    Marine Character Areas MCA 10 MENAI STRAIT Location and boundaries This Marine Character Area (MCA) covers the main channelled section of the Menai Strait, from Abermenai Point in the west to the fringes of Lavan Sands (Traeth Lafan) in the east. The MCA includes the full marine extent of local SCAs 4: Menai Strait and 17: Caernarfon. The boundaries of the above local SCAs were used to inform the outer extents of this MCA – concentrating on the Menai Strait’s main channel before it opens out into Conwy Bay to the east (MCA 3) and Caernarfon Bay to the west (MCA 11). www.naturalresourceswales.gov.uk MCA 10 Menai Strait - Page 1 of 9 Key Characteristics Key Characteristics The Menai Strait occupies a glacially-eroded bedrock trough which has subsequently flooded, separating mainland Wales from Anglesey. Very complex tidal patterns with changing conditions in the channel due to geological variation and sediment processes. It includes strong, swirling tidal currents and whirlpools as well as small rocky islets (including the famous Swellies). The Strait has been the scene of many shipwrecks owing to its challenging navigational conditions, including the Pwll Fanog and the HMS Conway. The tidal-swept bedrock is a mixture of mudstone, sandstone, limestone and slate. Boulders and coarse mobile sediments create a rich and unique marine environment. Entire strait designated as SAC, representing one of Wales’ jewels in terms of marine and coastal biodiversity. These include mudflats, intertidal rocky shores, rare rocky islands and sessile oak woodland. Two iconic bridges cross the Menai Strait, providing the first road and rail connections to the Welsh mainland, designed respectively by Thomas Telford and Robert Stephenson.

    Robert Stephenson FRS (16 October 1803 – 12 October 1859) Born in 1803 at Willington Quay, east of Newcastle Upon Tyne, the only son of George Stephenson and his wife, Fanny. At the time, George and Fanny were living in a single room and George was working as a brakesman on a stationary colliery engine. In 1804 the family moved to a cottage in West Moor when George was made brakesman at Killingworth Colliery. In 1805 Fanny gave birth to a daughter who died after a few weeks. The next year Robert’s mother died of consumption. George then went and worked in Scotland for a short time, leaving the infant Robert with a local woman. However, George soon returned to West Moor, and his sister Nelly came to live at the cottage to look after Robert. George had received virtually no formal education and he was determined that his son would have the education that he lacked. George was promoted in 1812 to be an enginewright. His wages were therefore much improved. Robert was sent to a primary school in Longbenton, near Killingworth until the age of eleven. He was then sent to Doctor Bruce’s Academy in Percy Street, Newcastle. This was a private institution and Robert would have been studying alongside the children of well-off families. Father and son studied together in the evenings, improving George’s understanding of science as well as Robert’s. They also built a sundial together, which they placed above the front door of their cottage. The cottage subsequently became known as Dial Cottage.

The first features in the history of industrialised iron construction, specifically period report- ing on the spectacular collapse of the River Dee bridge in Cheshire, England, in 1847. The second response highlights a blind spot in the historiography of modern architecture. Robert Stephenson became suspect when his cast- and wrought-iron railway bridge across the River Dee failed, resulting in death and injury and continuing uncertainty as to its cause. At the time the incident sparked national furore, setting off a coroner’s inquest followed by a Royal Commission into the perilous state of Britain’s bridges. The inquest jury concluded no one was to blame; rather, it was an accident brought about by use of iron, an uncertain and “treacherous” metal. This explanation has failed to satisfy contemporary materials specialists who have reopened the case, albeit under different terms of reference. The paper examines the initial verdict, firstly, in view of aspects of the social context of evidence and proof prevailing at the inquest and, secondly, given historical writing on iron construction whereby the inquest’s seemingly imprecise and arbitrary judgment is taken as sign of the subsequent progress of engi- neering as a practical and moral science.
