The Boston Red Sox Thursday, May 13, 2021 * The Boston Globe Red Sox offense sputters again vs. Oakland in matchup of division leaders, losing skid now three games Alex Speier For so much of the season’s first five weeks, the Red Sox offense seemed imbalanced but nearly slump- proof. While the team got next to nothing from the bottom of the order, the second through fifth spots in the lineup — occupied by Alex Verdugo, J.D. Martinez, Xander Bogaerts, and Rafael Devers — represented an often insurmountable obstacle for opposing pitchers. Yet as the Red Sox zoomed to the top of the standings, an unasked question loomed beneath the surface: What might happen if the Fearsome Foursome faltered? Now, the question has been asked — and the Sox have found the answer disconcerting. On Wednesday night, with the heart of the order failing to capitalize on tantalizing opportunities, the Red Sox continued their offensive skid in a 4-1 loss to the A’s at Fenway. The Sox have lost three straight, totaling four runs in those contests. The team’s Core Four is 7-for-41 with a .171/.244/.293 line and three extra-base hits during those contests, while the team as a whole is hitting .141/.198/.239 with 32 strikeouts in 101 plate appearances over the three-game rut. “Obviously we’re just going through a rough stretch right now,” Bogaerts said. “We’re in a slump right now as a team.” The Sox had an opportunity to escape their slide almost from the first pitch of the game against A’s rookie James Kaprielian, who appeared jittery at the outset of his first big league start.

The Boston Red Sox Tuesday, December 1, 2020 * The Boston Globe MLB Draft League launching wooden-bat league for top draft prospects Matthew Doherty Major League Baseball is launching a wooden-bat league for top prospects who are eligible for the MLB Draft, it announced Monday. The MLB Draft League, which will be operated by the scouting service Prep Baseball Report, has five member teams and is discussing adding a sixth team in the coming weeks. Teams will play a 68-game regular season from late May to mid-August, split into two parts. The first half of the season will showcase the draft-eligible high school, college, and junior college players. After an All-Star break centered around the MLB Draft (July 11-13), teams will restock their rosters with the top undrafted players for the second half of the season. Paul Toboni, the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Red Sox, said he’s unsure whether top prospects will choose to play in the MLB Draft League. The pandemic’s effect on the spring season will also play a factor, according to Toboni. “I think it’s too early to tell,” said Toboni. “It’s tough to predict the caliber of prospect that will choose to play in this league. And I’m stating the obvious here, but how the pandemic affects spring seasons will ultimately have an impact on prospects’ willingness to play as well.” The college baseball regular season ends in mid-May and the College World Series is scheduled from June 19 - June 30 this season.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES THURSDAY, MAY 31, 2018 HOUSTON'S DOMINANCE ON THE MOUND On Memorial Day against the New York Yankees, All-Star starting pitcher Justin Verlander delivered 6.2 innings of one-run ball to lead Houston to a 5-1 victory. Monday's team pitching performance was the 36th outing this season in which the Astros limited the oppositioin to two earned runs- or-fewer, and the 23rd contest that Houston surrendered one earned run- or-fewer. Playing in their 57th game of the season last night, this year's Astros Club is just the 10th team in Baseball to limit opposing Clubs to two earned runs-or-fewer in at least 35 of its team's fi rst 57 games, since 1930. The Club is the fi rst to accomplish the feat since the 1972 Baltimore Orioles, who were led by Hall of Famer Jim Palmer. As seen from the detailed chart below, the 2018 Astros logged the most strikeouts (363) of any Club, while also limiting the opposition to the fewest hits (192). Having limited opponents to one earned run-or-fewer in 23 contests thus far this season, this year's Astros Club is the 20th in the Majors since 1940, and the fi rst since the 1989 San Francisco Giants, to post at least 23 such games in its fi rst 57 contests. The 1968 Cleveland Indians hold the Major League record since 1940, logging 28 such outings. Entering play today, three Astros starting pitchers rank in the top-four in ERA among qualifed AL hurlers.

The Boston Red Sox Friday, June 15, 2018 * The Boston Globe David Price has been true to his word, and then some Peter Abraham SEATTLE — When David Price was medically cleared to rejoin the Red Sox rotation in mid-May after a two-day shutdown for wrist pain, he vowed to make every start the rest of the season. Left unsaid, and completely uncertain at the time, was how good Price would be. He had a 5.11 earned run average and was pitching with poor command and low 90s velocity. In the month since, Price has been one of the best pitchers in the majors. He was dominant again on Thursday night as the Sox beat the Seattle Mariners, 2-1. The Red Sox have won the first four games on their 10-game road trip and nine of 12 overall. At 48-22, they are 26 games over .500 for the first time this season. Seattle came into the series having won four straight and 11 of 13 to climb into first place in the American League West. But Price, Joe Kelly, and Craig Kimbrel held the Mariners to six hits before an enthusiastic crowd of 30,475 at Safeco Field. Kimbrel had to earn his 22nd save. He walked leadoff hitter Mitch Haniger and then threw a wild pitch before walking Nelson Cruz. Kimbrel then struck out an overmatched Kyle Seager before Ryon Healy bounced into a double play smartly turned by second baseman Eduardo Nunez. Price continued what has been an impressive run by allowing one run on five hit, all singles, over seven innings.
