DEVELOPMENT OF SUFISM IN BENGAL ABSTRACT Thesis Submitted for the degree of JBottor of $I)tlo£iopIi|> IN ISLAMIC STUDIES BY MUHAMMAD ISMAIL Under the supervision of Mr. AZOUDDIN KHAN READER DEPARTMENT OF ISLAMIC STUDIES ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 1989 1 The present work seeks to investigate the Development of Sufism in Bengal from the thirteenth to the twentieth century. Mo serious attempt has so far been Tiade to reconstruct the history of Sufism in i^-'ngal. The attention of the most of the scholars has centred- round the political history of Bengal,- making occasior. 1 references to its Saints but their accounts are uncritical and generally based upon the later hagiological material. In the present work an attempt has been made to make a fairly extensive and critical use of all sources available. Throughout the work we have attempted to justify by reasonable argument our reliance on a parti- cula'r source, wherever there has been a conflict of evidence or a contradiction. This aspect of the development of Sufism in Bengal is based on brief references found in the chronicles of Northern India and on the data collected from a study of inscriptions, coins and other archae^ogical evidence.. There is, however, sufficient materials in these chronicles as well as in the contemporary literature both Persian and Bengali available, with the help of which Develoo- nent of Sufisn in ^engal can be reconatructecl. In fact the Islaiaic proslelytization of India did not begin with coercion and blloashed; the first conversion were made by its Saints. Bengal's contact with the wiUslims, in the field of trade, colonization, and missionary work, began much earlier than its conquest in the thirteenth century. -

Bangladesh Studies O Level (7094) Pilot Textbook Topic 1 (a) Influence of major cultural figures Purpose of this chapter This chapter covers Topic 1 of the five History & Culture Topics in the syllabus for the Cambridge GCE Ordinary Level Bangladesh Studies (syllabus 7094, Paper 1). It introduces candidates to: the influence of major cultural figures (Topic 1a) a general background of key developments in Bengali language, literature, art, architecture, folk culture and other cultural practices that shape the culture of Bangladesh (Topic 1b). Teachers should note that the material provided here should form the basis of what is needed to answer the compulsory question in the examination. However, it is hoped that candidates will be able to draw on a wide variety of cultural experiences (by being exposed to poetry, song, dance, drama and local sites of historical interest) and on any other cultural figures to support their answers. Political History The subject of this thesis is the history of Bengal during the Sena rule. 'rhis includes not merely the political but also the administrative, the fiscal, the social, the religious and the literary history of the period. Arid although " it is the administrative, social, religious, and ethnological history which is of much greater importance and far transcends political history in point of human interest and edification,"1 a discussion of the political history to begin with is necessary for thorough understanding and lucid treatment of the whole subject. It is true that no Thucydides or Tacitus has left any record of the achievements of the people of ancient India, or any Kalha'Qa, a history of Bengal during the Sena rule. The latter is· therefore still a desideratum. But the researches of a multitude of scholars in this field have disclosed an un expected wealth of materials for the reconstruction of this history. These materials mainly fall into two classes, viz. (1) epigraphic records, (2) literi:l.ry wo~ks. Epigraphic records consist of inscriptions:~~J1tl-t)f alm-o~t all the rulers of this dynas~y.
