POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES AND POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS

POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES Possessive adjectives are words like my, your, our, his, her, its and their. They are used before nouns and function like adjectives. They qualify the nouns directly.

POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES:

Examples:

1. This is my pen. 2. That is your umbrella. 3. That is her mobile. 4. This is our class. 5. That is their home ground. 6. This is his bike. 7. The dog lost its tail. 8. My car is very old. 9. Our dog is black. 10.Their homework is on the table. REMEMBER: A possessive adjective is always followed by a noun. Examples : your phone, my brother, his dog etc. Rajashree Patil

Fill in the blanks with appropriate possessive adjectives: 1. I received ------appointment letter yesterday. 2. Our parents are ------Gods. 3. He cares more for ------last child. 4. Boys and girls have ------common problems. 5. The rat lost ------tail in the fight against the cat.

ANSWERS: 1. I received my appointment letter yesterday. 2. Our parents are our Gods. 3. He cares more for his last child. 4. Boys and girls have their common problems. 5. The rat lost its tail in the fight against the cat.

OTHER EXAMPLES:

1. We went to their house yesterday. (their – possessive adjective)

2. James has never invited me to his parties. (his – possessive adjective)

3. Where is your umbrella? (your – possessive adjective)

6. This is my passport. Where is yours? (my – possessive adjective; yours – possessive pronoun)

7. You have never visited our home. (our – possessive adjective)

8. Her wardrobe was full of nice clothes. (her – possessive adjective)

9. This is not your phone. It is his. (your – possessive adjective)

10. The cat has had its breakfast. (its – possessive adjective)

POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS

The forms – mine, ours, yours, his, hers, theirs- are used without the following nouns : They are called possessive pronouns. REMEMBER: A possessive pronoun is used without a noun. Examples are: his, hers, yours, theirs, ours, mine etc.
