ast week during the Democratic National Convention, Christine LLeinonen of Orlando victim Christopher “Drew” Leinonen spoke at the event. The short speech received a standing ovation from the crowd.

It takes about fi ve minutes for a church bell to ring 49 times. I know this because last month, my son Christopher, his boyfriend Juan and 47 others were murdered at a club in Orlando. Christopher was my only child. As I used to tell him, you can’t do better than perfect. He had so many friends, two of whom are here tonight representing hundreds and hundreds more. All his life, he brought people together. In high school, he won the Anne Frank Humanitarian Award for starting the gay straight alliance. Christopher’s paternal grandparents met and fell in love in a Japanese internment camp. So it was in his DNA that love always trumps hate. Christopher was a big Hillary supporter. That’s why I’m here, so I can tell you about the day he was born. At the time, I was a Michigan state trooper. When I went into labor, the hospital put my gun in an off duty safe. I didn’t argue. I know common sense gun policies save lives. The weapon that murdered my son fi res 30 rounds in one minute. An Orlando city commissioner pointed out the terrible math. One minute per gun to fi re so many shots, fi ve minutes per bell to honor so many lives. I’m glad common-sense gun policy was in place when Christopher was born, but where was that common sense the day he died? I never want you to ask that question about your child. That’s why I support Hillary Clinton.

Newsom spent much of the rest of his brief address hammering Mike Pence, the Republican nominee for vice president, calling him “the most anti-LGBT governor.” In Indiana, Pence signed into law a religious freedom law that created space for people to discriminate against the LGBT community. As a Congressman, he also proposed diverting Ryan White Act funding, intended for HIV/AIDS services, to institutions that seek to change a person’s sexual behavior. r. Donna’s Pet Foundation, a Tri-County 501(c)(3) non-profi t Dorganization, was recently launched in Broward County. It focuses on animal advocacy and the prevention of needless deaths of thousands of animals in our county shelters and city streets. Dr. Donna Watson, a well-known and respected Fort Lauderdale chiropractor in practice for over 21 years, founded the organization. “I’ve been an animal person my whole life,” said Watson, who’s personal experiences of adopting two rescue dogs from shelters opened her eyes to the problem of over population of dogs and cats here in South Florida, and the inadequate existing measures to reduce it. “When I realized what was happening and how many dogs and cats were being euthanized in our shelters and how our rescue partners who desperately try to keep up their intake and are unable to do so due to expenses and lack of fosters, I thought there has to be a better way,” Watson said. The problem, Watson said, is overpopulation of strays in the Tri-County area.
