Talking Gender, Being Gendered: What Can We Learn from the Transgender Community? Tuesday, February 11 at 7:00 PM 111 Anderson Center

Participate in a candid conversation on Black Transgender Identity. This panel aims to create a dialogue about how blackness and trans-ness inform and shape one another. We will be joined by panelists Andrea Jenkins, CeCe McDonald, Jayden Miles, and Jay Masika.

His brutal death was the spark that ignited one of the most important social justice movements in the world, but Emmett Till remains a stranger to most . Why We Laugh: Black Comedians on Black Comedy is a no-holds-barred documentary that is both an insiders’ take and a critical examination of the cultural influence of Black comedy. Why We Laugh is a hilarious and spectacular archived film enriched by including interviews with prominent scholars, politicians, cultural critics and a host of notable comics , Katt Williams, , , , , Robin Harris, , D.L. Hughley, Redd Foxx, Dr. Cornell West, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Kweisi Mfume and more. Why We Laugh tracks the way black comedy has evolved from Steppin’ Fetchit and minstrels and blackface to the political humor of Dick Gregory, and from the success of and The Jeffersons to the big screen accomplishments of stars like and Whoopi Goldberg.

A Tribute to Black Cultural Icons Friday, February 28 at 7:00 PM Sundin Music Hall

Experience a night of musical, poetic, and theatrical performances honoring performers, artists, leaders and activists that make us proud to be black, including Angela Davis, Muhammad Ali, Luther Vandross, Queen Latifah, Audre , James Brown and others. Performers include Hamline students and local Twin Cities’ artists.
