  • Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’S Blown Away Tour
COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.

  • CHRIS KNIGHT Almost Daylight
CHRIS KNIGHT Almost Daylight “It’s hard to know how people are gonna react,” Chris Knight says of Almost Daylight, his ninth album and first new recording in over seven years. “I’ve written songs about a lot of different things going all the way back to my first record, and some folks still think ‘somebody kills somebody’ is all I write about. Maybe that’s why I was bound and determined to get these particular songs on this album. If people like them, then we’ll be fine. But I wasn’t gonna do it any other way.” For the past 20 years, Chris Knight has only made music his own way. He’s released eight acclaimed albums, played thousands of electrifying live shows and built generations of fervent fans from Texas honky-tonks to Manhattan rock clubs. He’s been hailed as “the last of a dying breed…a taciturn loner with an acoustic guitar and a college degree” (The New York Times) and “a storyteller in the best traditions of Mellencamp and Springsteen” (USA Today). Bottom line, he’s hard-earned his reputation as one of America’s most uncompromising and respected singer/songwriters. And now with Almost Daylight, Knight delivers the most powerful – and unexpected – music of his career. Almost Daylight is very much a Chris Knight album, familiarly featuring vivid pictures of rural characters, desperate men and hardscrabble survivors. At the same time it’s unlike anything Knight has done before, with formidable testaments to compassion, redemption and even straight-up love. It’s an album both tough and tender, as bare-knuckled as it is open-hearted.

  • Shania Twain: Sound and Style Groundbreaker
Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum • Words & Music • Grades 7-12 Shania Twain: Sound and Style Groundbreaker You can easily measure Shania Twain’s career by the numbers. With eighty-five million in album sales, she is country music’s best-selling female artist. But numbers don’t begin to express Twain’s importance. She achieved her success in the mid-1990s with groundbreaking force, using a distinctive voice, a glamorous style, and most of all, a catchy pop-country sound to draw millions of new fans into country music. Among her admirers are the latest generation of country artists, particularly women, who say she strongly influenced their careers. “She grew country music around the world,” Carrie Underwood says. “There was nobody else that looked or felt or sounded like her.” Born Eilleen Regina Edwards on August 28, 1965, in Windsor, John “Mutt” Lange, a producer who worked with rock bands. • Dolly Parton Interview
This interview with DOLLY PARTON was conducted by the Library of Congress on February 19, 2016. Dolly Parton LOC: As “Coat of Many Colors” was based upon a childhood experience, what inspired you in 1971 to finally put that story to music? DP: I can’t say I have a distinct memory of sitting down and saying, “Now’s the time to write a song about this experience.” Really none of my songs come from that intentional of a place. Ideas, melodies and certain lines sit with me until a moment comes and everything just starts to come together. Obviously this experience had a big impact on me so the painful part of the memory would come to the surface every now and again, then I would push it back down and then it would come around the bend once again. So each time I would be dialed into the memory, a line or the melody would come together. One day I was on the bus and the moment came where all of the lines to the song started to flow but I didn’t have anything to write down the words. So I looked up and there was a dry cleaner tag on one of Porters outfits so I just ripped it off and started to put pen to paper. I still have that dry cleaner receipt at my museum in Dollywood. What is really remarkable about the whole journey was the fact that I carried that hurt for so long but, once I wrote the song, I felt released from the hurt.
