The last couple of meetings INSIDE THIS ISSUE I have been approached by Women’s Clinic new members who expressed Games their appreciation for all the October Meeting information that the club has taught them and how much they Photography have enjoyed being a part of Page 2 our organization. At times over ______the last couple of years I have Fall Banquet thought whether we were doing Stuart with a nice Striper Page 3 enough for them, making them ______feel welcome and if they were learning. All whom I had talked to assured me that they were learning, and Park Cliff Cabins did feel a part of our organization. The difficult part of an organization such as Page 4 ours is trying to incorporate programs that involve all levels of understanding. ______We have to make them interesting to the advanced and intermediate fly fishers Roaring River Fishing but not overwhelming to those new to the sport. I am a firm believer that you Page 5 take away what you put into something, so if you really want to learn you will ______apply your self taking the time to read and investigate anything that you don’t understand. Our club is a great resource with a wealth of information, for Slough Creek Work Day someone in the club has probably done it or experienced it. We are a diverse Page 6 organization and you should not feel intimidated by anyone because we were ______all novices at one time, ask questions from others to gain information on types Winter Program of flies, locations, or techniques. You never stop learning in this sport and Page 7 you never will. ______One thing that I will do is to urge new members to give back to the club by Club News writing an article for the newsletter or run for a position on the board. Please Page 8 share your experiences thru an article or run for an officer position. You need only a desire to share your ideas and opinions. See you soon. Park Cliff Cabins (Roaring River) Dwan Welty

Roaring River State Park in Missouri has been a popular site for club members to visit and many have submitted articles for the newsletter. The articles talk about the water, the flies used and the fish that were caught and for fly that is all we care about. Club member Robert Bolin, his wife, Jeanetta, my wife, Linda and myself went to Roaring River the weekend of September 19 and had a wonderful experience partly due to the living accommodations. We had talked about tent camping (we tent camped last year) but this year we thought we would do something different

I did some research and found Roaring River had some options for accommodations that did not involve camping. You could stay in a Cassville hotel or motel which is about 6 miles from Roaring River. Another is Roaring River has a motel/convention center and also have cabins for rent or you go up Highway 112 about a quarter mile from the entrance of Roaring River and stay in Park Cliff Log Cabins. We decided to stay at the Park Cliff Log Cabins and even though I enjoy tent camping the cabins were very nice and enjoyable. If you want more information about Park Cliff Log Cabins

visit there website www.parkcliff.com or if you want a more personal touch talk with me. If you have not visited and fished Roaring River for reasons like do not have the camping equipment or an RV or your significant other would rather not camp there are other options. Flatland Fly Fish- 5

Now the fishing report. We stopped at Tim’s Fly Shop for some information and he said the water was high, murky and very fast so he suggested we use dark brown or cinnamon wooly buggers size 12 or 14 and have them bumping bottom so #4 split shot was added. This worked well Friday evening but not Saturday morning, I tried different flies but nothing worth mentioning so we stopped fishing and drove to Eureka Springs for shopping. Saturday evening I saw many ripples so I changed to a and a Sow bug dropper and for about an hour that was a very popular set-up then the horn sounded and the day was over. The Royal Coachman did get the attention of many trout and some would follow the fly as it drifted and at times it looked like the trout was pushing the fly. On Sunday morning weather and fishing was great but strikes few but two out of three is not bad. 6 Flatland Fly Fish-

Slough Creek Work Day Gary Tatro

Definition of a “normal” fly fisherman is a person who uses artificial flies for bait and uses a fly rod.

Definition of a “Flatland Fly Fisherman” is a person who gets up an hour before dawn on a thundering and rainy Saturday puts on his , leaves his fly rod in the case and goes to Slough Creek where he will spend the next 5 to 6 hours creating new pathways for the creek by digging out cattails, distributing 210 bags of “rip rap” and cutting trees and limbs that have fallen.

On Saturday, September 6, a number of Flatland Fly Fishermen proved the above definition was true and the only complaints we had were that Sunday morning came to quick.

Flatland Fly Fishers Club would like to thank Neil and Anthony Youngers along with Youngers and Sons Manufacturing for donating their time and equipment. We would also like to thank Bryan Lee and Quikrete for the donation of the “rip rap” bags used in our project. We were very fortunate to have the help and support of these fine people and businesses.

We are hoping that the changes that were made to Slough Creek will prove to be beneficial and the 2008-2009 trout season will be productive. Flatland Fly Fishers 7
