KINNEGAR TO DONAGHADEE GREENWAY PROPOSED ROUTE The Council, in October 2017, engaged AECOM and Sustrans to commence the design of a greenway scheme between Kinnegar and Donaghadee. The current proposed route put forward as part of this pre-application community consultation is shown below. The proposed route is approximately 28.3km (17.6 miles) in length, starting at Airport Road West in Kinnegar, terminating at the Commons Park, Donaghadee. For most of the route, the proposed path is 3.0m width, increasing to 4.0m at structures (pedestrian/cycle bridges etc.) Where the existing path is of sufficient width / quality, no construction is proposed (denoted by yellow linetype in the drawing below); examples of these areas include Crawfordsburn Beach and Ballyholme Beach. DETAIL 3: BOARDWALK AT SWINELEY BAY To the west of Crawfordsburn Beach, the proposed route passes along the beach at Swineley Bay. In its current state, passage along the beach is affected by the variable ground conditions which can change from day to day depending on the weather. The preferred design for Swineley Bay is to place a boardwalk above the mean high water mark. The boardwalk will match the existing ground TYPICAL DECKING DETAIL PLAN VISUALISATION OF BOARDWALK VERTICAL BAR RAILING SLIP RESISTANT COMPOSITE DECKING: levels190 x 40mm along WOOD-POLYMER COMPOSITE the (HOLLOW CHAMBERS) beach. DETAIL 2: PEDESTRIAN / CYCLE BRIDGE & TIMBER BOARDWALK AT GREY POINT FORT To the north of Grey Point Fort, the proposals seek to establish a 4.0m (w) x 290m (l) raised timber boardwalk. A raised boardwalk is proposed so as to minimise disturbance of the tree root systems. An example of this style of boardwalk from Limburg in Belgium is illustrated below (right). The boardwalk can be supported on DETAIL 5: SHARED USE FACILITY BETWEEN GROOMSPORT & DONAGHADEE GOLF CLUB NO CONSTRUCTION PROPOSED ALONG THIS SECTION. EXISTING PATH The proposals between Groomsport and Donaghadee Golf Club are to re-purpose the existing footway as a shared-use facility. a series of slender piles which requires very little excavation; the boardwalk route MAINTAINED & INCORPORATED INTO GREENWAY ROUTE and foundations can therefore be designed to take the path of least resistance This reflect similar schemes currently operating in Northern Ireland including A8 Belfast/Larne Road and the A2 between Belfast through the trees. In addition, a 4.0m wide, 68m long steel pedestrian / cycle and Bangor. The existing hardstip, verge and footway provide an acceptable cross-section for the establishment of an off-carriageway route for non-motorised users in the existing verge. The proposed cross section illustrated below shows a 1.0m bridge is proposed to span across the ravine. These proposals combine to provide RAISED TREATED TIMBER BOARDWALK; 4.0m WIDTH X 290m LENGTH planted verge and 1.0m hard strip adjacent to a 3.0m wide shared-use path. a high quality route between the paths on both sides of Grey Point.
