STEPHEN LYNCH (D-Mass.) asked if DEJOY would replace removed sorting machines -- DEJOY said no, but they couldn’t get around to figuring out why, because LYNCH had used up all of his time. MEANWHILE, millions of Americans are wondering if their prescription drugs are going to get delivered, if their mail-in votes will actually be counted and what elected officials are actually doing to make their lives better in the middle of a pandemic and economic recession.

    August 12, 2020 Western Edition Volume 2, Number 30 An ambitious new plan offers Delta water and economic hope for the San Joaquin valley The San Joaquin Valley is bracing for the economic impacts to come from implementing the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act over the next 20 years. Without changes, the regulation could lead to more than a million acres of fallowing and as much as $7 billion in lost revenues every year, with the worst financial impacts rippling down to California’s most disadvantaged communities, according to a report released earlier this year. With this reality, a coalition has emerged around a complex and ambitious approach to bring water to the valley, one that could head off the A new plan takes a different approach to Delta water flows. Box 9020082 San Juan, PR 00902-0082 Dear Governor Rosselló, I write as president of the American Statistical Association to respectfully urge you to keep Puerto Rico’s statistical agency, El Instituto de Estadísticas de Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics, PRIS), and its board of directors fully independent. I also draw your attention to the 2,800 individuals—and still growing—who have signed a petition with this same request.1 At this critical historical juncture, Puerto Rico needs accurate, objective, and timely statistics. Government statistics empower the economy, serve the health and welfare of citizens, improve governance, and inform decisions and policies in the public and private sectors, among many other vital functions. Government statistics are also fundamental to evidence-based policymaking, the engagement of which is on a rapid rise in local, state, and federal governments. To address the challenges posed by its decade-long economic recession and the devastation of back-to-back hurricanes, Puerto Rico must chart its path toward sustainable recovery using reputable and reliable data and statistical methods. Because of their broad and profound importance, it is imperative that government statistics be produced through rigorous scientific processes and analyses performed by experts that can function without improper outside influence. Government statistics must be independent, objective, accurate, and timely and be perceived as such. It is just as important to have adequate statistics on a variety of topics. PRIS has demonstrated repeatedly it has the expertise to function independently to produce rigorous, objective, and accurate statistics for the benefit of Puerto Rico and its people.

UNIVERSAL SERVICE FUND 2016·00059 ORDER On February 1, 2016, the Commission, on its own motion, initiated this administrative proceeding to investigate the current and future funding, distribution, and administration of the Kentucky Universal Service Fund ("KUSF") , which provides supplemental support for authorized telecommunications carriers that also participate in the federal Lifeline program. The Commission stated that the need for the investigation arose from the projected depletion of the KUSF by April 2016, at which time the fund will no longer be able to meet its monthly obligation, absent action to increase funding or reduce spending. The Commission named as parties the Attorney General's office; all Local Exchange Carriers; all commercial mobile radio service providers; and all eligible telecommunications carriers, and established a procedural schedule providing for the filing of testimony by parties, discovery, and an opportunity for a hearing. In initiating this investigation, the Commission's February 1, 2016 Order cited the need to maintain the solvency of the KUSF and proposed to either temporarily raise the KUSF per-line surcharge from $0.08 to $0.14 or to temporarily lower the amount of state support. Any comments addressing either proposal were required to be filed no later than February 22, 2016. The Commission received a total of nine joint and/or individual comments from the parties to the case, as well as three comments from members of the public. Four joint and/or individual comments 1 expressed support for the Commission's proposal to temporarily raise the per-line monthly surcharge from $0.08 to $0.14.

Sam Brownback decided to keep his promise to serve only two full terms, it set off a historic chain reaction of change and fueled concern that the Kansas delegation was about to lose its clout. Four of the state’s six seats in Congress just changed hands, as the average age of the state’s House delegation dropped from 56 to 42.
