Ph.D Edited by David Dandria November 2020 i ERA was set up in April 2016 to safeguard the environment in order to achieve a sustainable quality of life. This ERA achieves by mainstreaming environmental targets and objectives across Government and society and by taking the leading role in advising Government on environmental policy- making at the national level, as well as in the context of international environmental negotiations. Evidence-based policy covering all environmental topics is developed by ERA and is backed by a robust data gathering structure. The Authority also draws up plans, provides a licensing regime, monitors activities having an environmental impact and integrates environmental considerations within the development control process. ERA is instrumental in the formulation and implementation of legislation aimed at designating protected areas harbouring important habitats and species, as well as legally protecting many species of flora and fauna. The Flora, Fauna and Natural Habitats Protection Regulations, 2006 (SL 549.44) are an important legal instrument in this respect. These Regulations, together with the development of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), are significant contributions to the conservation of Malta’s biodiversity. Subject of study were Pb, Cd, As, Hg, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Fe etc. and their content in seawater, sediment, algae and various benthic organisms. Available data from the Bulgarian coast and also from different Black Sea areas were presented. Key words: heavy metals, Black sea, algae, mussels, benthos Introduction The Black Sea is the largest semi-enclosed sea in the world and widely perceived to be heavily polluted. Together with Azov Sea, it covers an area of 462000 km2. Its east to west dimension is 1150 km and from north to south is 610 km. The depth of water approaches 2200 m and is virtually isolated from other seas (Readman et al., 2002). The Black Sea is surrounded by six countries located in Europe and Asia: Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine (Fig. 1). To the south and southwest, the Strait of Bosphorus connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara, which in turn, is connected to the Aegean Sea and Mediterranean Sea through the Strait of Dardanelles. To the north it is open to the Azov Sea through Kerch (Strezov, 2012). In fact, the Black Sea is influenced by 17 countries, 13 capital cities and some 160 million people. -

BtSHOJ' MOSEtrM INTRODUCTION The following report on crustaceans selected from materia1lwhich has accumulated in Bishop Museum for several years inc1uder (1), new species, (2) known species as new Hawaiian records, an,(i (3) known species rarely recorded in the central Pacific. Recently, valuable collections have been received as a result of the current dredging operations of the M alliin, a boat of the Fi hand Game Division, Territorial Board of Agriculture and Forestry. These collections clearly reveal the presence of a crustacean fauna a ut the Hawaiian Islands. at depths of about 10 fathoms and beyond, which is not seen on the shallow reefs. Many of the unique species taken nearly 50 years ago by the Albatross of the United States Fis Com~ mission have again been brought to view. Other rare crustaceans recorded in the report were receive1 from the Honolulu Aquarium and came from fish traps operated b~ com mercial fishermen off the coast of Oahu at depths ranging aro~nd 16 fathoms. These specimens show that fauna at these depths har close affinities with that of the western Pacific and the Indian Ocej. It is well known that many organisms, both land and marine ~orrns, have been introduced into the Hawaiian area within recent I.years, chiefly as a result of war activities. Ocean-going craft returning to Hawaii from forward areas in the Pacific transport on theil' hulls marine organisms not previously recognized among local shore fauna, and some of these inunigrants become established in the new e9viron ment. -

The location of New Zealand material is given for a number of species first recorded in the New Zealand Inventory of Biodiversity but with no further data. Information on geographical distribution, habitat range and, in some cases, depth range and colour are given for each species. The warty crabs used as study material were freshly obtained from fishermen after the breeding season (end of July). According to the data obtained in the study where the female and male individuals were evaluated separately, the average moisture, crude protein, crude lipid and crude ash contents in female E. verrucosa were 77.89%, 20.96%, 0.91% and 2.66%, respectively. In male E. verrucosa, it was found to be 76.30%, 21.44%, 0.79% and 2.47%, respectively. In the study, it was determined that the difference between male and female individuals in crude protein and crude lipid values was significant (p<0.05). Although the crude protein content was low in females, the crude lipid content was found to be higher. In other words, it was determined that while the protein ratio decreases in female individuals after the reproductive period, the lipid ratio increases. This suggests that the energy lost due to ovulation during the reproductive period may have been met by the accumulation of fat in the body. -

NAYAK Karnatak University Marine Station, Postgraduate Department of Marine Biology, Kodibag,Karwar 581303 Received 3 January 1977; revised received 11 April 1977 Complete life history of the O. rugulosus rugutosus, as observed in the laboratory, compris- ing 4 zoeal and a megalopa stages, is described. Comparisons are made with the larvae of O. truncatus from New Zealand, the only other species of the genus in which the larvae are so far known. Important generic features suggested, based on the present work, are dorsal spine on 1st abdominal segment in zoeal stages and ventral spine on ischium of chiliped of rnegalopa. HE crab family Xanthidae is one of the most 0·53 mm : abdomen length, 1·12 mm; and duration predominant families of rocky shore crabs, of stage, 3-5 days. Coker during his investigations of the fishery resources of Peru during 1906-1908 were a large number of Crustacea, representing 80 species. It was the original intention to publish the reports on the Crustacea under one cover, but as it has not been feasible to complete them at the same time, the accounts of the barnacles a and isopods b have been issued first. There remain the decapods, which comprise the bulk of the collection, the stomatopods, and two species of amphipods. One of these, inhabiting the sea-coast, has been determined by Mr. Alfred O. Walker; the other, from Lake Titicaca, by Miss Ada L. Weckel. See papers immediately following. Throughout this paper, the notes printed in smaller type were con tributed by Doctor Coker. One set of specimens has been returned to the Peruvian Government; the other has been given to the United States National Museum. Economic value.—The west coast of South America supports an unusual number of species of large crabs, which form an important article of food. -

Field research was carried out at Echinoderm Reef near the University of Auckland's Leigh Marine Laboratory in nofih-eastem New Zealand. 0.truncatus is a predator, sparsely distributed in patches of cobbles in mid to upper regions of the shore. Its distribution overlaps with a wide range of food items in the habitat, including other crabs, coiled gastropods, limpets and chitons. It forages primarily within the cobble patches. Prey species in this habitat on Echinoderm Reef appear to be abundant and crab numbers are considered too low to have a major impact on prey populations. The crab size most frequently encountered on Echinodem Reef was between 20-45 mm carapace length (C[,) but there was no clear size structure to indicate particular age groups. Strong recruitment occurred from January to March 1997 and was much higher in 1!97 than in the corresponding period of 1996. Ovigerous females were observed from October 1996 to February 1997, with a peak in November 1996. The cheiipeds of male and female O.trurtcalus are dimorphic, as in most other molluscivorous crabs, and are used to break open the shells of prey. -
