  • The Man Baseball Forgot Plays the Hand He's Dealt
The Library of America • Story of the Week From The Great American Sports Page: A Century of Classic Columns (Library of America, 2019), pages 307–15. Originally published in The Washington Post (May 9, 1983). Headnote by John Schulian. JANE LEAVY Jane Leavy (b. 1951) couldn’t settle on a career until her mother forced the issue. “I want to be a sportswriter,” Leavy blurted, surprising them both. After writing her master’s thesis on Red Smith, she found her way to The Washington Post in 1979 and had a distinguished nine-year run in which she survived anti-Semitic football coaches and athletes with advanced cases of arrested development. Leavy has since scored big in the book world with her comic novel Squeeze Play and her best-selling biography Sandy Koufax: A Lefty’s Legacy. Another of her bestsellers, The Last Boy, may have had its genesis in her unsentimental but com- passionate 1983 Post profile of Mickey Mantle in retirement. At the very least, interviewing him led to a career-changing discovery: Her gender could be more of a help than a hindrance. “I think there were some things,” she said, “that none of these guys would tell men.” HHH The Man Baseball Forgot Plays the Hand He’s Dealt TLANTIC CITY—Mickey Mantle has these recurring dreams. He’s A gliding down the runway with a vaulter’s pole in his hands. And it’s strange because he’s never pole-vaulted in his life. Stranger still, his knees don’t hurt and he’s running as fast as he can.

Frommer ISBN: 1-58261-767-8 Format: 8.5 x 11 hardcover Page Count: Photos: photos throughout Price: $24.95 Description: The Red Sox vs. the Yankees is perhaps the most intense rivalry in all of American sports, one that reached epic levels during the 2003 American League Championship Series, a seven-game masterpiece won by the New Yorkers on a walk-off homerun. It is also a rivalry that has endured for almost 100 years. Covering nearly a century’s worth of epic battles both on and off the baseball field between these age- old adversaries is Harvey and Frederic J. Frommer’s Red Sox vs. Yankees: The Great Rivalry. The book features exclusive interviews with former governors Mario Cuomo of New York and Michael Dukakis of Massachusetts, former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer, congressmen, reporters, broadcasters, and, most importantly, the many former and current players, coaches, managers, and front-office executives from the Red Sox and the Yankees who have helped keep the rivalry alive. These names include Don Zimmer, Theo Epstein, Nomar Garciaparra, Willie Randolph, Derek Lowe, Jason Giambi, Jeremy Giambi, Lou Merloni, Dwight Evans, Lou Piniella, Mike Torrez, Johnny Pesky, Phil Rizzuto, Ken “Hawk” Harrelson, Bob Watson, Ralph Houk, Eddie Yost, Dwight Evans, Chico Walker, Tony Cloninger, Casey Fossum, Steve Karsay, Grady Little, Mike Stanley, Jim Kaat, Jerry Remy, and Mel Parnell.

STAN GROSSFELD/GLOBE STAFF David Ortiz joins the Babe as threetime Red Sox World Series winners. By Bob Ryan GLOBE CORRESPONDENT NOVEMBER 03, 2013 Now that David Ortiz has become the most-decorated Red Sox player of the 21st century, and now that his transcendent World Series performance has enhanced his Hall of Fame résumé, a question arises: Where does Big Papi rank in the pantheon of all-time Red Sox greats? Here’s what I’m thinking: 25. Smoky Joe Wood, RHP (190815) A must, if only because of 1912, when he went 34-5 with a 1.91 ERA with 10 shutouts, before winning three games in the World Series. He was 117- 56 with the Sox, before his arm went dead and he reinvented himself as a Cleveland outfielder. I’ve always thought if I could be any 20th century athlete at any point in time it would be the 22-year-old Smoky Joe Wood in 1912. 24.
