  • DUBAI Cushman & Wakefield Global Cities Retail Guide
DUBAI Cushman & Wakefield Global Cities Retail Guide Cushman & Wakefield | Dubai | 2019 0 Dubai has developed into the retail hub of the Middle East and is the most sophisticated retail market in the region. The proliferation of retail development over the last ten years has led to Dubai having one of the highest retail to population densities in the world. It finished ahead of New York and London for shopping in TripAdvisor’s recently published second annual Cities Survey. Perhaps the best known of Dubai’s plentiful selection of retail malls is The Dubai Mall which is located in the heart of the prestigious Downtown Dubai and is one of the world’s most-visited retail and entertainment destination, having welcomed more than 80 million visitors annually over the last five years. Dubai Mall provides over 1,350 retail stores and over 200 food and beverage outlets, together with leisure and entertainment attractions. Its most recent expansion in 2017 provides connectivity to the attractions and amenities in the neighbouring Burj Khalifa. Other high- profile retail malls that dominate the retail market include Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Festival City. International retail brands are predominantly operated under license by ‘retail partners’ who hold licenses for multiple brands in their portfolios. These include groups such as Al Shaya, Landmark and Majid Al Futtaim. Often these retail operators can also be mall developers in their own right. These companies are very powerful in the retail sector and can make the difference between a new mall development securing attractive brands or struggling to attract the right brands and potential failure.

  • Dubai, Where Too Much Is Never Enough - New York Times
Dubai, Where Too Much Is Never Enough - New York Times http://travel.nytimes.com/2006/06/04/travel/04dubai.html?pagewante... June 4, 2006 Dubai, Where Too Much Is Never Enough By SETH SHERWOOD Pity the cartographers and guidebook publishers striving to capture Dubai's juggernautlike sprawl. With every month bringing announcements of audacious new hotels and leisure concepts — a huge artificial coral reef studded with World War II planes and pounds of gold is being built for scuba divers — today's top draws can easily become tomorrow's fire sales. Dubai travel guides and maps, their shelf life shorter than eggs, can pretty much go straight from printing press to pulp plant. For the moment, Dubai's marquee attraction is the much-touted 25-story, 1,300-foot-long ski run inside the new Mall of the Emirates. But even more dazzling is the après-ski scene afforded by the 400 shops and restaurants in the 6.5 million-square-foot mall. For luxury goods, follow the black robes of Saudi billionaires' wives to the Rivoli, Harvey Nichols and Yves Saint Laurent boutiques. For nourishment, join the D & G-wearing Lebanese women crowding the Giorgio Armani cafe. During his decades of travels, the 14th-century explorer Ibn Battuta traversed North Africa, Egypt, Persia, India, China and Andalusia. Thanks to the new Ibn Battuta Mall — "the world's largest themed mall" — 21st-century shoppers can make the same trip in an afternoon. Containing 250 outlets spread through six architecturally distinct zones based on the countries Battuta visited, the place is a history lesson and retail blitz in one.

To further explore this phenomenon, this thesis focuses on three aspects that affect the dynamic relationship between the primary city and the cities within cities (sub-cities) in the Gulf region with special emphasis on Dubai. First, the naming problem of the sub-city illustrates why the tension between competing identities produces a set of effects that could either enforce or confuse the overall urban identity. Secondly, this thesis demonstrates how Dubai utilizes two seemingly opposed growth strategies (sprawl and infill) in order to grow as a primary city and to integrate its sub-cities. The last aspect explores how Dubai’s internal governance structure enables the freedom and autonomy of sub-cities.
