early Childhood Bachelor degree program has a new agreement with Northwestern Michigan College to offer our program in Traverse City. A new cohort of approximately 25 students will start Fall 2017. COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY Debbie Dawson has been elected as practice division chair for Professional Engineers in Higher Education for the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers. Seven CET students traveled to Louisville, KY, for the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. Ryan Gallagher took gold in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration. Gallagher’s win in the national championship saw him named a Rees Scholarship recipient by the Clifford H. “Ted” Rees, Jr. Scholarship Foundation, of Arlington, VA. A silver medal was earned in Automated Manufacturing Technology by the team of Eli Buist; Tyler Cook, and Andrew Ketchum. Ferris’s Dion Analitis earned a fifth-place finish in Diesel Equipment Technology, Trevor Purdy took fifth place in Technical Drafting, and Nicholas Carrington was 15th in CNC Milling Technology. The team of Anis Andrawes, Trevor Boyle, Martial Tsoungui, Yoginder Rana, Remus Roman, and Zachary Wirth took third place in the HVAC System Selection competition. The competition is part of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning (ASHRAE) International Equipment Selection Competition. The Heavy Equipment program held a three-day training in June for the Holland Bus Company. FSU Professors Dan Meyers and Austin Williams taught sessions in cooperation with the Heavy Equipment Transportation Institute and Corporate and Professional Development. Attendees were bus maintenance technicians from school districts that are customers of Holland Bus. Bluebird Bus Corporation and Ford Motor Company presented additional sessions. The FSU HVACR program sponsored its third Regional Instructor Workshop at the Granger Center for Construction and HVACR. Forty- four HVACR instructors from community colleges across the country learned about FSU and the transfer opportunities available to their students. HVACR industry partners also presented technical sessions to provide professional development training. COLLEGE OF HEALTH PROFESSIONS Marie Sickelsteel, Heath Information Management faculty member, is the recipient of the 2016 Michigan Health Information Management Association’s Mentor Award. Marie’ s service to the profession at the regional, state and national levels as well as her ability to disseminate knowledge of HIM practices to others in the field were viewed as areas of excellence. Public Health faculty Drs. Anuli Njoku, Fathima Wakeel, Michael Reger and Emmanuel Jadhav, along with Julie Rowan from the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning, co- authored a manuscript titled “Developing a Learner-Centered Curriculum for a Rural Public Health Program” that has been accepted for publication in an upcoming issue of the International Journal for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. Public Health faculty Dr. Anuli Njoku received a travel grant to attend the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation New Connections Tenth Annual Symposium on June 9-10, 2016 in Princeton, NJ. The symposium serves as a forum for early and midcareer researchers to network and share research ideas. Dr. Michael Reger was awarded a Faculty Research Grant titled “Prostate Cancer Mortality Disparities in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.” The purpose of the grant is to allow a student to be exposed to the entire epidemiological research process while simultaneously getting his or her name on a publication. COLLEGE OF PHARMACY Lambda Kappa Sigma Pharmacy, a professional organization for women in pharmacy, is pleased to announce that the Alpha Iota Chapter from Ferris State University College of Pharmacy, has been named the LKS 2016 Student Chapter of the Year. Dr. Kim Hancock, Department Chair for Pharmaceutical Sciences and Professor of Pharmaceutics, is the Chapter’s advisor. FLITE Dejah Rubel and Kriss Tessin presented “Create a List via Batch Catalog Searching with Sierra 2.1.0.” at the heavily attended Michigan Innovative Users Group Annual Conference 2016 on July 29, 2016. MICHIGAN COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY Dr. Sarah Hinkley has been appointed as Co-Chair of the FSU Academic Service Learning program. Administration and Finance IT Services Vel Pavlov, IT Security Coordinator, and Ralph Williams, Director of Enterprise and Application Services, presented at the Michigan Cyber Range Conference in Ann Arbor, MI. The topic of their presentation was “Lessons Learned from the Trenches: Vulnerability Metrics and Prioritization”. Email for retirees – Starting September 1, 2016, when an employee from Ferris State University leaves the university with a status of retiree, they can choose to keep their Ferris email account. This process will happen as part of the exit interview process with Human Resources. From the Annual IT Satisfaction Survey conducted in April, improvements have been seen in support efficiency, response timeliness, communications, and overall IT support.
