For 30 years he has ruled the world of retail fashion – bringing the high street to the catwalk and the catwalk to the high street – but after a damaging public inquiry, his image is tarnished. To save his reputation, he decides to bounce back with a highly publicized and extravagant party celebrating his 60th birthday on the Greek island of Mykonos. A satire on the grotesque inequality of wealth in the fashion industry, the film sees McCreadie’s rise and fall through the eyes of his biographer, Nick (David Mitchell). • Masculinity in Comic Midlife Crisis in Michael Winterbottom's Trip Series
139 LUCIA KRÄMER The Imitation Competition: Masculinity in Comic Midlife Crisis in Michael Winterbottom's Trip Series "It's not about the destination, it's about the journey." (S1E5)1 1. Introduction Although the comedy programme examined in this article is simply, and somewhat self-deprecatingly, called The Trip (2010-), rather than 'The Journey' or some other title with more gravitas, the implications of the overarching metaphor are independent of genre. The geographical journey evokes the theme of the journey of life: its phases; the events, obstacles and detours on the way; the persons encountered during the journey, as well as its inevitable destination, i.e. death. This article examines how Michael Winterbottom's Trip series uses this metaphor to present its two middle-aged male protagonists – played by the British comedy stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as fictionalised versions of themselves2 – in a way that combines the ridiculous with the absurd by evoking what Martin Esslin, in his seminal book on The Theatre of the Absurd, called a "sense of metaphysical anguish at the absurdity of the human condition," fuelled by the "senselessness of life" (1980, 23-24) and the elusiveness of a sense of self. In fact, the statement from the character of Steve Coogan in The Trip that precedes this article self-referentially encapsulates the life situation of its two main characters as well as the non-teleological structure of the programme.3 After a general introduction to the Trip series, the initial focus of the following analysis will be on the show's extensive use of intertextuality and the protagonists' obsession with performance.

Nicholas Biddle, Anacharsis, and the Grand Tour HEN NICHOLAS BlDDLE (1786-1844) TRAVELED in Europe in the years 1804 to 1807, he kept a series of notebooks in which Whe recorded both his movements and his thoughts on the sights he saw and the people he met. The recovery of these notebooks in 1976 and the recent publication of two of them enable us to get a better picture of his early character and to place him within the context of the history of American travelers. Why did he go to the Aegean of all places?1 To answer this question, I begin by way of a fictional detour. In E. M. Forster's novel A Room with a View, the Reverend Mr. Beebe, speaking of the Miss Alans' proposed visit to Athens and Constantinople, says: I haven't been to Greece myself, and I don't mean to go, and I can't imagine any of my friends going. It is altogether too big for our little lot. Don't you think so? Italy is just about as much as we can manage. Italy is heroic, but Greece is godlike or devilish—I am not sure which, and in either case absolute- ly out of our suburban focus.... I was saying, if our poor little Cockney lives must have a background, let it be Italian. Big enough in all conscience. The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel for me. There the contrast is just as much as I can realize. But not the Parthenon, not the frieze of Phidias at any price..

She also brought to campus UK classicist and leading expert on ancient medicine Dr. Helen King as visiting Rydell Professor and organized several mainstage events around her visit. In March, alumni mingled with majors at the swanky Woman’s Club of Minnesota for a social and networking event. For us it was great to see old friends; for our majors it was exciting to note the many different careers that our alumni go on to do. Then in April over 200 high school Latin students from Rochester high schools came to campus for a day of classics events including a talk by Dr. King; the event was such a hit that the teachers came back with their ninth graders a few weeks later.
