NARAL_Ep5_v04_20200623.mp3 Jess McIntosh [00:00:00] This limited series podcast is based on the book, "The Lie that Binds" by NARAL Pro-Choice America president Ilyse Hogue with Ellie Langford. Each episode builds on the history terminology and figureheads established in the last. So we strongly recommend that you start from episode one before jumping ahead. Brianna Wu [00:00:18] The truth is, GamerGate is less of an event and more of a playbook to use against someone you don't like. Jess McIntosh [00:00:26] This is Brianna Wu, co-founder of independent videogame studio Giant SpaceKat. Brianna Wu [00:00:32] This is the GamerGate playbook. Find someone you want to shut up. Go to their entire life. Go through all their social media posts. Investigate them and find something to attack them with. And then get an army of people online to scream from the hills about this fact which may or may not be true and destroyed their reputation. The idea is to make the cost of speaking out so high that it's easier to just remain silent. Jess McIntosh [00:00:59] The GamerGate controversy started in August 2014. Brianna Wu [00:01:01] All through 2014 my women colleagues were being basically bullied out of the industry. Jess McIntosh [00:01:09] It was set off after game developer Zoe Quinn was falsely accused by their ex-boyfriend of sleeping with a videogame journalist to garner positive reviews for their company's new game. This led to an avalanche of rape threats, doxing and death threats against Quinn, as well as women who criticized sexism in the game industry in general.

  • On-Site Historical Reenactment As Historiographic Operation at Plimoth Plantation
Fall2002 107 Recreation and Re-Creation: On-Site Historical Reenactment as Historiographic Operation at Plimoth Plantation Scott Magelssen Plimoth Plantation, a Massachusetts living history museum depicting the year 1627 in Plymouth Colony, advertises itself as a place where "history comes alive." The site uses costumed Pilgrims, who speak to visitors in a first-person presentvoice, in order to create a total living environment. Reenactment practices like this offer possibilities to teach history in a dynamic manner by immersing visitors in a space that allows them to suspend disbelief and encounter museum exhibits on an affective level. However, whether or not history actually "comes alive"at Plimoth Plantation needs to be addressed, especially in the face of new or postmodem historiography. No longer is it so simple to say the past can "come alive," given that in the last thirty years it has been shown that the "past" is contestable. A case in point, I argue, is the portrayal of Wampanoag Natives at Plimoth Plantation's "Hobbamock's Homesite." Here, the Native Wampanoag Interpretation Program refuses tojoin their Pilgrim counterparts in using first person interpretation, choosing instead to address visitors in their own voices. For the Native Interpreters, speaking in seventeenth-century voices would disallow presentationoftheir own accounts ofthe way colonists treated native peoples after 1627. Yet, from what I have learned in recent interviews with Plimoth's Public Relations Department, plans are underway to address the disparity in interpretive modes between the Pilgrim Village and Hobbamock's Homesite by introducing first person programming in the latter. I Coming from a theatre history and theory background, and looking back on three years of research at Plimoth and other living history museums, I would like to trouble this attempt to smooth over the differences between the two sites.

  • Silicon Shores Corporation Company Backgrounder
Silicon Shores Corporation Company Backgrounder Company Overview Headquartered in Mountain View, CA Silicon Shores Corporation is the company overseeing operations of the Shoreline Lake Boathouse and American Bistro at the Shoreline Lake Recreational Area and Wildlife Sanctuary. Silicon Shores manages the facilities through a leasing arrangement with the City of Mountain View, which owns the Shoreline Lake park area. This private company, established in 2000, is incorporated in California. Christina Ferrari is the owner and President and entered into the relationship with the City in 2000. Given the origins of Shoreline Lake, the City of Mountain View’s transformation of 544 acres of junkyard, hog farm, two substandard dumps, low lying flood plains, and a sewage treatment plant into a nature preserve was quite an undertaking. Partnering with Silicon Shores ensured that the area can provide the services and amenities that the surrounding urban population and visitors would appreciate finding within a nature preserve. Vision & Mission The company’s goal for the Shoreline Lake area is to create an experience unmatched within Silicon Valley for residents and workers of the South Bay, and beyond. The centerpiece of the Park, Shoreline Lake is a man- made, 50-acre, salt water lake filled by waters pumped in from the San Francisco Bay that circulate back out into Permanente Creek. However, a densely populated, heavily-developed area surrounds the Park, which includes many well-known hi-tech firms (e.g., Google headquarters is right next door). Even so, Shoreline Lake, a safe and expansive waterway for many water sports, is also a wildlife sanctuary and home to many rare, migratory birds, such as the burrowing owl.

  • Progress Report #1
Welcome to the first progress report for the 2021 World Fantasy Convention! We are pressing on, in times of Covid, and continuing to plan a wonderful in person convention in Montréal, Canada. We have a stunning guest list and a superlative team for both planning and the creation of the gathering not to be missed. We will be at the Hôtel Bonaventure, an iconic landmark in the city. The hotel is located in the heart of downtown and just outside the Old Port of Montréal. It is near major roads, right across the street from Gare Centrale, the Montréal train station, and is directly connected to two Metro stations, making it easily accessible for both motorists and public transport users. We will be able to enjoy a lavish 2.5 acres of gardens with streams inhabited by ducks and fish as well as a year-round outdoor heated pool. Our committee is busy excitedly planning a convention that will surpass your every expectation. Our theme will be YA fantasy. The field of young adult fantasy has grown from being popular to becoming a dominant category of 21st century literature, bringing millions of new readers to hundreds of new authors. We are working on a diverse program that will explore this genre that celebrates fantasy fiction in all of its forms: epic, dark, paranormal, urban, and other varieties. We invite members to share what they enjoy, what they have learned, what they have written themselves, and what they hope to see coming in the field of young adult fantasy fiction. We look forward to seeing you all in Montréal! Diane Lacey Chair Diversity Statement The committee for the 2021 World Fantasy Convention is unconditionally devoted to promoting diversity within our convention.
