The gold-adorned statue of San Antonio emerged to the faithful under the glory of confetti and streamers. A blessing by Fr. Antonio of St. Leonard Church was followed by a short procession before the statue was placed in its feast chapel for the weekend festivities. During the opening nights of the feast, several bands marched through the streets while friends and families gathered for the annual celebration. On Sunday, a ten hour Grand Procession brought the statue of San Antonio to nearly every street in the neighborhood. It all started on Endicott Street at noon when multiple bands paraded through the feast and the statue emerged to streams of confetti high in the air. During the day, society members took turns carrying the saint and collecting charitable ribbon donations. It was sad to hear that U.S. Senator John McCain succumbed to his illness and passed away on August 25th. I felt angry over the way President Trump had been treating him recently. Trump seemed to let pettiness get in the way of acting presidential. Trump should have been a bigger man. He wasn’t. John McCain was an American hero and his life was one of service to country. He will be missed by all who believe in America, courage, and leadership. President Trump was wrong in the way he treated McCain and owes McCain’s family an apology. Goodbye, Jim, I'll miss you. From: Tim Leone As the walrus said, "The time has come to talk of many things". This publication marks the 6th IBRO newsletter which has been printed since John Grasso's departure. I would like to go on record by saying that I have enjoyed every minute. The correspondence and phone conversations I have with various members have been satisfing beyond words. However, as many of you know, the entire financial responsibility has been paid in total by yours truly. The funds which are on deposit from previous membership cues have never been forwarded. Only four have sent any money to cover membership dues. To date, I have spent over $6,000.00 on postage, printing, & envelopes. There have also been a quantity of issues sent to prospective new members, various professional groups, and some newspapers.I have not requested, nor am I asking or expecting any re-embursement. The pleasure has been mine. However; the members have now received all the issues that their dues (sent almost two years ago) paid for. I feel the time is prudent to request new membership dues to off-set future expenses. After speaking with various members, and taking into consideration the post office increase April 1, 1988, a sum of $20.00, although low to the point of barely breaking even, should be asked for.

  • The Brown Bomber Battles Hitler's Favorite Fighter
GreatMomentsinSports_v14_toprint 04/02/12 The Brown Bomber Battles Hitler’s Favorite Fighter Heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali was famous for loudly proclaiming, “I am the greatest.” Yet even Ali would probably agree that there was one fighter who was at least his equal, if not even greater. That man was known as the Brown Bomber—world heavyweight champion Joe Louis. 1 GreatMomentsinSports_v14_toprint 04/02/12 2 RUTH ROUFF Joe Louis was not exactly a natural at boxing. As a teenager in Detroit in 1932, he was knocked down seven times in his first amateur fight. But his family was very poor, and he dreamed of making enough money to lift them all out of poverty. So he kept training and soon started winning. Noticing his raw power, two fight managers took him to see a veteran trainer, Jack Blackburn. Although Blackburn was himself black, he preferred to work with white fighters. There were two reasons for this. One was that in the 1930s it was much easier for whites to get a shot at title fights. This was partly a white reaction to black heavyweight champion Jack Johnson, the title-holder from 1908–1915. At a time when blacks were supposed to “know their place,” Johnson went out of his way to anger whites. He humiliated his opponents. He loved to show off his money by spending it on flashy clothes, fast cars, and the late-night bar scene. Worst of all, he paraded around with white women on his arm. Some might say that Johnson was simply being himself. That was certainly true.

  • Primo Carnera
From The Website alyHeritage ➩ Primo Carnera https://www.italyheritage.com/great-italians/sport/primo-carnera.htm Primo Carnera Primo Carnera (Sequals, October 25, 1906 - Sequals, June 29, 1967), was the world heavyweight champion from 29 June 1933 to 14 June 1934. For his physical strength, his personal qualities, his life, he is forever imprinted in the history of the boxing world, and has become a legend internationally. Primo Carnera was born in Sequals, a village in the province of Pordenone, in October 25, 1906, and at birth weighed 8 kg. His family was very poor and only survived thanks to the work of his father, a mosaic artist who emigrated to Germany. In 1915 his father was called to fight in the First World War and therefore had to leave his job, leaving all the burden of the family on his wife. The mother then sought a job, but was soon forced to sell her wedding ring to survive. Carnera was thus obliged to leave school and to beg with his brothers. Surprisingly, the "strongest man in the world" always maintained a great love for poetry, and knew whole cantos of the Divine Comedy by heart. He was growing to the point that, at twelve years old, he had the stature of an adult and was also arrested as a deserter, until his relatives came to explain that he was just a kid wearing adult men's clothes. Still a teenager, driven by poverty, Primo emigrated to France to stay with his uncle, finding employment as a carpenter. The uncles introduced him to the world of boxing, organizing a match with a beginner, but Carnera was not yet ready for the big step.

Nicknaming of individual athletes and sports teams is a multifaceted phenomenon the analysis of which reveals numerous reasons for choosing a particular name or nickname. The practice of nicknaming has become so embedded in the concept of sport that it requires exceptional attention by those who create these labels. The goal of this research was to analyse the semantic structure of boxers’ nicknames, i.e. the possible principles of their formation. To realize the research aims 378 male boxers’ nicknames, predominantly in the English language, were collected. The nicknames were allocated to semantic categories according to the content area or areas they referred to. Counts and percentages were calculated for the nicknames in each subsample created with regard to the number of semantic categories used to create a boxer’s nickname and for the group of nicknames allocated to the miscellaneous group. Counts were calculated for all groups within each subsample. Key words: hero, association, figurative language, figures of speech 1. INTRODUCTION Are nicknames only arbitrary formations of little account or are they coinages contrived meticulously and with a lot of prowess? Skipper (1989, 103) alleges that nicknames “often serve as a miniature character sketch”. When discussing nicknames in baseball, Gmelch (2006, 129) elucidates that sobriquets frequently communicate something about the players using them, e.g.
