This week the PSSA tennis team consisting of Norm Haeusler, Jake Bourchier, Jane Haeusler and Paige Kenny, all from Barellan Central School, played in the Riverina final of the PSSA Tennis Knockout against Griffith Small Schools, consisting of players from Weethalle, Tharbogang and Goolgowi. For both finalists to come from small schools within the Riverina is an amazing achievement and a prime example of “small schools achieving big things!” Barellan seemed a fitting host to the big day, famous for 'The Big Tennis Racquet,' and even more famous for its ties to Evonne Goolagong. As the kids hit up against the training wall, now named in her honour, it provided a wealth of inspira- tion for the kids competing and some nostalgia for the older generations. The high level of tennis reaffirmed the array of sporting talent produced in the Riverina. The standard of tennis was very high and players were supported by many parents and community members from Barel- lan, Griffith and surrounding towns as well as Cheryl Rawle, tennis coach from Griffith who coaches many of the players and has been involved in teaching and promoting tennis to children in the Riverina for many generations. Ardlethan/Barellan defeated Griffith small schools 5 sets to 3, however the difference was only 8 games, indicating the closeness of the competition. Both boys were successful in their singles matches; Norm 6-0, Jake 6-2. Jane won her sin- gles match 6-4 while Paige, despite playing some great tennis was defeated. The boys won their doubles match 6-0, how- ever the Griffith Small Schools girls defeated our girls 6-2. It was then up to the results of the mixed doubles, Barellan needing to win one of the matches to secure victory. Jake and Paige teamed up but were unfortunately defeated 2-6, leaving the sibling combination of Norm and Jane Haeusler to battle it out. After many long rallies in a high quality game of tennis, Norm and Jane were successful, winning 6-2 to become Riverina Champions and secure our place in the quarter finals. Both teams are to be congratulated on their performance and excellent display of sportsmanship. I am very proud of the Barellan students and their dedication to tennis, including hours spent practising both in school sport time and in their own time. Thank you to Tina Haeusler, Cathy Bourchier and Alan Hesketh for their continued help and support! We will now play Parkes Public School in the quarter finals early next term at a venue to be decided! A conference between the District Surveyor and the Railway Traffic Branch led to Coolamon being suggested and agreed to by all parties. "Coolamon" is an aboriginal name meaning "dish or vessel for holding food or water". A plan showing the northern boundary of Coolemon (Coolamon) Holes Run in 1870 shows a cluster of numerous water holes which he referred to as Coolamon Holes. This was the native name given to the holes and the origin of the name as applied today. The name being finalised and the extent of the village and suburban boundaries fixed, the village of Coolamon was gazetted on 3rd October, 1881.
