Koch, MD Chair, Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine Professor of Ophthalmology 2019 Steinert Memorial Lecturer Professor and Allen, Mosbacher and Law Chair in Ophthalmology Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine Dr. Douglas Koch is a Professor and The Allen, Mosbacher, and Law Chair in Ophthalmology at the Cullen Eye Institute, Department of Ophthalmology, Baylor College of Medicine. He is the Editor Emeritus of the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and Past President of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Ophthalmological Society, and the International Intra-Ocular Implant Club. He has authored over 200 articles and book chapters on the topics of cataract and refractive surgery. He has given over 30 named lectures, including the Jackson Memorial, Kelman, Binkhorst, and Barraquer Lectures at the American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting; the Charles Kelman Innovators Lecture at the 2012 annual meeting of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the first Steinert Refractive Surgery lecture at their 2017 meeting; the Binkhorst Medal Lecture at the 2013 annual meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons; the Lans Lecture at the International Society of Refractive Surgery Annual Meeting; the Ronald G. Michels Memorial Lecture at Johns Hopkins University; the Jules Stein Lecture at UCLA; the Proctor Lecture at UCSF; the Arthur Lim Lecture at the Asia-Pacific Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery; and the First Gold Medal Lecture at the Australian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in Queensland, Australia. In 2013, he received the Leslie Dana Gold Medal from the St. Louis Society for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Daniel F. Martin, MD Chair, Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute Professor of Ophthalmology 2019 Gavin Herbert Lecturer Daniel F. Martin, MD is Chair of the Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute, the Barbara and A. Malachi Mixon III Institute Chair in Ophthalmology, and Professor of Ophthalmology in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Martin completed medical school at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine followed by residency and chief residency in ophthalmology at Emory University School of Medicine. He completed a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery and Diseases at Duke University Eye Center followed by a two-year fellowship in Uveitis and Ocular Immunology at the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Martin’s primary research interest is in clinical trials and the evaluation of new treatments for retinal diseases. Dr. Martin currently serves as the Network Chair for the DRCR Retina Network and previously served as the Study Chair for the Comparison of AMD Treatments Trials (CATT). He has also served as principal investigator for many AMD, diabetes, and uveitis trials including AREDS, SOCA, and MUST, and has served on numerous Data and Safety Monitoring Boards and Steering Committees. Dr Martin was extensively involved in the development of the ganciclovir implant and later valganciclovir for the treatment of CMV retinitis, serving as Study Chair for the clinical trials that resulted in FDA approval of both of these drugs. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, delivered 37 named lectures, and delivered more than 370 invited lectures. Dr. Martin has been the recipient of numerous awards including the 74th Edward Jackson Memorial Lecture, the Heed-Gutman Award, the Gass Medal, the Roger Johnson Award in AMD Research, the Pyron Award, the Crystal Apple Award, the Rosenthal Award, the Sam and Maria Miller Award for Scientific Achievement in Clinical Research, and the Cless Medal. Dr Martin has previously served on the Board of Governors for the Cleveland Clinic. Baruch (Barry) Kuppermann, MD, PhD Chair & Director, Gavin Herbert Eye Institute Professor, Vitreoretinal Surgery Dr. Baruch Kuppermann is Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, and Director, Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, UC Irvine. Dr. Kuppermann also holds a joint appointment with the UCI Department of Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Kuppermann’s laboratory research focuses on assessing the toxicity of drugs on retinal cells in culture. He is involved in many multicenter clinical drug trials as a principal investigator evaluating new drugs for the treatment of retinal diseases, and has served as the national leader of numerous multi-centered clinical trials. Dr. Kuppermann is an active teacher and lecturer, and has given numerous named lectures and has been an invited visiting professor at many academic institutions. He has published over 200 articles in the medical literature, and over 50 book chapters. Dr. Kuppermann is a highly regarded clinician and surgeon. He has an active clinical practice focusing on the treatment of retinal conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and age- related macular degeneration, as well as surgical conditions such as retinal detachments, macular holes, and epiretinal membranes. Dr. Kuppermann sees patients at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute in Irvine and Pavilion 2 at the UCI Medical Center in Orange. Sumit (Sam) Garg, MD Medical Director, GHEI Associate Clinical Professor, Cataract, External Disease/Corneal & Refractive Surgery Vice Chair, Clinical Ophthalmology Dr. Sumit (Sam) Garg is Vice Chair of Clinical Ophthalmology, Medical Director, and an Associate Professor in Cataract, Refractive, External Disease and Corneal Surgery at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at UC Irvine. Dr. Garg participates in numerous research projects, many of which he has presented at national and international meetings. Dr. Garg is actively participating in research related to the use of lasers in corneal transplantation, endothelial transplant techniques, collagen cross-linking for keratoconus, and dry eye disease. He has been invited to lecture at meetings and symposia locally, nationally and internationally. In addition to his research activities, Dr. Garg has authored numerous book chapters including chapters on LASIK, ophthalmic imaging, and corneal transplantation. Dr. Garg currently serves as chair of the ASCRS Young Eye Surgeons clinical committee and as a co- medical director for SightLife/CorneaGen. He is currently medical monitor for VisionCare Inc. He has been recognized in Best Doctors and Super Doctors "Rising Stars” yearly since 2013 and has received the Orange County Medical Association’s Physician of Excellence award since 2014. Additionally, he was chosen by Ocular Surgery News as a Premier 300 Refractive Cataract Surgeon. Dr. Garg is actively involved in resident and fellow teaching. In 2014, Dr. Garg published a textbook entitled, “Ophthalmic Microsurgery: Principles, Techniques, and Applications,” a manual designed for the education of ophthalmology trainees. Dr. Garg is a highly-skilled clinician, surgeon, and teacher, and has particular expertise in cataract surgery and complication management, corneal (PKP, FLEK, DSEK, DMEK), conjunctival, and refractive surgery. Lbachir BenMohamed, PhD Professor, Ophthalmology Dr. BenMohamed earned his PhD in immunology at the Pasteur Institute, Paris, France. He completed a first postdoctoral fellowship at the Pasteur Institute, Paris, France, and later two postdoctoral positions in the United States at the City of Hope National Medical Center, Duarte, CA, and then at The Beckman Research Institute of Immunology, Duarte, CA. At UC Irvine, he holds joint appointments in the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, the Institute for Immunology, the Department
