One person stated being grateful for being alive. It was a particularly poignant moment which has stuck with me in the years since. Of all the things we take for granted life itself probably ranks at the top. The truth, however, is tomorrow is never a guarantee. We need to live each day to the fullest, never discarding an opportunity granted to us. We may never see it again. As we emerge into what some of my colleagues call the great offseason may the excitement of the holidays carry us to bigger and better triumphs, and never down into the doldrums. Rabbi Evan B. Rubin FROM THE PRESIDENT TO BOLDLY WHERE FEW MEN HAVE GONE Right now I’m feeling like Captain Kirk from the Star Trek series and I’m about to bring the the starship, USS Enterprise, into port so she can receive an overhaul and the necessary upgrades since setting sail back in 2014. I’m turning over my command to an experienced and highly capable new President and Executive Board. They are familiar with the Orthodox Universe and they will navigate us further on our mission and beyond. Good luck to Bobby Berkowitz and the new Executive Board. Go with strength. November and the Jewish month of Cheshvan are nearly aligned from beginning to end, much as our two calendars were last month. Cheshvan opens with Parsha Noach, a story of a uniquely different man from the people that lived in his time. Noach was chosen by G-d and then tested. His adherence to G-d’s plan assured his survival of the great destructive flood. While in his time he was chosen, we for the first time see the lineage of Abram who later becomes Abraham. We don’t compare them as they lived at different times and faced different experiences. This was G-d’s plan and his methodical path for creating the Jews is deeply rooted in the fact that we were chosen to receive His Torah. This is our birthright and our blessing. The story repeats every year and studying it we learn more and more about ourselves and the universe in which we live. It has made a life time full of adventure, learning, and enlightenment for me. Thank you for choosing me as your President and allowing me to steer Etz Chayim for just a little while. I’m confident our shul will go and discover more of the world around us and continue to be the welcoming Orthodox portal for Jews near and far. We are always on a great journey exploring all that surrounds us. As we continue to be guided by the Torah, we will make wise decisions on our direction and we will be drawn to the flame that burns brightly in Orthodox Jewry. Danny Becker, President SISTERHOOD NEWS The Etz Chayim/B’nai Israel Rummage Sale will be held on November 6th and 7th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Clean-up is on November 8th.
