Introduction Numerous studies have suggested that there is a strong association between oral and systemic health. The health status is showing a declining trend in developing countries because of the lower socioeconomic status.1With the rise in disease incidence resistant pathogenic bacteria, opportunistic infections tend to be on the high and people are always thinking about various alternative way of combating infections.2Numerous number of plants have been identified and umpteen number of studies have been carried out.Garlic is one among such plants.3With its high trace mineral content and enzymes, sulfur containing compounds, garlic has shown anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and antioxidant abilities.Garlic is found to have action against Gram positive and Gram negative organisms like Klebsiellapneumonia,Mycobacterium Tuberculosis and Pseudomonas aeroginosa4 Garlic Garlic otherwise known as Allium sativum, is a species in the onion genus from Liliaceae family. -

Accepted 12 August, 2013 Garlic products are used as sources of medicine in many ways in human beings in their day today life. As a result, researchers from various disciplines are now directing their efforts towards discovering the medicinal values of garlic on human health. The main interest of researchers in the medicinal values of garlic is its broad-spectrum therapeutic effect with minimal toxicity. Garlic extract has antimicrobial activity against many genera of bacteria, fungi and viruses. Garlic contains a higher concentration of sulfur compounds which are responsible for its medicinal effects. The chemical constituents of garlic have also been investigated for treatment of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, blood pressure, atherosclerosis and hyperlipidaemia and highly praised by several authors. Therefore, this paper is reviewed to inspire and impress the young researchers about the medicinal values of garlic. Garlic and onion sensitization among Saudi patients screened for food allergy: a hospital based study *Almogren A1, Shakoor Z1, Adam MH2 1. Department of Pathology, King Khalid University Hospital, King Saud University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Abstract Background: Detection of specific IgE antibodies against food materials indicates allergic sensitization. Some very widely consumed foods materials such as garlic and onion have rarely been investigated for their allergenic potential. Objectives: To assess the presence of garlic and onion specific IgE antibodies in patients investigated for food allergy. Methods: Radioallergosorbent test (RAST) results of 108 patients with clinical suspicion of food allergy who were specifically screened for garlic and onion specific IgE antibodies along with other food allergens were analyzed retrospectively at King Khalid University Hosptial between January 2008 and April 2009. This group of patients included 73 males and 35 females with mean age 27+13.2 years. Estimation of garlic and onion specific IgE antibodies was performed by radioallergosorbent test (RAST) using Pharmacia ImmunoCAP 250 analyzer. Results: Out of the 108 patients 15 (13.8%) had garlic and onion specific IgE antibodies in their sera. Garlic specific IgE antibodies with the RAST scores between one to four were present in 14 and onion specific IgE were detected in 13 patients. For garlic specific IgEs majority of patients (08) had RAST score of one (0.35-0.69 kU/L) and for onion specific IgE antibodies seven patients had RAST score of two (0.70-3.49 kU/L). -

Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol. 20 No. 04 October’21 Original article Onion and garlic induction of severe allergic reactions: sparse reporting cases Somia Gul1 , Saba Javed Hussain2 Abstract: Background: Allergic conditions strides by food sensitization and has lousy impact on the immune system of individuals and has also provokes IgE antibody that spearhead the activation of inflammatory mechanism. The aim of this current research is to evaluate the effect and the preponderance rate of symptoms appearance in garlic and onion allergies. Methodology: The cross sectional study was conducted among general population (N=200) of Karachi from January 2017 to October 2017. Result: Through current study it is revealed that only 50 out of 200 personals showed significant results. Diverse type of symptoms used to appearance in individuals suffering with onion and garlic allergies and it is importantly notifying that some genetic correlation is supposed to exists in these individuals for transmit of these allergies. Conclusion: Onion and garlic both are esoteric allergies, these allergies rate are increasing in our population and patients suffered from very annoying symptoms including some fatal conditions also. Genetic relation is another link of developing these allergies. Limited data has been reported yet but it should be further investigated to evaluate multiple other factors contributing to these allergies. Garlic is one of the herbs that used by traditional practitioners for preparation of herbals medicine. Emergence of drug resistance is obvious and global confront. Seeking for other antibiotics which are new, natural, plant based. Garlic is classified as member of family Alliaceae. Allicin is one of the active principal of freshly crushed garlic homogenates, have variety of antimicrobial activities. This study was conducted to evaluate the anti-bacterial effect of garlic against standard isolates of S. aureus and E. coli kindly obtained from EHNRI. Four different solvents having different polarity were used to extract the bioactive compound from garlic. The Antibacterial activity of the crude extracts of garlic was evaluated against Standard isolates of S. aureus and E. coli by an agar diffusion method. The trial was done in triplicates. A Factorial Design with three factors was used. -

People have used it for the treatment of dermatological and rheumatological diseases since ancient times. There are publications about the therapeutic use of garlic in literature, but many dermatologi- cal side effects, such as allergic and irritant contact dermatitis, generalized urticaria, angioedema, pemphigus, anaphylaxis and photoallergy, can occur after using it as an alternative herbal remedy. The allergenic components of garlic have been recognized as diallyl disulfide, allyl propyl sulfide and allicin. In this case report, we present a 67-year-old man with irritant contact dermatitis following the application of gar- lic on his sacral region. We are presenting our case because garlic has been used frequently by some patients for treatment. Hence the search for an alternative option continues. Medicinal plants have been used as traditional treatment agents since ages. Garlic (Allium sativum) has been recognized for a number of therapeutic properties in the traditional system of medicine. Allium sativum is traditionally employed to treat infection, colds, diabetes, heart disease, and a host of other disorders. Clinically, it has been evaluated for lowering blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose concentration, as well as for the prevention of arteriosclerosis and cancer. It is well known for its potent anti- inflammatory, anti- oxidant, anti-bacterial and antimutagenic properties. This article aims to review the efficacy of garlic in maintaining oral health in particular and overall health in general. Key words: Garlic, Allium Sativum, P. gingivalis, Cardiovascular diseases.
